Music style not only modulates the auditory cortex, but also motor related areas

2021

The neuroscience of music has recently attracted significant attention, but the effect of music style on the activation of auditory-motor regions has not been explored. The aim of the present study is to analyze the differences in brain activity during passive listening to non-vocal excerpts of four different music genres (classical, reggaeton, electronic and folk). A functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) experiment was performed. Twenty-eight participants with no musical training were included in the study. They had to passively listen to music excerpts of the above genres during fMRI acquisition. Imaging analysis was performed at the whole-brain-level and in auditory-motor regions …

Development of the Angioedema Control Test—A patient‐reported outcome measure that assesses disease control in patients with recurrent angioedema

2019

Background Recurrent angioedema (AE) is an important clinical problem in the context of chronic urticaria (mast cell mediator-induced), ACE-inhibitor intake and hereditary angioedema (both bradykinin-mediated). To help patients obtain control of their recurrent AE is a major treatment goal. However, a tool to assess control of recurrent AE is not yet available. This prompted us to develop such a tool, the Angioedema Control Test (AECT). Methods After a conceptional framework was developed for the AECT, a list of potential AECT items was generated by a combined approach of patient interviews, literature review and expert input. Subsequent item reduction was based on impact analysis, inter-it…

Measurement of Bradykinin Formation and Degradation in Blood Plasma: Relevance for Acquired Angioedema Associated With Angiotensin Converting Enzyme …

2020

Bradykinin (BK)-mediated angioedema (AE) states are rare acquired or hereditary conditions involving localized edema of the subcutaneous and submucosal tissues. Citrated plasma from healthy volunteers or patients with hereditary angioedema (HAE) with normal level of C1-inhibitor (C1-INH) was used to investigate pathways of BK formation and breakdown relevant to AE physiopathology. The half-life of BK (100 nM) added to normal plasma was 34 s, a value that was increased ~12-fold when the angiotensin converting enzyme (ACE) inhibitor enalaprilat (130 nM) was added (enzyme immunoassay measurements). The BK half-life was similarly increased ~5-fold following 2 daily oral doses of enalapril malea…

Deficiency of plasminogen activator inhibitor 2 in plasma of patients with hereditary angioedema with normal C1 inhibitor levels

2016

Background Hereditary angioedema with normal C1 inhibitor levels (HAE-N) is associated with a Factor XII mutation in 30% of subjects; however, the role of this mutation in the pathogenesis of angioedema is unclear. Objective We sought evidence of abnormalities in the pathways of bradykinin formation and bradykinin degradation in the plasma of patients with HAE-N both with and without the mutation. Methods Bradykinin was added to plasma, and its rate of degradation was measured by using ELISA. Plasma autoactivation was assessed by using a chromogenic assay of kallikrein formation. Plasminogen activator inhibitors (PAIs) 1 and 2 were also measured by means of ELISA. Results PAI-1 levels varie…

Native arbuscular mycorrhizal symbiosis alters foliar bacterial community composition.

2017

The effects of arbuscular mycorrhizal (AM) fungi on plant-associated microbes are poorly known. We tested the hypothesis that colonization by an AM fungus affects microbial species richness and microbial community composition of host plant tissues. We grew the grass, Deschampsia flexuosa in a greenhouse with or without the native AM fungus, Claroideoglomus etunicatum. We divided clonally produced tillers into two parts: one inoculated with AM fungus spores and one without AM fungus inoculation (non-mycorrhizal, NM). We characterized bacterial (16S rRNA gene) and fungal communities (internal transcribed spacer region) in surface-sterilized leaf and root plant compartments. AM fungus inoculat…

Changing Behavior : A Theory- and Evidence-Based Approach

2020

Social problems in many domains, including health, education, social relationships, and the workplace, have their origins in human behavior. The documented links between behavior and social problems have sparked interest in governments and organizations to develop effective interventions to promote behavior change. The Handbook of Behavior Change provides comprehensive coverage of contemporary theory, research, and practice on behavior change. The handbook incorporates theory- and evidence-based approaches to behavior change with chapters from leading theorists, researchers, and practitioners from multiple disciplines, including psychology, sociology, behavioral science, economics, and impl…

Narratives of Burnout and Recovery from an Agency Perspective : A Two-Year Longitudinal Study

2017

Abstract Purpose To provide knowledge about the recovery process during rehabilitation and two years later by exploring the manifestation of agency and spheres of meaning in the narratives of participants in a national rehabilitation course. Material and methods The subjects of the study were four participants in a national rehabilitation course, whose burnout levels had decreased between the initial and follow-up periods of the course. Semi-structured interviews on two occasions and an electronic questionnaire 1.5 years post rehabilitation comprised the main material. In addition, the BBI -15 (Bergen Burnout Indicator) and DEPS-screen were used. Results Thematic narrative analysis revealed…

Validity and reliability of the motivation for physical activity (RM4-FM) questionnaire

2021

There is a lack of validated instruments measuring motivation for physical activity (RM4-FM) in the Finnish language. The study examined the translated RM4-FM instrument’s psychometric properties in a sample of healthy, older Finnish adults. RM4-FM was translated and linguistically validated adhering to published guidelines. 65–75-year olds (n=102), completed the RM4-FM, the physical activity acceptance questionnaire (PAAQ) and sociodemographic characteristics questionnaires electronically. The RM4-FM was readministered one month after the initial assessment. RM4-FM translated well into Finnish. Motivation dimension scores were skewed towards high internal and low external motivation. A flo…

Effects of a home-based rehabilitation program in community-dwelling older people after discharge from hospital: A subgroup analysis of a randomized …

2021

Objective: To examine whether pre-admission community mobility explains the effects of a rehabilitation program on physical performance and activity in older adults recently discharged from hospital. Design: A secondary analysis of a randomized controlled trial. Setting: Home and community. Participants: Community-dwelling adults aged ⩾60 years recovering from a lower limb or back injury, surgery or other disorder who were randomized to a rehabilitation ( n = 59) or standard care control ( n = 58) group. They were further classified into subgroups that were not planned a priori: (1) mild, (2) moderate, or (3) severe pre-admission restrictions in community mobility. Interventions: The 6-mont…

Physiotherapists’ conceptions of movement awareness– A phenomenographic study

2021

The phenomenon of movement awareness requires more attention to make it explicit in physiotherapy. The aim of this study was to explore the variation in physiotherapists’ conceptions of movement quality, focusing on movement awareness. The informants were 15 physiotherapists from a variety of physiotherapy fields. We collected data through two group interviews and used the phenomenographic method to analyze them. Four themes emerged from the data: 1) Being in contact with one’s own moving body; 2) Increased awareness of movement experiences; 3) Interrelationship between physiotherapist and patient; and 4) Better understanding of movement awareness. These themes varied by four descriptive ca…
