The Association of Arsenic Exposure and Arsenic Metabolism With the Metabolic Syndrome and Its Individual Components: Prospective Evidence From the S…
2018
Inorganic arsenic exposure is ubiquitous, and both exposure and interindividual differences in its metabolism have been associated with cardiometabolic risk. However, the associations of arsenic exposure and arsenic metabolism with the metabolic syndrome (MetS) and its individual components are relatively unknown. We used Poisson regression with robust variance to evaluate the associations of baseline arsenic exposure (urinary arsenic levels) and metabolism (relative percentage of arsenic species over their sum) with incident MetS and its individual components (elevated waist circumference, elevated triglycerides, reduced high-density lipoprotein cholesterol, hypertension, and elevated fast…
High liver RBP4 protein content is associated with histological features in patients with genotype 1 chronic hepatitis C and with nonalcoholic steato…
2011
Abstract Background and aim To investigate the hepatic expression of retinol-binding protein-4 (RBP4) in chronic hepatitis C (CHC) and nonalcoholic steatohepatitis (NASH) patients, and its association with biochemical and histological patterns of liver damage. Materials and methods Sixty-six genotype 1 CHC and 32 NASH patients were tested for hepatic RBP4 expression. Liver expression at immunostaining was scored as 0 (slight), 1 (mild), 2 (moderate), and 3 (intense). In addition, the mRNA and the quantitative protein expressions of RBP4 were tested by PCR and by western blot, respectively, in 12 NASH and 28 CHC patients. Twelve subjects undergoing elective cholecystectomy served as controls…
Autoantibodies to the islet antigen ICA69 occur in IDDM and in rheumatoid arthritis.
1995
Islet cell antigen (ICA) 69 is a newly-recognized islet cell antigen to which autoantibodies have been observed in prediabetic relatives of patients with insulin-dependent-diabetes mellitus (IDDM). Here we extend the earlier analysis of ICA69 antibodies to patients with recent-onset IDDM and to patients with other immune-mediated diseases. ICA69 antibodies were determined by Western blot using an affinity purified recombinant fusion protein of ICA69 and maltose binding protein. ICA69 antibody quantities were determined as titres using a titration curve of a standard serum as reference. Mean logarithmic ICA69 antibody titres were 3.4 (+/- 1.4) in 99 patients with acute IDDM compared to 2.8 (…
Androgen receptors and testosterone in men—Effects of protein ingestion, resistance exercise and fiber type
2007
The purpose of this study was to examine the impact of protein ingestion on circulating testosterone and muscle androgen receptor (AR) as well as on insulin-like growth factor-I (MGF and IGF-IEa) responses to a resistance exercise (RE) bout in (57-72 year) men. Protein (15 g whey) (n=9) or placebo (n=9) was consumed before and after a RE bout (5 sets of 10 repetition maximums), and vastus lateralis muscle biopsies were taken pre, 1 and 48 h post-RE. The protein ingestion blunted the RE-induced increase in serum free and total testosterone while the RE bout significantly increased muscle AR mRNA levels in older men (P<0.05). However, protein ingestion did not significantly affect AR mRNA or …
Surgical treatment of gastric cancer in Latvia: Results of centralized experience
2009
Although the mortality for gastric cancer is decreasing in Western Europe and United States, it still remains high in Eastern Europe. This study was aimed at evaluating short- and long-term results of surgical treatment of gastric cancer performed in Latvia Oncology Center.Retrospectively collected data from 461 patients who underwent gastrectomy with curative intent in Latvia Oncology Center from January 2001 to December 2005 were analyzed statistically. An average (range) of 92.2 (81-102) R0-R1 gastrectomies was performed each year. Post-operative complications occurred in 75 patients (16.3%); in-hospital mortality was 3.3%. The overall 5-year survival was 50.8%. In 444 cases (96.3%) there…
Role of Erythropoietin in Cerebral Glioma: An Innovative Target in Neuro-Oncology
2019
Background: Erythropoietin (EPO) is a cytokine primarily involved in the regulation of erythropoiesis. In response to hypoxia–ischemia, hypoxia-inducible factor 1 induces EPO production, which, in turn, inhibits apoptosis of erythroid progenitor cells. By the same mechanism and acting through other signaling pathways, EPO exerts neuroprotective effects. Increased resistance to hypoxia and decreased apoptosis are thought to be important mechanisms for tumor progression, including malignant glioma. Because recent studies have demonstrated that EPO and its receptor (EPOR) are expressed in several tumors and can promote tumor growth, in the present study, we investigated EPO and EPOR expression…
p53 is correlated with low BMI negative progesterone receptor status and recurring disease in patients with endometrial cancer
2011
Abstract Objective P53 tumor suppressor gene plays a role in endometrial carcinogenesis. Former studies described correlations between p53 protein overexpression in endometrial cancer and prognostic factors, measured by immunohistochemistry. But data is still controversial. The aim of this study was to measure p53 and phospho-p53 overexpression by Western blot and evaluate correlations between overexpression and prognostic and clinical factors. Phospho-p53 seems to be the functional p53 protein and was examined for the first time in endometrial cancer. Methods 40 patients with endometrial cancer were included in the study. A control group of 20 patients with normal endometrial tissue sample…
Identification of cyclin A as a molecular target of antinuclear antibodies (ANA) in hepatic and non-hepatic autoimmune diseases.
1996
Abstract Background/Aims: Antinuclear antibodies (ANA) are a diagnostic of various autoimmune diseases and also of autoimmune hepatitis type 1. The designation ANA describes a heterogeneous group of autoantibodies. In liver diseases, only a few nuclear target antigens have been molecularly identified and characterized. Cyclins play a central role in a cell cycle regulation, DNA transcription, and cell proliferation. Cyclin A was also identified as an integration site of the hepatitis B virus in a patient with hepatocellular carcinoma. In this study we identify cyclin A as a novel nuclear target protein of ANA. Methods: Sera of patients with autoimmune hepatitis (AIH) type 1 ( n =61), type 2…
Eutopic endometrium from women with endometriosis does not exhibit neurotrophic properties
2012
The role of neurotrophins in eutopic endometrium from endometriosis-patients was investigated in a prospective study using immunofluorescence-staining, Western blot and a neuronal growth assay. The nerve growth factor is expressed in primary endometrial cell culture from women with and without endometriosis. Western blot analysis of endometrial biopsies or uterine fluid from patients with and without endometriosis shows no difference in the neurotrophin expression. We could not find a difference between patients with and without endometriosis with regards to the neurite outgrowth of sensory ganglia when treated with conditioned cultured medium or uterine fluid. This result refutes the assum…
Expression of caveolin-1 in tooth germ, ameloblastoma and ameloblastic carcinoma
2020
Background The caveolin-1 protein (structural component of membrane caveolae) plays important roles in several biological functions, such as endocytosis, cell adhesion, and cell signaling. However, this protein has been associated with mechanisms of tumorigenesis in several neoplasms. The expression patterns and roles of caveolin-1 in the oral epithelium and in embryonic and odontogenic tumor tissues are still unclear. Material and Methods The expression of caveolin-1 was evaluated in samples of the normal gingival epithelium (n=7), human tooth germ (TG) (n=12), ameloblastoma (AM) (n=83), and ameloblastic carcinoma (AC) (n=9) by immunohistochemistry. Additionally, AM samples were analyzed b…
