Advanced electrospun matrices based on polysaccharide derivatives for applications in regenerative medicine
2021
The complete regeneration of damaged human tissues and organs is still a significant challenge. The integrative use of biomaterials, cells and bioactive factors in all-in-one devices exploits all current knowledge of materials science, nanotechnology and stem cell biology to best mimic the complex hierarchical architecture of native tissues. The artificial microenvironment design must be properly tuned to match the physicochemical features of the target, offering adequate nanoscale patterns and biological domains for cellular interactions. Scaffolds must promote and guide the regeneration route by mimicking host signalling pathways through the controlled release and retention of drugs or gr…
The wounded self-portrait as an expression of the experiential dimension of disease
2020
The present article aims at giving an ethical-anthropological interpretation of the body wounded by the disease, under the perspective of the wounded self-portrait, a genre selected by some artists who, between the nineteenth and the twentieth century, pictured their physical or psychological malaise (Van Gogh, Kahlo, Munch, Bacon, Klee). Getting acquainted with artistic language, particularly when it arises from personal experience, has an educational value for healthcare professional, as it helps to catch “the history from below”, as Roy Porter called it, which is the history from the patient’s perspective. Dans cet article les auteurs donnent une interprétation anthropologique au corps h…
Multicomponent Antibiofilm Lipid Nanoparticles as Novel Platform to Ameliorate Resveratrol Properties: Preliminary Outcomes on Fibroblast Proliferati…
2023
The well-being of skin and mucous membranes is fundamental for the homeostasis of the body and thus it is imperative to treat any lesion quickly and correctly. In this view, polyphenols might assist and enhance a successful wound healing process by reducing the inflammatory cascade and the production of free radicals. However, they suffer from disadvantageous physico–chemical properties, leading to restricted clinical use. In this work, a complex mixture of PEGylated lipid, Glyceryl monoester, 18-β-Glycyrrhetinic Acid and Menthol was designed to entrap Resveratrol (RSV) as the active ingredient and further produce lipid nanoparticles (LNPs) by homogenization followed by high-freq…
2016 WHO GLOBAL GUIDELINES FOR THE PREVENTION OF SURGICAL SITE INFECTION: A NEW STEP TO IMPROVE PATIENT'S SAFETY BEFORE, DURING AND AFTER SURGERY
2017
Surgical site infection (SSI) are among the most preventable health-care-associated infections and are a substantial burden to health-care systems and service payers worldwide in terms of patient morbidity, mortality, and additional costs. SSI prevention is complex and requires the integration of a range of measures before, during and after surgery. No international guidelines are available and incosistencies in the interpretations of evidence and recommendations of national guidelines have been identified. Given the burden of SSI worldwide, the numerous gaps in evidence-based guidance, and the need for standardisation and a global approach, WHO decided to prioritise the development of evid…
Use of porcine collagen matrix (Mucograft®) to promote the wound healing in the oral cavity
2015
The aim of this study was to evaluate the use of a new collagen matrix (Mucograft®; Geistlich Pharma AG, Wol- husen, Switzerland) in the soft tissue reconstruction after excisional biopsy. The healing of soft tissues after bioptical excision tends to heal by secondary intention. To avoid this, the soft tissue grafts can be harvested from the palate, retromolar pad, or (if available) edentulous site. Disadvantages of harvesting the graft from the retromolar pad and edentulous site are minimal amount of tissue availability and thinner grafts are obtained. The use of collagen matrix is also reported in literature and could represent an optimal solution in the future. Mucograft® is a pure colla…
Hastening of wound healing of mucosa by means of aminoacids combined to sodium hyaluronate after oral biopsy: an open trial.
2014
Sodium hyaluronate has been widely used in order to promote wound healing in oral cavity for its anti-inflammatory effects. Aim of this clinical trial was to evaluate the efficacy of aminoacids added to topical sodium hyaluronate, in minor oral surgery. After surgery by means of Quantic molecular resonance scalpel, in 27 patients a gel with sodium hyaluronate has been applied directly on the surgical wound, in order to favorite healing by secondary intention. Furthermore, gel has been applied 3-4times/day, after meals and oral hygiene. Hemostatic effect, edema and pain symptoms by VAS (Visual Analogue Scale;0-100), and clinical healing (full, partial, absent) have been evaluated at T#1(2hrs…
A particular case of suicide committed with a double barreled shotgun
2011
Self-injuries are some of the most frequently causes of death in youth; suicides has been reported as the second or third most common cause of death in children and adolescents worldwide. The autors describe a particular case of suicide of a 17-year-old-boy, who was found dead on the floor of his bedroom with a large shogun contact wound on his head.
A special case of murder committed by pitchfork
2011
The autors describe a murder case, happened in a rural environment, done with an agricultural instrument with "four peak". The use of agricultural instruments to commit a murder, frequent in the past, nowadays is unusual if not in a rural environment.
Enhancement of lysine acetylation accelerates wound repair
2013
In physiopathological conditions, such as diabetes, wound healing is significantly compromised and chronic complications, including ulcers, may occur. In a mouse model of skin repair, we recently reported that wound treatment with Sirtuin activators and class I HDAC inhibitors induced keratinocyte proliferation and enhanced healing via a nitric oxide (NO) dependent mechanism. We observed an increase in total protein acetylation in the wound area, as determined by acetylation of α-tubulin and histone H3 Lysine 9. We reasoned that this process activated cell function as well as regulated gene expression to foster tissue repair. We report here that the direct activation of P300/CBP-associated …
The eSports conundrum: Is the sports sciences community ready to face them? A perspective
2020
The reality of eSports is something much more complex than individual users playing video games. There are several characteristics that eSports have in common with traditional sports: from the spirit of competition to the structural composition of the teams, including the increase in performance with training and practice, up to the injuries and physical and psychological stress of the athlete. The number of scientific papers interested in this reality is still relatively low, although in recent years there has been a significant increase in this regard. Probably the lack of knowledge of the world of eSports by inexperts can represent an initial obstacle in the approach to this environment.…
