A case of Waldenstroem's disease with a monoclonal IgM antiphospholipid antibody
2002
The antiphospholipid syndrome (APS) was described in 1983 as a clinical entity characterized by venous and arterial thrombosis, thrombocytopenia, and recurrent fetal loss. The serological markers of APS are antiphospholipid antibodies (APLA) directed mainly against anionic phospholipids, usually cardiolipin but also phosphatidylserine. Some APLA exhibit lupus anticoagulant activity. Monoclonal gammopathy sometimes occurs with the presence of autoantibodies. In this paper, we describe a patient with the diagnosis of immunocytoma with an IgM, kappa paraprotein with apparent specificity against anionic phospholipids, and lupus anticoagulant activity, but no clinical signs of APS. We describe i…
Clinical disorders responsible for plasma hyperviscosity and skin complications
2017
In this brief review, we have examined some clinical disorders which are associated to an altered hemorheological profile and at times accompanied by skin ulcers. This skin condition may be, in fact, observed in patients with primary plasma hyperviscosity such as multiple myeloma, Waldenstrom macroglobulinemia, cryoglobulinemia, cryofibrinogenemia, dysfibrinogenemia and connective tissue diseases. It must be underlined that the altered hemorheological pattern is not the only responsible for this skin complication but, as it worsens the microcirculatory flow, it contributes to determine the occurrence of the skin ulcers.

Amorphous silica modeled with truncated and screened Coulomb interactions: A molecular dynamics simulation study
2007
We show that finite-range alternatives to the standard long-range BKS pair potential for silica might be used in molecular dynamics simulations. We study two such models that can be efficiently simulated since no Ewald summation is required. We first consider the Wolf method, where the Coulomb interactions are truncated at a cutoff distance r_c such that the requirement of charge neutrality holds. Various static and dynamic quantities are computed and compared to results from simulations using Ewald summations. We find very good agreement for r_c ~ 10 Angstroms. For lower values of r_c, the long--range structure is affected which is accompanied by a slight acceleration of dynamic properties…
Quantifying Artifacts in Ewald Simulations of Inhomogeneous Systems with a Net Charge
2014
Ewald summation, which has become the de facto standard for computing electrostatic interactions in biomolecular simulations, formally requires that the simulation box is neutral. For non-neutral systems the Ewald algorithm implicitly introduces a uniform background charge distribution that e ectively neutralizes the simulation box. Because a uniform distribution of counter charges typically deviates from the spatial distribution of counterions in real systems, artifacts may arise, in particular in systems with an inhomogeneous dielectric constant. Here we derive an analytical expression for the e ect of using an implicit background charge instead of explicit counterions, on the chemical po…

Frühling ohne Opfer. Laurent Chétouanes Sacré Sacre du printemps
2018
This paper presents a phenomenological in-depth analysis of Laurent Chétouane's choreography of Stravinsky's Rite of Spring. It focuses on the questions of sacrifice, community and relation.
A note on adjusted responses, fitted values and residuals in Generalized Linear Models
2014
Adjusted responses, adjusted fitted values and adjusted residuals are known to play in Generalized Linear Models the role played in Linear Models by observations, fitted values and ordinary residuals. We think this parallelism, which was widely recognized and used in the early literature on Generalized Linear Models, has been somewhat overlooked in more recent presentations. We revise this parallelism, systematizing and proving some results that are either scattered or not satisfactorily spelled out in the literature. In particular, we formally derive the asymptotic dispersion matrix of the (scaled) adjusted residuals, by proving that in Generalized Linear Models the fitted values are asym…
