Value of recN sequences for species identification and as a phylogenetic marker within the family “Leuconostocaceae”
2008
The genera Leuconostoc, Oenococcus, and Weissella (family “Leuconostocaceae”) constitute a group of lactic acid bacteria of great interest in food microbiology. From the taxonomic point of view, they are considered phylogenetically coherent according to their 16S rRNA gene sequences and other macromolecules. These three genera were the focus of the present study; specifically, the resolution and discriminatory power of recN (encoding a DNA repair and genetic recombination protein) as a molecular marker at the species level were investigated. For this purpose, partial sequences (about 1200 nt) were obtained from 23 type strains and from several additional strains following direct amplificati…
Industrial application of selected lactic acid bacteria isolated from local semolinas for typical sourdough bread production
2016
Abstract Four obligate heterofermentative lactic acid bacteria (LAB) strains (Weissella cibaria PON10030 and PON10032 and Leuconostoc citreum PON 10079 and PON10080) were tested as single strain starters, mono-species dual strain starters, and multiple strain starter for the preparation and propagation of sourdoughs for the production of a typical bread at industrial level. The kinetics of pH and TTA during the daily sourdough refreshments indicated a correct acidification process for all trials. The concentration of lactic and acetic acid increased consistently during fermentation. The resulting molar ratios between these two organic acids in the experimental trials were lower than those o…
New CpCrCl2(PR3) complexes: physical properties and reduction chemistry
1998
Abstract Compounds CpCrCl2L ( L = PMe 2 Ph , 1 , PMePh 2 , 2 ; PPh 3 , 3 ) have been prepared. Their magnetic moment is in accord with the presence of three unpaired electron and a variable temperature 1H NMR investigation of 1 shows Curie-Weiss behavior. The 1H NMR, EPR and UV-visible spectra are in agreement with those of other previously reported compounds of the same family. An electrochemical investigation shows the accessibility of an irreversible reduction process. A parallel sodium reduction investigation of complexes CpCrCl2L (L = PMe3 and η1-dppe) suggests tjat the reduction process is followed by immediate chloride loss, and then by a ligand redistribution process to afford chrom…
Frictional Forces between Strongly Compressed, Nonentangled Polymer Brushes: Molecular Dynamics Simulations and Scaling Theory
2010
By means of molecular dynamics simulations and scaling theory we study the response of opposing polymer brushes to constant shear motion under good solvent conditions. Model systems that contain explicit solvent molecules (Lennard-Jones dimers) are compared to solvent-free systems while varying of the distance between the grafted layers and their molecular parameters, chain length and grafting density. Our study reveals a power-law dependence of macroscopic transport properties on the Weissenberg number, W, beyond linear response. For instance, we find that the kinetic friction constant scales as μ ∼ W0.57 for large values of W. We develop a scaling theory that describes our data and previo…
An integrated technological approach to the selection of lactic acid bacteria of flour origin for sourdough production
2013
article i nfo Several lactic acid bacteria (LAB) were evaluated in situ for their potential in sourdough fermentation. The strains belonged to Lactobacillus plantarum, Lactobacillus sakei, Lactobacillus sanfranciscensis, Leuconostoc citreum, Leuconostoc mesenteroides, Leuconostoc pseudomesenteroides and Weissella cibaria. LAB were used, in individual inocula, to carry out the fermentation of γ-ray treated (sterile) flour and untreated commercial flour, in order to evaluate their performances both in the absence and presence of the native microbiota of flour. The pH and total titratable acidity (TTA) showed a strong and fast acidification of the experimental sourdough determined by W. cibari…
Magnetic properties and61Ni Mössbauer spectroscopy of the ternary phosphide CrNiP
2008
The results of x-ray diffraction, dc magnetization, and 61Ni Mossbauer spectroscopy studies of the ternary phosphide CrNiP are reported. This compound crystallizes in the orthorhombic Co2P-type structure (space group Pnma) with the lattice parameters a = 5.7965(1) A, b = 3.5337(1) A, and c = 6.8123(2) A. NiCrP is a ferromagnet with Curie temperature TC = 135.1(1) K. The ferromagnetic-to-paramagnetic transition is characterized by the critical exponents β = 0.355(22), γ = 1.241(18), and δ = 4.585(20). Their values are close to those of a 3D Heisenberg ferromagnet. The temperature dependence of the magnetic susceptibility above TC follows the modified Curie–Weiss law with a paramagnetic Curie…
A rare complication of ERCP: Mallory-Weiss syndrome
2005
OBJECTIVE: To describe the management and outcome after endoscopic treatment of hematemesis by Mallory-Weiss Syndrome (MWS) occurred after CPRE (suspected choledocolithiasis). Background data: Although cough and retching is common during EGD or CPRE, MWS resulting from endoscopy seems to be uncommon (0.0001-0.04%) and always self-limiting. Case report: The patient was submitted to CPRE with the suspicion of choledocholithiasis. Eight hours after CPRE the patient presented with hematemesis amd hypotension. With emergency EGD, the AA identified a small bleeding mucosal tear (visible vessel with spurting) just proximal to the esophagogastric junction. The patient was safely treated with endosc…
Ferromagnetic and paramagnetic magnetization of implanted GaN:Ho,Tb,Sm,Tm films
2015
The SQUID magnetic measurements were performed on the GaN films prepared by metal-organic vapour phase epitaxy and implanted by Tb3+, Tm3+, Sm3+, and Ho3+ ions. The sapphire substrate was checked by the electron paramagnetic resonance method which showed a content of Cr3+ and Fe3+ impurities. The samples 5 × 5 mm2 were positioned in the classical straws and within an estimated accuracy of 10−6 emu, no ferromagnetic moment was detected in the temperature region of 2–300 K. The paramagnetic magnetization was studied for parallel and perpendicular orientation. In the case of GaN:Tb sample, at T = 2 K, a pronounced anisotropy with the easy axis perpendicular to the film was observed which can b…
Structure and magnetic properties of AgFeP2O7
2010
Abstract AgFeP2O7 has been synthesized by flux crystallization and characterized by single crystal and powder X-ray diffraction (sp. gr. P21/c, a=7.3298(2), b=7.9702(2), c=9.5653(2) A, β=111.842(1)°, V=518.68(2) A3) and FTIR-spectroscopy. The structure is composed of isolated iron octahedra and phosphate tetrahedra interconnected into 3D network with hexagonal channels, where silver counter-ions are located. The magnetic behavior of the compound approaches the Curie–Weiss equation with a Weiss constant θ=−165.9 K indicating strong antiferromagnetic interaction between iron(III) ions.
Interpretation of the Anomalous NaI Events
2001
Anomalous events, with scintillation decay times shorter than nuclear recoils, have been observed by the UKDMC and Saclay NaI experiments. By using the event categories observed in the EDELWEISS experiment, we propose to interpret the anomalous NaI events as surface nuclear recoils accompanied with a small energy loss of an escaping alpha particle. The discrimination performances of the NaI experiments which have not taken into account these events in their analysis, notably for axial WIMP interactions, must then be reevaluated.
