Evidence of nickel ions dimerization in NiWO4 and NiWO4-ZnWO4 solid solutions probed by EXAFS spectroscopy and reverse Monte Carlo simulations

2021

Abstract The existence of exchange-coupled Ni 2 + ions – the so-called magnetic dimers – in wolframite-type NiWO 4 and Zn c Ni 1 − c WO 4 solid solutions with high nickel content was discovered by X-ray absorption spectroscopy combined with reverse Monte Carlo (RMC) simulations. Temperature- (10–300 K) and composition-dependent X-ray absorption spectra were measured at the Ni K-edge, Zn K-edge, and W L 3 -edge of microcrystalline NiWO 4 , Zn c Ni 1 − c WO 4 and ZnWO 4 . Structural models were obtained from simultaneous analysis of the extended X-ray absorption fine structure (EXAFS) spectra at three metal absorption edges using RMC simulations. The obtained radial distribution functions for…

Temperature dependence of the local structure and lattice dynamics of wurtzite-type ZnO

2014

Temperature-dependent (10–300 K) Zn K-edge extended X-ray absorption fine structure (EXAFS) spectra of polycrystalline wurtzitetype ZnO were analyzed using ab initio multiple-scattering theory and taking into account anisotropy of the crystallographic structure and thermal disorder. We employed two different simulation approaches: classical molecular dynamics (MD) and reverse Monte Carlo coupled with an evolutionary algorithm (RMC/EA method). The accuracy of several force-field models, which are commonly used in the MD simulations of bulk and nanostructured ZnO, was tested based on a comparison between the experimental and simulated Zn K-edge EXAFS spectra. It was found that available force…

Characterisation of scheelite LaW0.16Nb0.84O4.08 ion conductor by combined synchrotron techniques: Structure, W oxidation state and interdiffusion

2021

Abstract Scheelite-type materials such as LaNbO4 are increasingly attracting attention as a possible alternative to the most common fluorite and perovskite structure as ion conductors. However, they are much less used and investigated. The introduction of tungsten in lanthanum orthoniobate leads to conduction properties that are compatible with oxygen ion conductivity. In this paper, we studied the effect of the introduction of tungsten in the LaNbO4 structure. High resolution X-ray diffraction showed that in LaNb1-xWxO4+x/2 with x = 0.16 the monoclinic distortion is largely suppressed and the tetragonal phase is predominant at room temperature. By XANES/EXAFS we proved that tungsten is in …

Spin state, electronic structure and bonding on C-scorpionate [Fe(II)Cl2(tpm)] catalyst: An experimental and computational study

2020

Abstract The Fe(II) spin state in the condensed phase of [Fe(II)Cl2(tpm)] (tpm = [tris(pyrazol-1-yl)methane]; 1) catalyst has been determined through a combined experimental and theoretical investigation of X-Ray Absorption Spectroscopy (XAS) at the FeL2,3-edges and NK-edge. Results indicated that in this phase a mixed singlet/triplet state is plausible. These results have been compared with the already know Fe singlet spin state of the same complex in water solution. A detailed analysis of the electronic structure and bonding mechanism of the catalyst showed that the preference for the low-spin diamagnetic ground state, strongly depends upon the ligands, the bulk solvent and the interactio…

Influence of nanoscale order–disorder transitions on the magnetic properties of Heusler compounds for spintronics

2017

Modifications in nanoscale chemical order are used to tune the magnetic properties, namely T-C, of Co2FeSixAl1-x (0 < x < 1). High-angle annular dark field scanning transmission electron microscopy (HAADF-STEM) with Z-contrast reveals nanoscale regions of L2(1) order within a B2 matrix in the off-stoichiometry samples. Perhaps surprisingly, the latter, more chemically disordered structure, exhibits a higher T-C. Upon annealing, the off-stoichiometry samples become more homogeneous with the fraction of L2(1) order decreasing. The short-range order was also investigated using X-ray absorption fine structure (XAFS) measurements at the Co and Fe K edges. Since the local atomic environments of C…

Large atomic disorder in nanostructured LaNi5 alloys: A la L3-edge extended X-ray absorption fine structure study

2010

Abstract Local structure of the nanostructured LaNi 5 alloys, prepared by ball-milling, has been studied using La L 3 -edge extended X-ray absorption fine structure spectroscopy. The near-neighbor distances tend to decrease with the ball-milling, and the mean square relative displacements (MSRD) show substantial increase suggesting an increased atomic disorder. High temperature annealing helps in partial recovery of atomic order in the ball-milled samples for milling times upto 20 h, however, the long-time ball-milled samples seems to gain only a local random order. The results suggest that reduced unit-cell volume together with large atomic-disorder might be causing a higher energy-barrier…

Synyhesis, structure, spectroscopy and redox chemistry of square-planar nickel(II) complexes with tetradentate o-phenylenedioxamidates and related li…

2005

[EN] A series of four-coordinate square-planar nickel(II) complexes of o-phenylenebis(N¿-methyloxamidate) (L1) and related o-phenylene(N¿-methyloxamidate)oxamate (L2) and o-phenylenebis(oxamate) (L3) tetradentate ligands have been synthesized and characterized structurally, spectroscopically and electrochemically. The parent nickel(II)¿L1 complex presents an intense MLCT band in the UV region (¿max = 357 nm) and a distinctive 1 s ¿ 4p CT satellite in the Ni K-edge XANES spectrum (E = 8339.2 eV). These features together with the short Ni¿N(amidate) bond lengths (1.85¿1.93 Å) as revealed by the analysis of the Ni K-edge EXAFS spectrum and confirmed by single-crystal X-ray diffraction are typi…

Theory of CaL2,3-edge XAS using a novel multichannel multiple-scattering method

2003

A new method for calculating X-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS) at the L2,3 edges of Ca and transition metals is presented. It is based on the multichannel multiple-scattering theory by Natoli et al. [Phys. Rev. B, (1990), 42, 1944-1968] combined with the eigen-channel R-matrix formalism. Atomic multiplet-like effects, owing to the Coulomb interaction of photoelectrons and the 2p hole, are taken into account through a configuration interaction ansatz for the final-state wavefunction. The various multiplet states lead to a set of channels for the photoelectron wavefunction, which is calculated in multiple-scattering theory. The method is applied to Ca, an important element for biological ap…
