3D spectral imaging with synchrotron Fourier transform infrared spectro-microtomography

2013

We report Fourier transform infrared spectro-microtomography, a nondestructive three-dimensional imaging approach that reveals the distribution of distinctive chemical compositions throughout an intact biological or materials sample. The method combines mid-infrared absorption contrast with computed tomographic data acquisition and reconstruction to enhance chemical and morphological localization by determining a complete infrared spectrum for every voxel (millions of spectra determined per sample).

ChemInform Abstract: Coupled Semiconductor Systems for Photocatalysis. Preparation and Characterization of Polycrystalline Mixed WO3/WS2 Powders.

2010

Mixed WO3/WS2 powders were prepared by oxidation of WS2. The physical properties of the samples were characterized by X-ray diffraction, diffuse reflectance spectroscopy, and scanning electron microscopy; they were strongly dependent upon the time and temperature of oxidation. The chemical state and the elemental distribution of the sample surface were investigated by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. The photocatalytic results have showed that the aqueous suspensions of the mixed WO3/WS2 systems have significantly higher activities than pure WS2 and WO3 for the photodegradation of phenol. The enhanced performance can be related to the presence of heterojunctions WO3/WS2 on the single parti…

From Spherical Mesopores to Worm-Shaped Mesopores : Morphology Transition in Titania–Polystyrene-b-poly(ethylene oxide) Composite Films with Increasi…

2013

A morphology transition from spherical mesopores to worm-shaped mesopores within titania block copolymer composite thin films has been observed by varying the sol–gel reaction time from 40 min to 48 h in the four-component templating system of polystyrene-$\mathit{b}$-poly(ethylene oxide) (PS-$\mathit{b}$-PEO), 1,4-dioxane, concentrated HCl, and titanium tetraisopropoxide (TTIP) with a PS-$\mathit{b}$-PEO mass concentration of 0.25 wt.-%. The impact of the sol–gel reaction time on the local structure, long-range lateral structure, and vertical structure of the as-prepared, calcined, and UV-degraded thin films as well as the structural changes in solution have been systematically investigate…

Green synthesis of Pd@graphene nanocomposite: Catalyst for the selective oxidation of alcohols

2016

Abstract Due to their excellent physicochemical properties and synergistic effect, graphene metallic NPs based nanocomposites have gained significant attention in various technological fields including catalysis. Here we demonstrate a single pot, facile and environmental friendly synthesis of catalytically active palladium(Pd)@graphene nanocomposites (SP-HRG-Pd) by the simultaneous reduction of graphene oxide (GRO) and PdCl 2 using Salvadora persica L. (miswak) root extract (RE) as bioreductant. The synthesis of SP-HRG-Pd was confirmed by various spectroscopic and microscopic techniques, including ultraviolet–visible (UV–vis), Fourier-transform infrared (FT-IR), Raman and X-ray photoelectro…

Conservation Work on an Ancient Sicilian Processional Banner: Preliminary Analyses and in Situ Restoration

2013

Abstract Before carrying out the conservation work on the gilded wooden frame of the processional banner coming from Tusa, Sicily, some preliminary diagnostic analyses were conducted in order to identify materials that made up the wooden frame. After a micro-sampling phase, a thin section of the wooden support allowed to identify the timber as linden wood (basswood). The X-Ray Fluorescence analysis confirmed the presence of a thin layer of primer made of plaster and animal glue covered with a red bolus primer, used for the gilding process. The restoration was carried out during the opening hours of the museum, allowing visitors to be informed on the restoration phases.

Stereoselective syntheses of piperidinones and their modification by organometallic coupling reactions

2007

Dehydropiperidinones stereoselectively obtained from N-arabinosyl imines were iodinated at the enaminone structure. Knochel iodine-magnesium exchange afforded Grignard compounds of these piperidinone derivatives which reacted, either directly or after transmetalation to zinc or copper intermediates, with alkyl-, aryl- or acylhalides to give correspondingly substituted piperidinones. Stereoselective conjugate allyl cuprate addition to a thus obtained 5-allyl dehydropiperidinone and ring-closing metathesis of the product gave a hydroquinolinone containing three stereogenic centers.

Structural characterization of iron oxide/hydroxide nanoparticles in nine different parenteral drugs for the treatment of iron deficiency anaemia by …

2013

Drug products containing iron oxide and hydroxide nanoparticles (INPs) are important for the treatment of iron deficiency anaemia. Pharmaceuticals prepared by the complexation of different kinds of INPs and carbohydrates have different physicochemical and biopharmaceutic characteristics. The increasing number of parenteral non-biological complex drugs (NBCD) containing iron requires physicochemical methods for characterization and enabling of cross comparisons. In this context the structure and the level of crystallinity of the iron phases may be connected to the in vitro and in vivo dissolution rates, which etiologically determine the therapeutic and toxic effects. Quantitative phase analysis and thickness measurement of surface-oxide layers in metal and alloy powders by the chemical-granular method

1998

The principles of the chemical-granular analysis of metal and alloy powders are reviewed and the results are compared with those provided by the spectroscopic analytical techniques XPS, AES and SIMS, including ion etching in their depth-profiling mode, when they are applied to the same materials. Several examples are analysed and it is shown that the chemical-granular method alone can provide the very same information as depth profiling. However, it is averaged over a macroscopic powder sample in contrast to one or a few single particles. Nevertheless, it is the combination of the chemical-granular and depth-profiling analyses that really provides an unparalleled description in quantitative…

Characterization of Pumice-Supported Ag–Pd and Cu–Pd Bimetallic Catalysts by X-Ray Photoelectron Spectroscopy and X-Ray Diffraction

1999

Bimetallic Ag–Pd and Cu–Pd catalysts supported on pumice have been prepared in order to be used in the selective hydrogenation of dienes. The catalysts were obtained by the classical impregnation method and in the case of the Cu–Pd system also by organometallic precursors. They were analysed by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and X-ray diffraction (XRD). XPS allowed us to determine the surface distribution and chemical state of the two elements; XRD yielded the lattice parameters and allowed us to establish the possible formation of alloys. The two bimetallic systems behave differently. In the case of the Ag-Pd catalysts, Pd particles covered by silver atoms along with highly dispers…
