Gender equality has not been achieved anywhere in the world. One persistent, global challenge is that women struggle to advance to management positions in the workplace. This chapter focuses on the area of management as it relates to women’s careers. Well-known metaphors that highlight the complexity of the problems women face in their careers are presented. Narratives by women managers about spousal support for their careers

In this article we present a qualitative study of spousal support for the careers of women managers. The research material consists of the narratives of 25 women managers in Finland. The study has two main implications. Firstly, unlike previous studies, we use a narrative approach to demonstrate that a woman manager's career and spousal support are experienced as ambiguous and evolving over the career. The support was constructed by the women managers as flourishing, irrelevant, deficient or inconsistent. Partnership formation and dissolution over the life course: applying sequence analysis and event history analysis in the study of recurrent events

We present two types of approach to the analysis of recurrent events for discretely measured data, and show how these methods can complement each other when analysing co-residential partnership histories. Sequence analysis is a descriptive tool that gives an overall picture of the data and helps to find typical and atypical patterns in histories. Event history analysis is used to make conclusions about the effects of covariates on the timing and duration of the partnerships. Although women have contributed to the development of science from the earliest times, their participation has not always been noticed. The breakthrough in the career path of women was World War I, in the consequence of which women gained the possibility of studying at universities and pursuing the academic activity. The presented article is an attempt at bringing to light the memory of the women-pioneers and their scientific acdvity in the field of Polish pedagogy at the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries.

Women's Place in Finnish Proverbs from Childhood

The purpose of this article is to introduce some features of the relationship between proverbs and gender in Finnish folklore tradition. I focus on pedagogical speech using proverbs in the life-stories from the end of the 19th century and the beginning of the 20th century. The main interest is on bringing up children concentrating on the written memories and the everyday life of ordinary people. This deals with the private level of education in childhood memories.

Florence Nightingale as a Victorian career woman

The chapter focuses on the role of Florence Nightingale (1820-1910) in turning nursing into a trained profession and a viable and respectable career option for Victorian women seeking employment outside of the home. Nightingale's accomplishments and her thoughts on women's lot in life as expressed in her essay "Cassandra", are presented against the backdrop of the ideology of separate spheres which circumscribes women within the domestic domain.
