Tunable optical lattices in the near-field of a few-mode nanophotonic waveguide

2019

Due to the action of the scattering force, particles that are optically trapped at the surface of a waveguide are propelled in the direction of the light propagation. In this work, we demonstrate an original approach for creating tunable periodic arrays of optical traps along a few-mode silicon nanophotonic waveguide. We show how the near-field optical forces at the surface of the waveguide are periodically modulated when two guided modes with different propagation constants are simultaneously excited. The phenomenon is used to achieve stable trapping of a large number of dielectric particles or bacteria along a single waveguide. By controlling the light coupling conditions and the laser wa…

Plasmonics co-integrated with silicon nitride photonics for high-sensitivity interferometric biosensing

2019

We demonstrate a photonic integrated Mach-Zehnder interferometric sensor, utilizing a plasmonic stripe waveguide in the sensing branch and a photonic variable optical attenuator and a phase shifter in the reference arm to optimize the interferometer operation. The plasmonic sensor is used to detect changes in the refractive index of the surrounding medium exploiting the accumulated phase change of the propagating Surface-Plasmon-Polariton (SPP) mode that is fully exposed in an aqueous buffer solution. The variable optical attenuation stage is incorporated in the reference Si3N4 branch, as the means to counter-balance the optical losses introduced by the plasmonic branch and optimize interfe…

Design of compensated multiport waveguide junctions considering mechanization effects

2015

Abstract A new tool for the rigorous and efficient design of compensated multiport waveguide junctions, considering the mechanization effects due to low-cost manufacture techniques, is presented. Several new designs for a great variety of key components, present in modern microwave and millimetre-wave equipment, are proposed taking into account the introduction of rounded corners in the rectangular waveguide access ports. The new implemented tool permits to control and compensate for the potential degradation of the wide-band performance of such components prior to their fabrication, thus achieving an optimal design. All the presented results have been successfully validated by comparing th…

Accurate determination of the complex permittivity of materials with transmission reflection measurements in partially filled rectangular waveguides

2003

An enhanced transmission reflection technique for the precise determination of the complex permittivity of dielectric materials partially filling the cross section of a rectangular waveguide is described. Dielectric properties are determined by an iterative procedure from two-port S-parameter measurements and a numerically generated propagation constant obtained from the analysis of a partially filled waveguide. Convergence of the solution is ensured from perturbational approximations. Unlike previous approaches, an uncertainty investigation is performed, taking into account all the parameters involved in the dielectric characterization. Permittivity accuracy values are presented and, hence…

Permittivity Measurements of Lossy Liquids at Millimeter-Wave Frequencies

1983

A measurement system is described which allows the determination of the complex permittivity of high-loss liquids at millimeter waves. Basically, the setup consists of a waveguide interferometer whose unknown arm embodies a liquid holder irradiated by an open-ended rectangular waveguide. The sample thickness is varied by means of a piston driven by a micrometer screw. The bridge output then is read as a function of the liquid thickness. Best fitting between experimental and computed data through a suitable model of the system enables the permittivity to be determined. The system can operate, with high sensitivity, over the whole frequency range of the dominant mode propagating in the wavegu…

Polymer Halide Perovskites-Waveguides Integrated in Nanocellulose as a Wearable Amplifier-Photodetector System

2018

Semiconductor organometallic halide (CH 3 NH 3 PbX 3 , X=Cl, Br, I) perovskites (MHP) have emerged as a very high promising material for optoelectronics. Their large absorption coefficients, high electronic mobilities, excellent quantum yield of emission at room temperature and tunable band-gap with the composition resulted in a new generation of photovoltaics and electronic devices. In this work, HPVK materials are successfully incorporated on a nanocellulose (NC) substrate with the intention to exploit the interesting properties of HPVK materials to construct wearable devices. In particular, a bilayer Poly(methyl methacrylate) /HPVK deposited on NC resulted in a suitable waveguide to demo…

Multi-line NIR-RGB emission in Nd:LiNbO3 RPE optical waveguides

2007

Simultaneous generation of four spectral emission lines has been achieved in Nd-doped lithium niobate reverse proton exchange optical waveguide cavities. Using a pump at 800 nm, the four lines were found and they are due to lasing at 1.3735 combined with parametric conversion at 0.687, 0.574 and 0.4 mum.

Efficient excitation of photoluminescence in a two-dimensional waveguide consisting of a quantum dot-polymer sandwich-type structure

2014

International audience; In this Letter, we study a new kind of organic polymer waveguide numerically and experimentally by combining an ultrathin (10–50 nm) layer of compactly packed CdSe/ZnS core/shell colloidal quantum dots (QDs) sandwiched between two cladding poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) layers. When a pumping laser beam is coupled into the waveguide edge, light is mostly confined around the QD layer, improving the efficiency of excitation. Moreover, the absence of losses in the claddings allows the propagation of the pumping laser beam along the entire waveguide length; hence, a high-intensity photoluminescence (PL) is produced. Furthermore, a novel fabrication technology is develo…

Color Tuning and White Light by Dispersing CdSe, CdTe, and CdS in PMMA Nanocomposite Waveguides

2013

In this paper, active nanocomposite waveguides based on the dispersion of CdS, CdTe, and CdSe colloidal quantum dots (QDs) in PMMA are proposed. Their propagation properties are studied as a function of the concentration of nanoparticles in the polymer using the variable length stripe method. When the three nanostructures are dispersed in the same film, the structure is able to waveguide the three basic colors: red (CdSe), green (CdTe), and blue (CdS), it being possible to engineer any waveguided color by an appropriate choice of the filling factor of each QD in the PMMA matrix. For this purpose, it is important to take into account reabsorption effects and the Förster energy transfe…
