Introducing the Temporal Distortion Index to perform a bidimensional analysis of renewable energy forecast

Abstract Wind has been the largest contributor to the growth of renewal energy during the early 21st century. However, the natural uncertainty that arises in assessing the wind resource implies the occurrence of wind power forecasting errors which perform a considerable role in the impacts and costs in the wind energy integration and its commercialization. Towards farm-level health management of offshore wind farms for maintenance improvements

This paper studies a conceptual architecture for health management of offshore wind farms. To this aim, various necessary enablers of a health management sys- tem are presented to improve reliability and availability while optimizing maintenance costs. The main focus lies on improving existing condition monitoring systems based on concepts of condition-based maintenance and relia- bility centered maintenance. A brief review of the rel- evant state-of-the-art is presented and gaps to be filled towards realization of such health management system are discussed.

Installation of floating wind turbines at the offshore site is a challenging task. A significant part of the time efficiency and costs are related to the installation methods which are sensitive to weather conditions. Due to safety reasons, these operations are normally performed within specific sea state limits, which are derived from numerical modelling and analysis of hazardous events. Effect of a Passive Tuned Mass Damper on Offshore Installation of a Wind Turbine Nacelle

Abstract Although the installation of offshore wind turbines takes place in calm seas, successful mating of wind turbine components can be challenging due to the relative motions between the two mating parts. This work investigates the effect of a passive tuned mass damper on the mating processes of a nacelle for a 10-megawatt (MW) offshore wind turbine. A nacelle with lifting wires and a monopile with a mass damper are respectively modelled using the multibody formulation in the HAWC2 program. An experiment on wind energy

We discuss an experiment on wind energy performed with home-made apparatus. The experiment reproduces a laboratory windmill, which can pump water from a lower level to a higher one. By measuring the gain of the gravitational potential energy of the pumped water, one can determine the power extracted from the wind. The activity was carried out with high-school students, in the framework of the Italian National Plan for Scientific Degrees-Physics. The PERIMA project is about the development of an extensible wind tower able to support a wind machine for several hundred kW at its optimal working height, up to more than 50 m.
