Head, chest and femur injury in teenage pedestrian–SUV crash; mass influence on the speeds

2018

This work studies the teenage pedestrian–sport utility vehicle (SUV) crash; injury to the vital parts of the body, such as the head and chest, and to the femur is evaluated. More advanced injury criteria are applied, as provided in the rules. The multibody technique is applied by making use of SimWise software and of the teenager anthropomorphic model, the use of which is now consolidated. Head injury criterion (HIC) is used for the head, thoracic trauma index (TTI) criterion for the thorax in the case of side impact and 3 ms criterion in the case of frontal impact, while the force criterion is used for the femur. Both the TTI and femur load evaluation require non-substantial modifications…

Paclitaxel and beta-lapachone synergistically induce apoptosis in human retinoblastoma Y79 cells by downregulating the levels of phospho-Akt.

2009

Paclitaxel (PTX) and beta-lapachone (LPC) are naturally occurring compounds that have shown a large spectrum of anticancer activity. In this article we show for the first time that PTX/LPC combination induces potent synergistic apoptotic effects in human retinoblastoma Y79 cells. Combination of suboptimal doses of PTX (0.3 nM) and LPC (1.5 microM) caused biochemical and morphological signs of apoptosis at 48 h of treatment. These effects were accompanied by potent lowering in inhibitor of apoptosis proteins and by activation of Bid and caspases 3 and 6 with lamin B and PARP breakdown. PTX/LPC combination acted by favoring p53 stabilization through a lowering in p-Akt levels and in ps166-MDM…

Regulation ofMUC1Expression in Human Mammary Cell Lines by the c-ErbB2 and Ras Signaling Pathways

2001

The MUC1 protein is a highly O-glycosylated transmembrane molecule that is expressed at the luminal surface of most glandular epithelial cells and is upregulated in carcinomas. Here, we report the effect of the activation of the c-ErbB2 --Ras pathway on the expression of the MUC1 gene in the nontumorigenic mammary cell lines MTSV1-7 and HB2 and in the malignant cell lines T47D and ZR75. Endogenous levels of MUC1 mRNA and protein in HB2 clones permanently overexpressing c-ErbB2 or V12-H-Ras were markedly reduced compared with levels in the parental cell lines. Furthermore, in transient transfection assays, the transcription of a CAT reporter construct driven by the MUC1 promoter was inhibite…

Trust-enhanced data integrity model

2012

In this paper we propose an enhancement of data integrity model. The proposed model is based on the idea of Biba integrity model but uses more elaborated integrity measurements. Since integrity can be seen as “trustworthiness of data and resources”, we propose to utilize trustworthiness opinions from subjective logic and express levels of integrity as levels of trustworthiness.

The interplay of interoceptive accuracy, facets of interoceptive sensibility, and trait anxiety: A network analysis

2021

Abstract Interoception is the sense of the body's physiological state. Both the ability to accurately perceive bodily signals, and the self-reported sensibility for the body were assumed to be reciprocally associated with negative affect. Up to now, the specific interplay between dimensions of interoception and negative affect remains largely unknown. We investigated the interplay of cardioceptive accuracy assessed by a heartbeat tracking task, facets of interoceptive sensibility as measured by the Multidimensional Assessment of Interoceptive Awareness, and trait anxiety as measured by the trait version of the State-Trait-Anxiety inventory across two studies (n = 243) using a network analyt…

Comments on Guimarães & Sawaya. Pretending to be venomous: is a snake's head shape a trustworthy signal to a predator?

2011

Several species of non-venomous snake are known to flatten their heads when disturbed, and this behaviour has been suggested to be a mimicry of vipers (Arnold & Ovenden 2002, Hailey & Davies 1986, Young et al. 1999). Using plasticine models, Guimaraes & Sawaya (2011) tested the antipredatory function of a triangular head shape in snakes. Their article presents the first published empirical experiment testing the adaptive significance of vipers’ triangular head shape. Guimaraes & Sawaya (2011) found no support for the viper mimicry hypothesis. Accordingly, they concluded that ‘the shape of [the] head seemed not to confer advantage itself’. Although the use of plasticine models is a generally…

Dolomitization as an eventualdetermining factor in the colour alteration index (CAI)

1993

Abstract The Colour Alteration Index of conodonts (CAI) is indicative of the degree of alteration of organic material that exists in the interior of the conodonts. This CAI is used ordinarily in the determination of paleotemperatures. More frequent findings of abnormally high CAI values, equivalent to paleotemperatures that are not compatible with temperatures obtained by other more trustworthy methods, has taken us to use values not superior to 6 for the establishment of paleotemperatures. The CAI values measured in specimens proceding from dolostones in the Iberian Range (Spain) show in this way a certain degree of incompatibility with geological data. These anomalous values are the conse…

Ocho notas sobre la Casa Farnsworth de Ludwig Mies van der Rohe

2020

Mies was in the top of his career when he built the Farnsworth House. The analysis of this work shows some characteristics of his architectural thought: the relationships between architecture and nature, the definition of the pavilion type, his concept of architectural space, the role of structure and limits, the idea free plan and the meaning of construction

rhoB encoding a UV-inducible Ras-related small GTP-binding protein is regulated by GTPases of the Rho family and independent of JNK, ERK, and p38 MAP…

1998

The small GTPase RhoB is immediate-early inducible by DNA damaging treatments and thus part of the early response of eukaryotic cells to genotoxic stress. To investigate the regulation of this cellular response, we isolated the gene for rhoB from a mouse genomic library. Sequence analysis of the rhoB gene showed that its coding region does not contain introns. The promoter region of rhoB harbors regulatory elements such as TATA, CAAT, and Sp1 boxes but not consensus sequences for AP-1, Elk-1, or c-Jun/ATF-2. The rhoB promoter was activated by UV irradiation, but not by 12-O-tetradecanoylphorbol-13-acetate treatment. rhoB promoter deletion constructs revealed a fragment of 0.17 kilobases in …
