Game Definitions: A Wittgensteinian Approach

Games have been defined and redefined many times over, and there seems to be no end to this continual process or any agreement about the definitions. This article argues that such an agreement is not necessary, and presents a Wittgensteinian approach to discussing game definitions. Instead of the common core approach used in most definitions, this article argues for an approach based on language-games. The common core approach is based on a limited number of shared core attributes, while the language-game approach is based on the idea of family resemblances. Integrative complexity (IC) refers to a psychological construct, a measurement, and an experience. As a construct IC refers to our less than conscious thinking style in the face of difference or disagreement, how we process information, make decisions, solve problems. The cross-culturally validated empirical measurement frame of IC has predictive values. ’Low IC’ indicates a simple thinking style that is rigid and closed, a ’tunnel vision’ way of thinking that cannot respect or recognize different dimensions or perspectives on a topic, predicting destructive conflict or violence. Alussa oli teko : ymmärtämisen käsitteestä perustuen Ludwig Wittgensteinin myöhäisfilosofiaan

Tarkastelen tutkielmassani ymmärtämisen käsitettä Ludwig Wittgensteinin myöhäisfilosofian pohjalta. Pyrin samalla sekä esittelemään että soveltamaan Wittgensteinin erityislaatuista filosofista menetelmää. Tulkintani mukaan Wittgenstein käsitti filosofian tehtäväksi sen osoittamisen, että filosofiset ongelmat perustuvat virheellisille oletuksille. Tämä osoitetaan tarkastelemalla ongelman kannalta relevanttien käsitteiden ”kielioppia” eli käyttösääntöjä, jotka määräävät niiden merkityksen. Filosofian tarkoitus ei siis ole esittää ratkaisuja filosofisiin ongelmiin vaan paljastaa niiden olevan mielettömiä osoittamalla, että jos ilmaisuja käytetään niiden kieliopin mukaisesti, filosofisia ongelm…
