’-omics’ technology and human reproduction: reproductomics
2012
The success of assisted reproduction technology is highly dependent on a precise selection of gametes and embryos and determining the best endometrial window for embryo implantation. For many years, morphological criteria have constituted the only way to assess spermatozoon, oocytes, embryos and endometrial samples in order to improve outcomes. However, this approach has reached a ceiling of success and has been related to unacceptably high rates of multiple pregnancies. New technologies have been developed in order to improve the results and reduce risks via better selection of those gametes and embryos with the highest pregnancy potential, and of more favorable endometrial environments fo…
El derecho de tenuta como garantía de la restitución dotal en el derecho foral valenciano
2019
The right of «tenuta» arises once the year of mourning —«any de plor»— has elapsed where the heirs to the deceased husband have neither returned the dowry —«exovar»— to the surviving wife nor paid the dotal increase —«creix»—. The widow then obtains possession of the deceased husband's property and is entitled to its usufruct by operation of law. Its purpose is to act as a guarantee, since it aims to secure the return of the «exovar». The «tenuta» ceases when the heirs return the dowry and pay the dotal increase, which means that if they do so immediately after the marriage has ceased, the right does not take effect. The widow may also be deprived of the «tenuta» if she retains it malicious…
El precio de ser itinerante. Viajes, acompañamiento y espacios cortesanos de la reina Leonor de Sicilia (r. 1349-1375)
2021
This article is an attempt to detail which logistical, economic and human implications had the itinerancy of the medieval monarchy. For this reason, the paper focuses on the characteristics of the itinerancy of Eleanor of Sicily, third wife of Pedro the Ceremonious and queen of the Crown of Aragon between 1349 and 1375. Through the analysis of her documentation, from chancery and treasury resources, it has been possible to establish an itinerary of the queen for three years, from 1354 to 1357. The analysis of this itinerary allows us to see the confluence of the royal couple entourages and the consequences of the beginning of the Dos Pedros war. At the same time, the paper focuses on the pe…
The impact of cigarette smoking on the health of descendants
2012
This paper presents a review of the literature on the effects of cigarette smoking on the health of descendants and the possible mechanisms that lead to them. The evidence of the effects of prenatal cigarette smoke exposure on neonatal morbidity is clear. A number of birth defects have their incidence raised by maternal cigarette smoking during pregnancy. Prenatal smoke exposure also increases the risk of infant irritability, inattention, decreased response to inanimate auditory stimuli and hypertonia. In addition, the prevalence of obesity in preschool children is higher if the mother smoked during pregnancy, as well as the presence of male or female subfertility/infertility in adult life.…
Job in Literature
1997
This classic counsel of despair is uttered by Job’s wife in the wake of all the evils which befall him (Job 2:9). It is preceded by the question, ‘Dost thou still retain thine integrity?’ Her words may have been motivated by bitterness over what she and Job had endured (the Septuagint and the apocryphal Testament of Job both give her a lengthy speech in which she catalogues their degradation). Possibly she felt that blasphemy would have sudden death as a consequence, and that this would put Job out of his misery. In any case, the import of her words is to question the value of ‘righteousness’ (cf. Tobit 2:11–14).
The impact of workload and job satisfaction on occupational stress -A comparison among newly qualified and experienced midwives in Poland.
2022
BACKGROUND: Midwives are potentially exposed to high levels of occupational stress. The level of stress may be related to the job demands and job resources, as well as midwife seniority. To date, few studies on the determinants of occupational stress have examined Polish midwives. OBJECTIVE: This study aims to investigate the roles of workload, job satisfaction, and seniority in shaping the stress levels of midwives in Poland. METHODS: A cross-sectional approach and structural equation modeling (SEM) were used to compare two groups: newly qualified midwives (NQMs; n = 79) and experienced midwives (n = 99). All data were collected between January and November 2018. RESULTS: Analysis revealed…
Joint planning in conversations with a person with aphasia
2021
Abstract This study explores practices employed by a person with aphasia (PWA) and his wife to organize joint planning sequences and negotiate deontic rights (a participants' entitlement to initiate planning sequences and the entitlement to accept or reject a plan). We analyze two different conversations between a man with aphasia and his wife and their adult daughter. Using Conversation Analysis (CA), we identify practices that further the PWA's participation in the interaction while planning afternoon activities together with his wife. The PWA contributes to the planning talk by initiating and modifying planning sequences. The spouse supports his participation by aligning with his initiat…
Collaborative storytelling with a person with aphasia - Promoting agency in a multiparty interaction
2021
Introduction: This study explores practices employed by a person with aphasia (PWA) and his wife to organize collaborative storytelling in a multiparty interaction. We identify practices that further the PWA’s agency – his impact on action – while he is telling a story together with his wife. Method: Using conversation analysis (CA), we carried out a case study of a successful storytelling sequence involving a 39-year-old man with anomic aphasia during a conversation with friends. Analysis: The PWA contributed to the storytelling by initiating the story sequence and by producing short but significant utterances in which he provided essential information and displayed epistemic authority. Th…
Grandparent-grandchild relationships from the children's perspective: shared activities and socialization styles.
2010
The objective of this study is to describe the relationships between grandchildren and their favourite grandparents, by studying the socialization styles used by latter and the shared activities undertaken. The participants were 360 children between 10 and 12 years old, who completed the grandparent-grandchild relationship questionnaire of Rico, Serra and Viguer (2001) and the socialization questionnaire of Rey and Ruiz (1990). The results demonstrate the importance of gender and family line in the selection of the favourite grandparent, differences being shown in the types of shared activities and in socialization styles. It is concluded that in the majority of cases the profile of the fav…
Vaccination against HPV-Associated Neoplasias
2014
Neoplasias associated with anogenital human papilloma viruses (HPV) are characterised by high patient morbidity and mortality and by appreciable limitations in the patientʼs quality of life. Each year 530,000 women worldwide and 4800 women in Germany develop cervical cancer 1, 2. Biomolecular and epidemiological studies carried out in the past 25 years have demonstrated causal link between persisting infections with HPV 16 and HPV 18 and at least 11 other so-called high-risk HPVs (HR-HPVs) and the development of cervical cancer and its precursor lesions (so-called dysplasias or, respectively, cervical intraepithelial neoplasias – CIN). HPV 16, HPV 18 and other HR-HPVs are also the causes of…
