Macromolecules in ordered media. II. A fluorescence study of the polymer-liposome association

1995

The interactions of poly (4-vinyl pyridine) with dimyristoylphosphatidic acid-based liposomes were studied in heterogeneous solution systems. The polymer was dispersed in aqueous buffer solutions of small unilamellar vesicles and after a suitable period of incubation to raise the equilibrium, the experiments has been conducted as a function of polymer concentration and temperature. According to the measurements of the steady-state fluorescence spectra, changes in the intensities as well as shifts in the emission peak wavelength, has served as raw data to accounting for the polymer-vesicle interactions. Quantitative evaluation of the interaction has been done using a simple associating model…

Rapid evaluation of oxidised fatty acid concentration in virgin olive oil using Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy and multiple linear regression

2011

Abstract Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), followed by multivariate treatment of spectral data, was used to evaluate the oxidised fatty acid (OFA) concentration in virgin olive oil samples characterised by different oxidative status. The entire FTIR spectra (4000–700 cm−1) of oils were divided in 25 wavelength regions. The normalised absorbances of the peak areas within these regions were used as predictors. In order to predict the OFA concentration, multiple linear regression (MLR) models were performed. After a cube root transformation of data, an MLR model constructed using eight predictors was able to predict OFA concentration with an average error of 17%. The main wavelen…

Polarization holographic recording in Disperse Red1 doped polyurethane polymer film

2011

In this report holographic recording of polarisation and surface relief gratings in Disperse Red 1 (DR1) doped polyurethane polymer films was studied. In this material DR1 is chemically bounded to polyurethane polymer main chain. Polarization holographic recording was performed by two orthogonal circularly polarized 532 nm laser beams. Photoinduced birefringence is a precondition for polarization holograms recording, therefore a detailed study of a photoinduced birefringence and changes of optical properties was performed. The lasers with wavelengths of 375nm, 448nm, 532 nm and 632.8 nm were used as pumping beam for sample excitation. The photoinduced birefringence Δn was measured at 532 nm…

Hybrid silicon on insulator/polymer electro-optical intensity modulator operating at 780  nm

2014

Currently inorganic materials prevail as the nonlinear active medium for light modulation in electro-optical (EO) device technology. A recent promising trend is to consider organic nonlinear optical materials for application in EO modulators due to their multiple advantages including low costs and high EO coefficients. In this paper, we proposed a new type of polymer EO modulator whose fabrication is compatible with the currently used silicon on insulator technology. Our numerical optimization of the proposed structure demonstrates that it is theoretically possible to achieve a half-wave voltage as low as 1.56 V for a 1 cm long modulator structure operating at 780 nm. Based on the results o…

Inside Front Cover: Redox-Tunable Defects in Colloidal Photonic Crystals (Adv. Mater. 20/2005)

2005

The inside front cover illustrates reversible tuning of an intragap transmitting state induced by redox cycling, accomplished using a redox-active polyferrocenylsilane polyelectrolyte multilayer planar defect embedded in a colloidal photonic crystal (CPC) synthesized by a bottom–up method combining colloidal self-assembly and microcontact printing. In work reported on p. 2455 by Manners, Ozin, and co-workers, the wavelength position of the defect state can be changed by changing the oxidation state of the ferrocene moieties in the polymer backbone. This could find applications in electrochemically tunable microcavities, and—if light emitters are incorporated—electrochemically tunable CPC-ba…

<title>Effect of light exposure on dislocation mobility in fullerite C60 crystals</title>

2001

The illumination-time evolution and the wavelength dependence of the photoinduced changes in dislocation mobility on the (111) face of C60 single crystals in air for the wavelength range 150 - 900 nm and power densities 0.2 - 2 mW/cm2 has been investigated. The results show that the light exposure in air leads to the decrease of the dislocation mobility. The magnitude of the effect as a function of the illumination time was investigated and a two-stage relationship was obtained. The ultraviolet light was found to be more effective than the visible light in the photoinduced reduction of dislocation mobility and solubility. In the wavelength range of 150 - 700 nm, the reduction of dislocation…

Economical device for measuring thickness of a thin polymer film

1994

An inexpensive device (about $2K) for thickness measurements of thin (<1 μm) polymer films has been constructed. The homogeneous film is placed on a bulk substrate and three semiconductor lasers of different wavelengths are used to measure the reflectances at normal incidence. The thickness can be deduced with typically 4–8 nm uncertainty.

Eye Cataract Simulation Using Polymer Dispersed Liquid Crystal Scattering Obstacles

2004

Polymer dispersed liquid crystals with electrically induced variations of light scattering extent similar to that of transparent PLZT ceramics are used for simulation of different development stages of eye cataract. Wavelength dependencies of scattering are determined in the visible spectral range, and human visual response looking through the scattering obstacle to the onset of various spatial frequency stimuli is determined psychophysically and electrophysiologically in order to find correlation between the scattering extent, visual acuity and visual evoked potential VEP chromatic characteristics.

Absolute Configuration Determination of 2,3-Dihydro-1H,5H-pyrazolo[1,2-a]pyrazoles Using Chiroptical Methods at Different Wavelengths

2016

A correlation between the absolute configuration and chiroptical properties of nonracemic 1,6,7-trisubstituted 2,3-dihydro-1H,5H-pyrazolo[1,2-a]pyrazoles was studied. A series of 16 novel representatives were prepared by Cu-catalyzed [3 + 2] cycloadditions of racemic (Z)-2-benzylidene-5-oxopyrazolidin-2-ium-1-ides to tert-butyl (S)-(3-oxopent-4-yn-2-yl)carbamate, and their structures were determined by NMR, VCD, ECD, and X-ray diffraction. A clear correlation between the sign of specific rotation and configuration at position C(1) allows for easy determination of the absolute configuration of 1,6,7-trisubstituted 2,3-dihydro-1H,5H-pyrazolo[1,2-a]pyrazoles by ECD and NMR. While VCD, requirin…
