Qualitative analysis of teachers' written self-reflections after implementation of a social-emotional learning program in Latvia
2016
The aim of the present study was to analyze teachers' written self-reflections after implementation of a social-emotional learning program, which was recently developed specifically for the sociocultural context of Latvia. The goal of the analysis was to examine how teachers reflect upon their own strengths and weaknesses in implementing the program. Participants were 630 classroom teachers (614 female and 16 male) aged 22 to 75 years (M = 45.04, SD = 9.95). Thematic analysis of the teachers' written self-reflections led to five thematic categories: (a) evaluation of pupils' performance, (b) teacher's professional competencies, (c) evaluation of the program, (d) relationship aspects, and (e…
Thermodynamics of Proton Binding of Halloysite Nanotubes
2016
In this paper, new information on physical and chemical properties of the widely used nanostructured Halloysite mineral are reported. Given that the Halloysite has a tubular structure formed by a variable number of wrapped layers containing Si-OH and Al-OH groups, their proton binding affinity was measured at different ionic strengths and ionic media by means of potentiometric measurements in heterogeneous phase. One protonation constant for the Si-OH groups and two for the Al-OH groups were determined. The protonation constant values increase with increasing of the ionic strength in all the ionic media. This suggests that the presence of a background electrolyte stabilizes the protonated s…
Randomized Controlled Trials and real life studies. Approaches and methodologies: a clinical point of view.
2014
Randomized Controlled Trials (RCTs) are the "gold standard" for evaluating treatment outcomes providing information on treatments "efficacy". They are designed to test a therapeutic hypothesis under optimal setting in the absence of confounding factors. For this reason they have high internal validity. The strict and controlled conditions in which they are conducted, leads to low generalizability because they are performed in conditions very different from real life usual care. Conversely, real life studies inform on the "effectiveness" of a treatment, that is, the measure of the extent to which an intervention does what is intended to do in routine circumstances. At variance to RCTs, real …
Why chronic obstructive pulmonary disease patients get so short of breath with limited activity
2013
equivalence despite the simplicity of MPT versus CPET as a surrogate to detect DH in COPD patients, by measuring the decrease in inspiratory capacity to reflect the increase in end-expiratory lung volume [3] . Lahaije et al. [2] have investigated whether DH as measured in the laboratory settings (CPET and MPT) reflects DH that is associated with dyspnea-limiting ADL. The authors conclude that both CPET and MPT can serve as a screening tool to identify patients who are susceptible to develop DH during ADL. In practice, MPT is simpler to obtain and is an inexpensive surrogate. However, sensitivity of MPT may not be optimal. When DH does not occur during CPET, it is unlikely to occur during AD…
Effects of inhaled corticosteroids in stable chronic obstructive pulmonary disease.
2011
Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) has been described as a heterogeneous multifactorial disorder associated with an abnormal inflammatory response of the peripheral airways and with variable morphologic, physiologic and clinical phenotypes. This notion of the disease is actually poorly supported by data, and there are substantial discrepancies and a weak correlation between inflammation, structural damage, functional impairment and degree of clinical symptoms. This problem is compounded by a poor understanding of the complexity and intricacies on the inflammatory pathways in COPD. Despite the evidence for efficacy of inhaled corticosteroids (ICS) on selected clinical endpoints in …
phi-Best proximity point theorems and applications to variational inequality problems
2017
The main concern of this study is to introduce the notion of $$\varphi $$ -best proximity points and establish the existence and uniqueness of $$\varphi $$ -best proximity point for non-self mappings satisfying $$(F,\varphi )$$ -proximal and $$(F,\varphi )$$ -weak proximal contraction conditions in the context of complete metric spaces. Some examples are supplied to support the usability of our results. As applications of the obtained results, some new best proximity point results in partial metric spaces are presented. Furthermore, sufficient conditions to ensure the existence of a unique solution for a variational inequality problem are also discussed.
A min-max principle for non-differentiable functions with a weak compactness condition
2009
A general critical point result established by Ghoussoub is extended to the case of locally Lipschitz continuous functions satisfying a weak Palais-Smale hypothesis, which includes the so-called non-smooth Cerami condition. Some special cases are then pointed out.
On the Minimal Solution of the Problem of Primitives
2000
Abstract We characterize the primitives of the minimal extension of the Lebesgue integral which also integrates the derivatives of differentiable functions (called the C -integral). Then we prove that each BV function is a multiplier for the C -integral and that the product of a derivative and a BV function is a derivative modulo a Lebesgue integrable function having arbitrarily small L 1 -norm.
Weak solution for Neumann (p,q)-Laplacian problem on Riemannian manifold
2019
We prove the existence of a nontrivial solution for a nonlinear (p, q)-Laplacian problem with Neumann boundary condition, on a non compact Riemannian manifold. The idea is to reduce the problem in variational form, which means to consider the critical points of the corresponding Euler-Lagrange functional in an Orlicz-Sobolev space. (C) 2019 Elsevier Inc.
