Higher doses of cabergoline further improve metabolic parameters in patients with prolactinoma regardless of the degree of reduction in prolactin lev…
2013
OBJECTIVE: Currently available studies that fully analyse the metabolic parameters in patients with prolactinoma are scarce and discordant. The aim of this study was to evaluate the metabolic effects of cabergoline (CAB) treatment in patients with newly diagnosed prolactinoma in relation to disease control and CAB dosage. DESIGN: This is a retrospective clinical-based therapy analysis. PATIENTS: Forty-three patients with prolactinoma (eight men, 35 women), aged 33·65 ± 11·23 years, were evaluated metabolically at baseline and after 12 months of CAB treatment. MEASUREMENTS: Body mass index (BMI), systolic and diastolic blood pressure, waist circumference (WC), lipid profile, haemoglobinA1c (…
A study of insulin resistance using the minimal model in nondiabetic familial combined hyperlipidemic patients.
1998
The presence of insulin resistance in 20 male nondiabetic patients with familial combined hyperlipidemia (FCH) and 20 controls of similar age and body mass index (BMI) was investigated using the minimal model method modified by the administration of insulin and an oral glucose tolerance test. The peripheral sensitivity of insulin, expressed as the insulin sensitivity index (Si), was 1.91 ± 1.05 and 2.86 ± 1.19 × 10−4 · min−1 · mU/L in FCH patients and controls, respectively (P < .01), and the corresponding value for the peripheral utilization of glucose independently of insulin (Sg) was 1.70 ± 1.13 in FCH patients and 2.35 ± 0.60 × 10−2 · min−1 in controls (P < .02). In the FCH group, the S…
Effects of marathon running on plasma total homocysteine concentrations.
2003
Summary Aims There is evidence of an excess of acute cardiovascular (CV) events in marathon runners. High plasma total homocysteine (tHcy) concentrations are a recognised risk factor for CV events. Therefore, we investigated the changes in plasma tHcy concentrations 24 h before and after a marathon race. Methods and results Twenty-two non-professional male athletes, mean age 35.6 (6.6), range 23–49 years, were studied the day before and 24 h after finishing a marathon race. None of the athletes was a carrier of the MTHFR 677TT genotype and no ingestion of supplements of vitamins (B12, B6, folic acid) was allowed. Results Changes in plasma folate and plasma vitamin B12 concentrations were no…
Visceral adiposity index is associated with histological findings and high viral load in patients with chronic hepatitis C due to genotype 1.
2010
Metabolic factors have been associated with liver damage in patients with genotype 1 chronic hepatitis C (G1 CHC). We tested visceral adiposity index (VAI), a new marker of adipose dysfunction in G1 CHC, patients to assess its association with host and viral factors and its link to both histological findings and sustained virological response (SVR). Two hundred thirtysix consecutive G1 CHC patients were evaluated by way of liver biopsy and anthropometric and metabolic measurements, including insulin resistance (IR), homeostasis model assessment (HOMA), and VAI using waist circumference, body mass index, triglycerides, and highdensity lipoprotein cholesterol. All biopsies were scored by one …
Hemostatic function in young subjects with central obesity: relationship with left ventricular function.
1995
This study was designed to evaluate coagulation and fibrinolysis activity and their relationship with left ventricular function in young obese subjects with central fat distribution. We assessed coagulation and fibrinolysis activity by evaluation of factor VII activity, fibrinogen and plasminogen, plasminogen activator inhibitor (PAI), and tissue plasminogen activator antigen basally (tPA1) and after venous occlusion (tPA2). These measures were evaluated in young (< 40 years) obese subjects with central fat distribution (n = 19) and in comparable lean subjects (n = 20). Blood glucose, triglycerides, total and high-density lipoprotein (HDL) cholesterol, apolipoprotein (apo) A1 and apo B, fas…
Associations of Maximal Strength and Muscular Endurance with Cardiovascular Risk Factors
2013
The aim was to study the associations of maximal strength and muscular endurance with single and clustered cardiovascular risk factors. Muscular endurance, maximal strength, cardiorespiratory fitness and waist circumference were measured in 686 young men (25±5 years). Cardiovascular risk factors (plasma glucose, serum high- and low-density lipoprotein cholesterol, triglycerides, blood pressure) were determined. The risk factors were transformed to z-scores and the mean of values formed clustered cardiovascular risk factor. Muscular endurance was inversely associated with triglycerides, s-LDL-cholesterol, glucose and blood pressure (β=-0.09 to - 0.23, p0.05), and positively with s-HDL choles…
Glycaemic variability and inflammation in subjects with metabolic syndrome.
