HYPERFINE STRUCTURE CONSTANTS OF ENERGETICALLY HIGH-LYING LEVELS OF ODD PARITY OF ATOMIC VANADIUM

2014

High-resolution Fourier transform spectra of a vanadium-argon plasma have been recorded in the wavelength range of 365-670 nm (15,000-27,400 cm–1). Optical bandpass filters were used in the experimental setup to enhance the sensitivity of the Fourier transform spectrometer. In total, 138 atomic vanadium spectral lines showing resolved or partially resolved hyperfine structure have been analyzed to determine the magnetic dipole hyperfine structure constants A of the involved energy levels. One of the investigated lines has not been previously classified. As a result, the magnetic dipole hyperfine structure constants A for 90 energy levels are presented: 35 of them belong to the configuration…

The ratio of primary scattering to total scattering of sky radiance

1974

Recently Eschelbach has computed from theory spectral radiance values for a turbid atmosphere taking into account the effect of multiple scattering. In the present work these computational data were used to investigate the ratio of primary to total scattering. This quotient is a measure of multiple scattering because of the relation: Total Scattering (TS) is equal to Primary Scattering (PS) plus Multiple Scattering (MS), i.e. PS/TS = 100 - MS/TS (%). It is discussed in which way multiple scattering in the solar almucantar depends on the solar elevation, turbidity, scattering angle, wavelength and albedo. The present work shows in which way multiple scattering is related to the optical thick…

Ground-state magneto-optical resonances in cesium vapor confined in an extremely thin cell

2007

Experimental and theoretical studies are presented related to the ground-state magneto-optical resonance prepared in Cesium vapour confined in an Extremely Thin Cell (ETC, with thickness equal to the wavelength of the irradiating light). It is shown that the utilization of the ETC allows one to examine the formation of a magneto-optical resonance on the individual hyperfine transitions, thus distinguishing processes resulting in dark (reduced absorption) or bright (enhanced absorption) resonance formation. We report on an experimental evidence of the bright magneto-optical resonance sign reversal in Cs atoms confined in the ETC. A theoretical model is proposed based on the optical Bloch equ…

A Decade in the Life of EXO 2030+375: A Multiwavelength Study of an Accreting X‐Ray Pulsar

2002

Using BATSE and RXTE observations from 1991 April to 2001 August we have detected 71 outbursts from 82 periastron passages of EXO 2030+375, a 42-second transient X-ray pulsar with a Be star companion, including several outbursts from 1993 August to 1996 April when the source was previously believed to be quiescent. Combining BATSE, RXTE, and EXOSAT data we have derived an improved orbital solution. Applying this solution results in a smooth profile for the spin-up rate during the giant outburst and results in evidence for a correlation between the spin-up rate and observed flux in the brighter BATSE outbursts. Infrared and Halpha measurements show a decline in the density of the circumstell…

Manakov Polarization Modulation Instability in Normal Dispersion Optical Fiber

2014

We observed polarization modulation instability in the normal dispersion regime of randomly birefringent multi-km telecom optical fiber. The instability is pumped by two wavelength multiplexed and orthogonally polarized intense continuous lasers.

Uniaxial epsilon-near-zero metamaterials: from superlensing to double refraction

2014

We investigated optical properties of nanostructured metal-dielectric multilayered lattices under the conditions of epsilon-near-zero (ENZ), a concept derived from the effective-medium approach (EMA). We theoretically found that the periodic array of metallic nanolayers may exhibit either superlensing driven by broadband canalization from point emitters or single-polarization double refraction, and conventional positive as well as negative, even at subwavelength regimes. For the latter case, we formulated a modified EMA, and subsequently a generalized refraction law, that describes both refractive behaviors concurrently. The modal coupling of plasmonic lattice resonances, and nonlocality in…

Wavelength dependence of visual acuity in goldfish.

2003

Visual acuity was measured in a two-choice training experiment with food reward. Four goldfish were trained to select a homogeneously illuminated testfield when a high-contrast grating (transparency) was shown for comparison at the second testfield. Measurements were performed for white and monochromatic testfield illuminations in the light adapted state. Fourteen wavelengths between 404 nm and 683 nm were tested. For each wavelength (and white light) the testfield intensity was determined for which spatial resolution was highest. Between 446 nm and 683 nm maximal values of 2.0 cycles/deg (corresponding to a visual acuity of 15' of arc) were found. At 404 nm and in the ultraviolet resolutio…

Thermal rippling behavior of graphane

2012

Thermal fluctuations of single layer hydrogenated graphene (graphane) are investigated using large scale atomistic simulations. By analyzing the mean square value of the height fluctuations $$ and the height-height correlation function $H(q)$ for different system sizes and temperatures we show that hydrogenated graphene is an un-rippled system in contrast to graphene. The height fluctuations are bounded, which is confirmed by a $ H(q) $ tending to a constant in the long wavelength limit instead of showing the characteristic scaling law $ q^{4-\eta} (\eta \simeq 0.85)$ predicted by membrane theory. This unexpected behaviour persists up to temperatures of at least 900 K and is a consequence o…

Edge pinch instability of liquid metal sheet in a transverse high-frequency AC magnetic field

2006

We analyze the linear stability of the edge of a thin liquid metal layer subject to a transverse high-frequency AC magnetic field. The layer is treated as a perfectly conducting liquid sheet that allows us to solve the problem analytically for both a semi-infinite geometry with a straight edge and a thin disk of finite radius. It is shown that the long-wave perturbations of a straight edge are monotonically unstable when the wave number exceeds some critical value $k_c,$ which is determined by the surface tension and the linear density of the electromagnetic force acting on the edge. The higher the density of electromagnetic force, the shorter the critical wavelength. The perturbations with…

Propagation and localisation of vibrational modes in 3–dimensional disordered systems: the binary force constant model

1999

We consider a system of coupled harmonic oscillators on a cubic lattice. The force constants are supposed to take two distinct values at random according to a bond concentration x. The density of states (DOS) is evaluated both by numerical diagonalisation and in coherent-potential approximation (CPA). There is excellent agreement between the results of the two methods. Near the concentration, where the bonds with the larger force constants percolate, the DOS differs appreciably from the crystalline one and is anomalously enhanced at low frequencies as compared to Debye's ω2 law (“boson peak”). These features are shared with models with continuous distributions of force constants. The mean f…
