Hepatic parasitosis in two wood mice, Apodemus sylvaticus (Rodentia: Muridae), due to Aonchotheca annulosa (Nematoda: Trichuridae), and Eucoleus baci…
2014
AbstractAonchotheca annulosa and Eucoleus bacillatus are two capillariin nematodes parasitizing the intestinal and stomach mucosa, respectively, of various rodent species, and two, among others, component species of the helminth fauna of the wood mouse, Apodemus sylvaticus. A capillariin each was found in the liver parenchyma of two wood mice in a post-fire regeneration enclave in Serra Calderona Natural Park (Valencian Community, Spain). Due to their location, the preliminary identification of the helminths corresponded to Calodium hepaticum, a hepatic capillariin with rodents as its main host. So far, this species had never been found in Serra Calderona. To verify the preliminary identifi…
A cost of Wolbachia-induced sex reversal and female-biased sex ratios: decrease in female fertility after sperm depletion in a terrestrial isopod.
2004
A number of parasites are vertically transmitted to new host generations via female eggs. In such cases, host reproduction is an intimate component of parasite fitness and no cost of the infection on host reproduction is expected to evolve. A number of these parasites distort host sex ratios towards females, thereby increasing either parasite fitness or the proportion of the host that transmit the parasite. In terrestrial isopods (woodlice), Wolbachia bacteria are responsible for sex reversion and female-biased sex ratios, changing genetic males into functional neo-females. Although sex ratio distortion is a powerful means for parasites to increase in frequency in host populations, it also …
Genetic colour variation visible for predators and conspecifics is concealed from humans in a polymorphic moth
2022
The definition of colour polymorphism is intuitive: genetic variants express discretely coloured phenotypes. This classification is, however, elusive as humans form subjective categories or ignore differences that cannot be seen by human eyes. We demonstrate an example of a 'cryptic morph' in a polymorphic wood tiger moth (Arctia plantaginis), a phenomenon that may be common among well-studied species. We used pedigree data from nearly 20,000 individuals to infer the inheritance of hindwing colouration. The evidence supports a single Mendelian locus with two alleles in males: WW and Wy produce the white and yy the yellow hindwing colour. The inheritance could not be resolved in females as t…

Re-Inscription of Female Images and Subjectivities in Margaret Atwood’s The Robber Bride
2012
In exploring the complex female identity models that are articulated in Margaret Atwood’s The Robber Bride, this essay foregrounds Atwood’s sensitiveness to one of the major feminist issues of the early nineties: the debate over whether it is/was possible to postulate a distinctive “female specialness”. The essay's specific contention is that, in outlining the complex experiences of three Canadian friends – Tony, Roz and Charis – and of their demonic antagonist, Zenia, across three decades (from the sixties to the early nineties), Atwood questions notions of biological reductionism and, more importantly, the feminist creed of universal sisterhood4.
"Le Train pour Hollywood de Radoslaw Piwowarski" (1987) ou comment devenir une star à l'image de Marilyn Monroe
2019
Our analysis focuses on the symbolism of Marilyn Monroe in the context of the Polish cinema of the end of communism and the desires and fantasies it arouses. Drawing on the Polish representation of Hollywood's star in the Polish film Train to Hollywood, directed by Radoslaw Piwowarski in 1987, we propose here a reflection on the femininity, but also the theatrical and subversive dimension of Eros.
Effect of nano zinc oxide as UV stabilizer on the weathering performance of wood-polyethylene composite
2016
Abstract In this study, the effect of using nano-sized zinc oxide (ZnO) particles on the enhancement if the degradation resistance of wood-high density polyethylene (HDPE) composite was investigated through artificial weathering. Samples with different amounts of ZnO mixing ratio (0, 1, 2, and 4 wt%) were manufactured using an internal mixer followed by compression molding. The prepared samples were then exposed to the artificial weathering process in a QUV weatherometer. The weathering behavior of samples was characterized using tensile strength, contact angle analysis, colorimetry, ATR-FTIR spectroscopy and FE-SEM. The results indicated that the amount of surfaces crack, tensile strength …
Hydrothermal liquefaction of wood using a modified multistage shrinking-core model
2020
Abstract Wood liquefaction in hot compressed water is modeled using the hydrolysis of Cellulose, Hemicellulose, and Lignin. These three components are reacted under catalyst-free subcritical conditions in a temperature range from 553 K to 640 K, and the heating rate ranges from 2 K/min to 6 K/min. Using a simplified reaction scheme, water-soluble products 1 (WSP), Biocrude, char, and gas are generated through intermediates with each wood component. A modified multistage shrinking core model is employed to simulate biomass particle degradation. The reaction and kinetic regime of the hydrothermal liquefaction 2 (HTL) process are treated separately for each wood component. Although the lack of…

Thermal Decomposition and Combustion of Microwave Pre-Treated Biomass Pellets
2021
The objective of the study was to investigate a more effective use of commercially available biomass pellets (wheat straw, wood, peat) using microwave pretreatment to improve heat production. Pellets were pretreated using the originally designed microwave torrefaction device. The effects of microwave (mw) pretreatment were quantified, providing measurements of the weight loss and elemental composition of pellets and estimating the effect of mw pretreatment on their porosity, surface area and calorific values at pretreatment temperatures of T = 448–553 K. Obtained results show that the highest structural variations and elemental composition during mw pretreatment were obtained for wheat stra…
