Terrain representation is a basic topic in the field of interactive graphics. The amount of data required for a good quality of the terrain offers an important challenge to developers of such systems. For users of these applications, the accuracy of geographical data is generally less important than its natural visual appearance. This makes it possible to maintain a limited geographical database for the system and to extend it generating synthetic data. Acoustic spectral hole-burning in a two-level system ensemble

AbstractMicroscopic two-level system (TLS) defects at dielectric surfaces and interfaces are among the dominant sources of loss in superconducting quantum circuits, and their properties have been extensively probed using superconducting resonators and qubits. We report on spectroscopy of TLSs coupling to the strain field in a surface acoustic wave (SAW) resonator. The narrow free spectral range of the resonator allows for two-tone spectroscopy where a strong pump is applied at one resonance, while a weak signal is used to probe a different mode. An Ergodic Sum-of-Cisoids Simulator for Multiple Uncorrelated Rayleigh Fading Channels Under Generalized Scattering Conditions

In this paper, we present a new method for the design of ergodic sum-of-sinusoids (SOS) simulators for multiple uncorrelated narrowband Rayleigh fading channels. The method, which is intended for a special class of SOS models known as sum-of-cisoids (SOC) models, enables the generation of an unlimited number of mutually uncorrelated Rayleigh fading waveforms with specified autocorrelation properties. Performance of power control in inter-cell interference coordination for frequency reuse

To mitigate inter-cell interference in 3G evolution systems, a novel inter-cell interference coordination scheme called soft fractional frequency reuse is proposed in this article, which enables to improve the data rate in cell-edge. On this basis, an inter-cell power control is presented for the inter-cell interference coordination, and the inter-cell balanced signal to interference plus noise ratio (SINR) among users is established for power allocation, which enables mitigation of inter-cell interference. A low power and high resolution data logger for submarine seismic monitoring

The design, implementation and characterization of a digital waveform recorder for ocean bottom seismic monitoring is here reported. The system is capable of synchronously acquiring, and logging on a flash memory bank, four high resolution signals. Thanks to a very careful design of the system architecture and by using robust digital signal processing techniques, two main conflicting issues have been addressed: a high dynamic range, better than 120 dB, usually obtained with high energy demanding converters, and a power consumption as low as 250 mW, hence allowing to easily increase the time of a continuous submarine monitoring session up to 3 months.

Efficient analysis of cubic junction of rectangular waveguides using admittance-matrix representation

In the paper an efficient and accurate method, based on the multimode-admittance-matrix representation and the theory of cavities, is proposed for the analysis of a six-port ‘cubic’ junction composed of the orthogonal intersection of three rectangular waveguides. Very simple closed-form analytical expressions are explicitly detailed for all matrix elements of this basic key building block. More general waveguide multiport junctions, composed of a central cubic junction with arbitrarily shaped waveguide access ports, are also studied using a segmentation procedure. Angle and Height Estimation Technique for Aerial Vehicles using mmWave FMCW Radar

In this article, we present a novel angle and height estimation technique for aerial vehicles using mmWave frequency modulated continuous wave (FMCW) Radar. In the proposed method, Radar’s antennas are oriented vertically to measure the elevation angle of arrival of the aerial vehicle from ground station. Height of the aerial vehicle and horizontal distance of the aerial vehicle from Radar station on ground are estimated using the measured radial range and the elevation angle of arrival.

In particular, a downlink scenario is considered, in which control messages are sent to UAVs via cellular base stations (BSs). Large-scale random features for kernel regression

Kernel methods constitute a family of powerful machine learning algorithms, which have found wide use in remote sensing and geosciences. However, kernel methods are still not widely adopted because of the high computational cost when dealing with large scale problems, such as the inversion of radiative transfer models. This paper introduces the method of random kitchen sinks (RKS) for fast statistical retrieval of bio-geo-physical parameters. The RKS method allows to approximate a kernel matrix with a set of random bases sampled from the Fourier domain. We extend their use to other bases, such as wavelets, stumps, and Walsh expansions.
