La responsabilidad del profesorado en la enseñanza de la puntuación
2013
[EN] Proper usage of punctuation marks is fundamental for good writing. Teachers are a key factor in the learning process of students¿ command of punctuation marks as they are the major source of information for learners. This article offers various studies which show the teachers¿ command of the usage of punctuation marks and the most important difficulties they encounter in their teaching experience. Similary, we review also some research that are far from the normative point of view and focus on psycholinguistic aspects in which it is to see how children learn to score and how adults can get better use of signs.
The reflexivity of human languaging and Nigel Love's two orders of language
2017
Abstract Nigel Love's distinction between first-order language and second-order language exposes the fallacy of the code view of linguistic communication. Persons do not ‘use’ the forms that are said to constitute a pre-existing language system; they adapt and shape their bodily behaviour, including their vocalizing, in accordance with community-level norms and practices that have historical continuity and thus define the cultural-historical traditions of a community. Individuals normatively orient to these continuities and self-reflexively engage in forms of situated appropriation of them as they flexibly adapt them to the requirements of situations in the pursuance of their goals. Love ha…
A third space: discursive realizations of immigrant identity
2015
The relationship between additional language use and identity has long been of interest to scholars studying immigration and multilingualism. While oral language is frequently examined as a site for the negotiation of identity, written texts can also be studied for information about how language learners position themselves within their receiving culture. This study looks at the relationship between pronoun choice and identity in additional language academic writing by first generation immigrants in Norway, arguing that language learners signal solidarity with certain subject positions through their use of pronouns. Examining English-language texts discussing themes related to language pres…
Assessing learners’ writing skills in a SLA study: Validating the rating process across tasks, scales and languages
2014
There is still relatively little research on how well the CEFR and similar holistic scales work when they are used to rate L2 texts. Using both multifaceted Rasch analyses and qualitative data from rater comments and interviews, the ratings obtained by using a CEFR-based writing scale and the Finnish National Core Curriculum scale for L2 writing were examined to validate the rating process used in the study of the linguistic basis of the CEFR in L2 Finnish and English. More specifically, we explored the quality of the ratings and the rating scales across different tasks and across the two languages. As the task is an integral part of the data-gathering procedure, the relationship of task p…
Measuring orthographic transparency and morphological-syllabic complexity in alphabetic orthographies
2017
This narrative review discusses quantitative indices measuring differences between alphabetic languages that are related to the process of word recognition. The specific orthography that a child is acquiring has been identified as a central element influencing reading acquisition and dyslexia. However, the development of reliable metrics to measure differences between language scripts hasn’t received much attention so far. This paper therefore reviews metrics proposed in the literature for quantifying orthographic transparency, syllabic complexity, and morphological complexity of alphabetic languages. The review included searches of Web of Science, PubMed, PsychInfo, Google Scholar, and var…
VOT production, writing skills, and general proficiency in multilingual learners of French: approaching the intertwinement of different linguistic le…
2021
Abstract We investigate the interrelations between pronunciation and writing skills in French as a foreign language produced by two groups of bilingual learners (German-Russian; German-Turkish) and a monolingually raised German control group (each n = 10). As an indicator of the learners’ pronunciation skills, we refer to a perceptually relevant acoustic feature of stop production, “Voice Onset Time” (VOT). Our aim is to explore whether the learners’ proficiency at the level of pronunciation is mirrored in (1) their global language competencies and (2) their writing skills. We applied an extreme-cases approach based on the learners’ VOT productions in L3 French. Both positive and negative d…
Retrouvailles avec Hélène Lenoir
2012
La presente entrevista intenta una aproximación general a la obra de Hélène Lenoir, escritora francesa contemporánea poco conocida por el gran público. A lo largo de la misma se abordan sus comienzos y su ubicación en el panorama literario francés al tiempo que se destacan los autores que la han influenciado. Se pasa revista, también, a las principales características temáticas y estilísticas de su creación literaria haciendo hincapié en la problemática de las relaciones tormentosas, verdadero eje ordenador de su obra narrativa. The goal of this interview is to establish a first approach to the work of Hélène Lenoir, a contemporary and relatively unknown to the public at large author. We wi…
Metaphors in dialogue: feminist literary critics, translators and writers
2011
This article seeks to investigate the changing perception of the term “translation” in feminist TS thanks to a continuous dialogue with other fields such as, feminist literary criticism, post-structuralism, postcolonial studies and cultural studies that have borrowed and utilised the notion of translation. “Translation” has become a “travelling concept” for feminist scholars who have utilized it in a metaphorical way for a feminist critique of language and ideology. The essay proposes a new approach to feminist translation studies from an interdisciplinary perspective that takes into account key-concepts and figurative language in different feminisms in dialogue. Metaphors of translation an…
Selostuksesta tulkintoihin : aineistojen esittäminen lukiolaisten historian esseissä
2019
Artikkelissa selvitetään tiedonalakohtaisten tekstitaitojen viitekehyksessä, miten lukiolaisten historian esseissä rekontekstualisoidaan aineistona olevia historiallisia -dokumentteja ja miten dokumentteja selostavat ja niitä tulkitsevat esitykset eroavat toisistaan. Aineistona on 52 lukion kurssikokeen yhteydessä kirjoitettua esseetä, joiden tehtävänanto edellyttää aineistojen hyödyntämistä vastauksen perustelussa. Tutkimuksen teoreettisena ja metodologisena viitekehyksenä ovat systeemis-funktionaalinen kieliteoria ja siihen pohjautuva suhtautumisen teoria. Tutkimuksen analyysiyksikön rajauksessa hyödynnetään projektion käsitettä, ja analyysin kohteeksi on valittu sellaiset projektiot, joi…
