Treatment of columnaris disease of rainbow trout: low pH and salt as possible tools?
2005
The impact of salt and low pH on columnaris disease of fish was studied. Survival of Flavobacterium columnare after exposure to either 4% NaCl (pH 7.2) or pH 5.0, pH 4.86 or pH 4.6 for 15 min or 1 h was studied in vitro. All conditions significantly reduced the numbers of viable bacterial cells. The effects of salt (4 and 2%) and acidic baths (pH 4.6) were studied in 2 experiments in vivo with rainbow trout Oncorhynchus mykiss infected with F. columnare. Both salt and acidic baths failed to prevent fish mortality; the overall mortality reached 100% in all groups. However, according to survival analysis, the mortality rate was lower in fish treated with 4% salt baths compared to a control gr…

The authenticity of ‘authentic’ assessment some faculty perceptions
2017
The attempt to embed Authenticity within the learning process in higher education has been a driving principle within many pedagogical approaches to Higher Education developed over the past three decades. The desire to allow students to learn in a manner that closely resembles the way in which expertise is developed outside the academic environment is a central element of problem-based, inquiry-based and projectbased learning. Exploring the implications of authenticity for student achievement and the ways in which this should be assessed has led to innovative teaching methods and ways of evaluating student performance. Unfortunately, authenticity, and authentic assessment in particular, are…
The Fourth Industrial Revolution and Changes to Working Life : What Supports Adult Employees in Adapting to New Technology at Work?
2020
AbstractThis chapter aims to increase current understanding of adults’ individual learning pathways and needs when adapting to new technology. We review adults’ overall technology skills and depict, through chosen examples, how adults have adapted to technological change in their working lives. We present prior research on the challenges that the Fourth Industrial Revolution poses to adults’ further education, and based on the Programme for the International Assessment of Adult Competencies (PIAAC), we review adults’ problem-solving skills in technology-rich environments. Overall, the findings emphasize the importance of design-based education and the need for companies to flexibly address …
The Role of the Internet in Overcoming Information Barriers: Implications for Exporting SMEs of the East African Community
2012
Small and medium-sized enterprises play a significant role in the East African Community, contributing highly to the national income and employing a significant number of people. Exportation provides a great opportunity for these enterprises to expand their businesses and improve their performance. However, they encounter a number of information- related barriers before and during exportation. Based on literature, this paper identifies these barriers and discusses how the internet could be used to reduce them. Based on the internet, international business and small business literature, the paper provides propositions and develops a model that will be useful for future studies in this area.
Structural features of the human bradykinin B2 receptor probed by agonists, antagonists, and anti-idiotypic antibodies
1993
The human bradykinin B2 receptor belongs to the family of G-protein-coupled receptors. To characterize the receptor protein, we have solubilized the membranes of cultured human foreskin fibroblasts bearing the B2 receptor. Affinity cross-linking of the solubilized receptor with the labeled agonist, 125I-Tyr0-bradykinin, or the labeled antagonist, 125I-(4-hydroxy-phenyl-propionyl)-HOE140, revealed major bands of apparent molecular mass of 69 kDa in SDS-polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis under reducing conditions, and of 59 kDa under non-reducing conditions. A 1000-fold molar excess of each of the unlabeled ligands quenched the specific labeling suggesting that the agonist and the antagonist …
A tale of three seasons: a cultural sport psychology and gender performativity approach to practitioner identity and development in professional foot…

Traditional ethnographic data collection methods were employed, including, field notes and a reflective journal. Through creative non-fiction vignettes, we show that the traditional masculine discourse in professional football shaped the firs…
