The association between achievement goal motivation and counterproductive work behavior: the moderating effect of work engagement and the Dark Triad
2020
BackgroundThe objective of the article is to describe the association between counterproductive work behavior (CWB), achievement goal motivation and the moderating variables: work engagement and the Dark Triad (DT). The theoretical bases of the tested models are: the four-factor theory of achievement goal motivation (Elliot & McGregor), the CWB conception of Spector, the JD-R model of Demerouti, the work engagement model of Schaufeli and the DT conception of Paulhus and Williams.Participants and procedureAn internet study was conducted with 138 office employees as participants. The variables were measured us-ing the Polish versions of the following tools: achievement goal motivation – A…
Is work engagement related to healthy cardiac autonomic activity? Evidence from a field study among Finnish women workers
2012
The present study investigated whether work engagement is related to and can explain healthy cardiac autonomic activity as indicated by decreased heart rate (HR; i.e., sympathetic and parasympathetic activity) and increased high-frequency power (HFP) of heart rate variability (i.e., parasympathetic activity). A total of 30 healthy Finnish female cleaning workers underwent an ambulatory monitoring period of two nights and two regular workdays, and mean values of work period HR and HFP were utilized as dependent variables. Correlations revealed that work engagement was, as hypothesized, negatively related to HR and positively to HFP. Furthermore, in hierarchical linear regression analysis, wo…
Relationships between work-family culture and work attitudes at both individual and the department level
2011
There is a need to better understand the nature of work-family culture and its relationships with job-related outcomes. The main objective of this study was to investigate the associations between a supportive work-family culture and work attitudes (i.e., job satisfaction, work engagement, turnover intentions) at both the individual and work departmental level. Survey-based data were gathered from 52 Finnish work departments (1219 individuals) in the domains of health care, ICT, and the paper industry. Data were analysed via multilevel structural equation modelling. Work-family culture was assessed via managers’ supportiveness, organizational time demands, and the expected career consequenc…
Iesaistes darbā saistība ar stresa pārvarēšanas stratēģijām
2017
Bakalaura darba pētījuma mērķis bija noskaidrot iesaistes darbā un stresa pārvarēšanas stratēģiju saistības un kuras abu mainīgo skalas ir ciešāk savstarpēji saistītas. Kādas stresa pārvarēšanas stratēģijas tiek izvēlētas pie lielākas iesaistes darbā. Pētījumā piedalījās 73 respondenti: 52 sievietes un 21 vīrietis, vecumā no 23-50 gadiem. Pētījumā izmantoju divas aptaujas, Utrehtas darba iesaistes skalu ( UWES) īso versiju (UWES-9, Utrecht Work Engagement Scale , Shaufeli & Bakker, 2003) un Īso stresa pārvarēšanas aptauju (The Brief Coping Orientation for Problem Experiences Inventory, Carver, 1997). Iegūto daru analīze uzrādīja nozīmīgas korelācijas starp atsevišķām aptauju skalām un tas n…
Emotional Agency at Work: The Development and Validation of a Measure
2022
Despite intensive research on agency in education and work environments, the topic remains underexplored through the lens of emotions. This study conducted the development and validation of a quantitative measure to explore emotional agency in working life. Empirical data (N = 240) were collected via a web-based survey within the professional domains of healthcare and real estate services. The participants’ age, educational level, and gender corresponded to the domain-specific and general employee distribution in Finland. The questionnaire items were based on a theoretical construct of emotional agency at work. Exploratory factor analysis indicated that emotional agency includes two dimensi…
Green inclusive leadership and green creativity in the tourism and hospitality sector: serial mediation of green psychological climate and work engag…
2021
Green creativity contributes to green innovation and green sustainability in both the manufacturing and services sectors. However, academic research offering more nuanced insights about the drivers of green creativity (GCRT) is deficient, particularly within the tourism and hospitality sector. The present study thus theorized a model based on the Componential Theory of Creativity (CTC) to examine green inclusive leadership (GIL), green psychological climate (GPC), and green work engagement (GWE) as antecedents of GCRT. The model not only posits the direct associations but also accommodates a more complex interaction of variables by anticipating the mediation effect of GPC and GWE on the ass…
Burnout, work engagement and workaholism among highly educated employees: Profiles, antecedents and outcomes
2014
The present study examined the longitudinal profiles of burnout, engagement and workaholism among highly educated employees. First, the latent profile modeling indicated two latent classes: Engaged and Exhausted-Workaholic. Second, the results revealed that employees with the Engaged profile experienced high levels of energy and dedication, whereas employees with the Exhausted-Workaholic profile experienced exhaustion, cynicism and workaholism. Social pessimism in the transition from high education to work predicted poor subjective well-being at work. Further, workaholism decreased during the career among members of the Exhausted-Workaholic profile suggesting positive direction during caree…

Interpersonal work resources and school personnel well-being before and after lockdown during the first phase of the COVID-19 pandemic in Finland
2022
This two-wave mixed-methods study used the job demands and resources model to examine the effects of the COVID-19 pandemic on school personnel's work well-being (including burnout, work engagement, and sense of belonging) in spring 2020 in Finland in particular with respect to collegial relationships (respectful engagement) and leadership support. A pre-lockdown survey was administered prior to the pandemic (in January–February, n = 437) and a post-lockdown survey was administered after the two-month lockdown (at the end of May, n = 270). At post-lockdown, the school personnel reported, on average, more exhaustion, less work engagement (measured as enthusiasm and energy at work), and a decr…
The energy and identification continua of burnout and work engagement : Developmental profiles over eight years
2017
Abstract Understanding of the mutual developmental dynamics between burnout and work engagement is limited due to the lack of longitudinal studies with long follow-ups and multi-wave data. This study sought to identify subgroups of employees characterized by long-term exhaustion-vigor (energy continuum) and cynicism-dedication (identification continuum). A further important aim was to investigate differences between the identified subgroups in their experiences of progress in their personal work goals. Five-wave, eight-year follow-up data among Finnish white-collar professionals ( n = 168) were studied using Latent Profile Analysis (LPA). The analysis yielded three exhaustion-vigor subgrou…
