Discriminant analysis in diagnosing carcinoma of the pancreas and of the papilla of Vater

1994

The clinical and biochemical presentation of carcinoma of the pancreas (PC) and of the papilla of Vater (CPV) are very similar, and, consequently, detailed investigations are required to correctly distinguish between them. The aim of the present study was to select the clinical and biochemical variables that would most efficiently discriminate the precise site of tumor origin. The study group consisted of 72 patients with PC and 22 patients with CPV consecutively hospitalized in our department. The following clinical parameters were considered: age, asthenia, anorexia, vomiting, weight loss, pain, fever, pruritis, and constipation; the biochemical parameters considered were total, direct, a…

Measurement of energy expenditure by activity monitors: is it feasible to measure energy expenditure using tiny portable monitors?

2013

Physical inactivity has a major health effect worldwide. It is stated in the currently published physical activity recommendations for adults to promote and maintain health, that all healthy adults need moderate intensity physical activity for a minimum of 30 minutes, 5 days per week or vigorous intensity aerobic physical activity for a minimum of 20 minutes, 3 days per week. Physical activity can be defined as any bodily movement produced by the contraction of skeletal muscles that substantially increases energy expenditure and is characterised by its intensity, duration, frequency and mode of activity. Ideally, all these aspects should be recorded during physical activity measurements. Ho…

Dietary therapy and non-surgical periodontal treatment in obese patients with chronic periodontitis.

2018

Aim The effect of dietary weight loss intervention on periodontal therapy is unknown. Therefore, we aimed to evaluate whether weight loss improves the response of obese subjects to non-surgical periodontal treatment. Materials and methods This interventional study in obese patients was conducted at the University Hospital Dr. Peset (Valencia, Spain). Patients were divided into two groups with and without dietary therapy. All participants received non-surgical periodontal treatment. Periodontal, anthropometric and biochemical parameters were assessed at baseline and 12 weeks. Results A total of 78 patients were re-evaluated after intervention. All periodontal parameters improved in both grou…

Anthropometric parameters and permanent remission of comorbidities 10 years after open gastric bypass in a cohort with high prevalence of super-obesi…

2017

Abstract Background and aim Roux-en-Y gastric bypass (RYGB) is an effective treatment for weight loss in patients with morbid obesity. However, few studies have assessed its long-term efficacy in super-obese patients. The study objective was to analyse the long-term effectiveness of RYGB and its effect on improvement of comorbidities after 10 years of follow-up, and to compare the results depending on baseline BMI ( 2 vs ≥50 kg/m 2 ). Patients and methods A retrospective study was conducted in 63 patients referred for RYGB with a 10-year or longer follow-up period. Mean BMI before surgery was 55 kg/m 2 . Results Mean BMI decreased to 38.1 kg/m 2 at 10 years of follow-up. The success rates a…

Endothelial dysfunction in morbid obesity.

2013

Morbid obesity is a chronic multifunctional disease characterized by an accumulation of fat. Epidemiological studies have shown that obesity is associated with cardiovascular and metabolic disorders. Endothelial dysfunction, as defined by an imbalance between relaxing and contractile endothelial factors, plays a central role in the pathogenesis of these cardiometabolic diseases. Diminished bioavailability of nitric oxide (NO) contributes to endothelial dysfunction and impairs endothelium- dependent vasodilatation. But this is not the only mechanism that drives to endothelial dysfunction. Obesity has been associated with a chronic inflammatory process, atherosclerosis, and oxidative stress. …

Postnatal weight change is influenced by mother-newborn pair leptin levels

2000

We investigated serum leptin levels in 103 mother-newborn-pairs; Cord leptin was significantly higher than mother's leptin (5.7 ± 5.5 vs. 22.1 ± 19.9 ng/ml; p <0.001). Cord leptin was significantly higher in females than males (6.9 ± 6.3 vs. 3.9 ± 3.6 ng/ml respectively; p <0.001), and correlated with maternal leptin (r = 0.24; p = 0.001), gestational age (r = 0.54; p <0.001), and birth weight (r = 0.56; p <0.001). Neonatal leptin at the 4(th) day significantly correlated with percent weight loss in the first four days of life. These observations shed light on the origin of cord leptin and on the role of leptin in postnatal weight loss. (C) 2000 Elsevier Science Inc.

Positive airway pressure (PAP) treatment reduces glycated hemoglobin (HbA1c) levels in obstructive sleep apnea patients with concomitant weight loss …

2021

Abstract: Patients with obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) are at increased risk of developing metabolic disease such as diabetes. The effects of positive airway pressure on glycemic control are contradictory. We therefore evaluated the change in glycated hemoglobin (HbA1c) in a large cohort of OSA patients after long-term treatment with positive airway pressure. HbA1c levels were assessed in a subsample of the European Sleep Apnea Database [n=1608] at baseline and at long-term follow up with positive airway pressure therapy (mean 378.9 +/- 423.0 days). In a regression analysis, treatment response was controlled for important confounders. Overall, HbA1c decreased from 5.98 +/- 1.01% to 5.93 +/- …
