Ultrathin high-index metasurfaces for shaping focused beams

2015

The volume size of a converging wave, which plays a relevant role in image resolution, is governed by the wavelength of the radiation and the numerical aperture (NA) of the wavefront. We designed an ultrathin (λ/8 width) curved metasurface that is able to transform a focused field into a high-NA optical architecture, thus boosting the transverse and (mainly) on-axis resolution. The elements of the metasurface are metal-insulator subwavelength gratings exhibiting extreme anisotropy with ultrahigh index of refraction for TM polarization. Our results can be applied to nanolithography and optical microscopy. Spanish Ministry of Economy and Competitiveness (MEC) (TEC2013-50416-EXP).

Dynamic wavefront sensing and correction with low-cost twisted nematic spatial light modulators

Off-the-shelf spatial light modulators (SLMs), like twisted nematic liquid crystal displays (TNLCDs) used in projection systems, show some interesting features such as high spatial resolution, easy handling, wide availability, and low cost. We describe a compact adaptive optical system using just one TNLCD to measure and compensate optical aberrations. The current system operates at a frame rate of the order of 10 Hz with a four-level codification scheme. Wavefront estimation is performed through conventional Hartmann–Shack sensing architecture. Development of Slewing Mirror Telescope Optical System for the UFFO-pathfinder

The Slewing Mirror Telescope (SMT) is the UV/optical telescope of UFFO-pathfinder. The SMT optical system is a Ritchey-Chretien (RC) telescope of 100 mm diameter pointed by means of a gimbal-mounted flat mirror in front of the telescope. The RC telescope has a 17 × 17arcmin2 in Field of View and 4.3 arcsec resolution (full width half maximum of the point spread function) The beam-steering mirror enables the SMT to access a 35 × 35degree region and point and settle within 1 sec. Cylindrical metal-coated optical fibre devices for filters and sensors

Novel fibre-optic components suitable for sensor applications and wavelength filters are reported. The devices consist of a tapered fibre whose uniform waist has been coated with a thin layer of gold. The operation principle is the resonant excitation of a surface plasma mode of the metal film.

Photoinduced Modifications of the Structure and Microhardness of Fullerite C60

The wavelength dependence, temperature limits, time and depth evolution of the photoinduced hardening of C60 crystals in air have been investigated by microindentation and dislocation mobility methods. Two photopolymerized phases, which differ in the hardness and thermal stability, are found to appear. We suggest that formation of fullerene dimers (ie. C120) in pristine fullerite and growth of C120O phase in oxygenated fullerite via [2+2] photoaddition reaction is responsible for it. It has been found from depth distribution data of the hardness that the C120O phase is located in oxygen-contaminated subsurface layer of 0.8–1 μm and appears under illumination at 290–330 K.

These techniques are based on different physical phenomena, for instance transitions between spin states of nuclei and electrons, energetic transitions of valence electrons, intra-molecular vibrations, or vibrations of atoms and molecular units in the lattice. A wide emission band in the region of 425 nm is observed in all the examined crystals at photo and ionising irradiation. Maximum of the complex luminescence band is observed at 410 nm at 350 K and at 450 nm at 85 K. The shift of the peak of the band envelope towards shorter wavelengths as the temperature increases is related to thermal dependence of the intensity of elementary components of the luminescence band. Hyperspectral imager calibration using ceramic color tiles (Conference Presentation)

Sets of chromatic and neutral ceramic tiles are widely used as measurement standards for reflectance factors in color applications. The usual instrument for color measurements is a spectrophotometer that measures the tiles using either a 0:45 or 45:0 illumination and viewing geometry, or with an integrating sphere in order to measure the reflectance factor in either specular excluded or specular included conditions. Having the corresponding measurements of the tile set from a calibrated instrument, systematic errors in the instrument under study can be diagnosed and corrected using a model of the errors and fitting it to the difference in measurements.