2008
Subjects who develop diabetes have an increased cardiovascular risk even before the appearance of diabetes. The aim of this study was to investigate the glycaemic variability measured by continuous glucose monitoring (CGM CV%) in nondiabetic subjects with metabolic syndrome (MS) and to explore if glycaemic variability was associated with circulating levels of interleukin-6 (IL-6), a proinflammatory cytokine, or with an anti-inflammatory factor like adiponectin. Three groups of obese subjects with (MS+: 6m, 8f; BMI 33.1 ± 1.4 mean ± SEM) or without metabolic syndrome (MS−: 2m, 4f; BMI 29.2 ± 2.2) and with MS associated with type 2 diabetes (MS/T2D: 3m, 5f; BMI 32.9 ± 1.4) were investigated. …
The effect of growth hormone ( GH ) replacement on blood glucose homeostasis in adult nondiabetic patients with GH deficiency: real‐life data from th…
2015
SummaryObjective To assess the effect of 4 years’ growth hormone (GH) replacement on glucose homeostasis and evaluate factors affecting glycosylated haemoglobin (HbA1c) in adults with growth hormone deficiency (GHD). Design NordiNet® International Outcome Study, a noninterventional study, monitors long-term effectiveness and safety of GH replacement [Norditropin® (somatropin), Novo Nordisk A/S] in real-life clinical practice. Patients Nondiabetic patients (n = 245) with adult-onset GHD (age ≥20 years at GH start), ≥4 years’ GH replacement and HbA1c values at baseline and 4 years were included in the analysis. Measurements Changes from baseline (∆) to 4 years in HbA1c, fasting plasma glucose…
Emergence of ovulatory cycles with aging in women with polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) alters the trajectory of cardiovascular and metabolic risk fa…
2013
Abstract STUDY QUESTION: What alters cardiovascular and metabolic risk factors with aging in women with polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS)? SUMMARY ANSWER: Lipid parameters, mainly low-density lipoprotein (LDL) cholesterol, increase with aging, but not in women who attain ovulatory cycles. WHAT IS KNOWN ALREADY: Cardiovascular and metabolic parameters tend to increase with aging, but this has not been shown in a prospective longitudinal study in women with PCOS. Correlates of these changes have not been identified. STUDY DESIGN: A prospective cohort of 118 hyperandrogenic women with PCOS who were followed from the age of 20-25 years at 5 year intervals for 20 years. PARTICIPANTS/MATERIALS, SE…
Clinical applicability and cost-effectiveness of DIABSCORE in screening for type 2 diabetes in primary care
2017
Aims: To evaluate the applicability and cost-effectiveness of a clinical risk score (DIABSCORE) to screen for type 2 diabetes in primary care patients. Methods: Multicenter cross-sectional study of 10,508 adult no previously diagnosed with diabetes, in 2 Spanish regions (Canary Islands and Valencian Community). The variables comprising DIABSCORE were age, waist to height ratio, family history of diabetes and gestational diabetes. ROC curves were obtained; the diabetes prevalences odds ratios (HbA1c >= 6.5%) between patients exposed and not exposed to DIABSCORE >= 100, and to fasting blood glucose >= 126 mg/dL were calculated. The opinions of both the professionals and the patients concernin…
