The electronic structure of zircon-type orthovanadates: Effects of high-pressure and cation substitution
2012
The electronic structure of four ternary-metal oxides containing isolated vanadate ions is studied. Zircon-type YVO4, YbVO4, LuVO4, and NdVO4 are investigated by high-pressure optical-absorption measurements up to 20 GPa. First-principles calculations based on density-functional theory were also performed to analyze the electronic band structure as a function of pressure. The electronic structure near the Fermi level originates largely from molecular orbitals of the vanadate ion, but cation substitution influence these electronic states. The studied ortovanadates, with the exception of NdVO4, undergo a zircon-scheelite structural phase transition that causes a collapse of the band-gap energ…
From the solution processing of hydrophilic molecules to polymer-phthalocyanine hybrid materials for ammonia sensing in high humidity atmospheres.
2014
We have prepared different hybrid polymer-phthalocyanine materials by solution processing, starting from two sulfonated phthalocyanines, s-CoPc and CuTsPc, and polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP), polyethylene glycol (PEG), poly(acrylic acid-co-acrylamide) (PAA-AM), poly(diallyldimethylammonium chloride) (PDDA) and polyaniline (PANI) as polymers. We also studied the response to ammonia (NH3) of resistors prepared from these sensing materials. The solvent casted films, prepared from s-CoPc and PVP, PEG and PAA-AM, were highly insulating and very sensitive to the relative humidity (RH) variation. The incorporation of s-CoPc in PDDA by means of layer-by-layer (LBL) technique allowed to stabilize the fi…
Influence of small amounts of polyvinylchloride on the recycling of polyethyleneterephthalate
1999
Abstract Polyethylene terephthalate (PET), and polyvinyl chloride (PVC), are commonly encountered in plastics stream coming from separate collections of plastic bottles. The presence of PVC in the recycled PET is very dangerous because of the chain scission provoked by the hydrogen chloride evolved from the macromolecules during degradation of PVC. Recycled PET must be free of PVC; contents of PVC as little as 100 ppm can induce degradation and discoloration of the polyester. PET, in its turn, is degraded when the processing is carried out in the presence of water. In previous work, however, the degradation of PET was eliminated and rather an increase of the molecular weight has been measur…
Self assembled hydrophobic nanoclusters of poly(methyl methacrylate) embedded into polyvinyl alcohol based hydrophilic matrix: Preparation and water …
2009
Hydrophilic matrices containing nanosized clusters of hydrophilic moieties have demonstrated potential applications in biomedical field. A novel hydrogel containing nanosized domains (20–35 nm) of hydrophobic moieties of poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) was prepared by grafting crosslinked poly(acrylic acid-co-methyl methacrylate) chains onto polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) backbone using an efficient redox system. The graft copolymerization process was investigated to observe the influence of gel components on the kinetic parameters of grafting such as rate of grafting (Rg), grafting yield (Gy) and grafting efficiency (Ge). The prepared graft nanohydrogel was evaluated for its water sorption poten…
Smart hydrogels for novel optical functions
2007
Nanocomposites of inherently conductive polyaniline (PANT) within a highly hydrophilic polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) based hydrogel have been produced by coupling a conventional dispersion chemical oxidative polymerization to a subsequent high energy irradiation step, in order to convert the polymer stabilizing the aqueous dispersion, namely the PVA, into a highly water swollen hydrogel incorporating the PANT particles. The incorporation of the electroactive and "pH-sensitive" polymer into a transparent and highly permeable hydrogel matrix has been pursued as a route to the development of a novel class of potentially biocompatible, smart hydrogels that can respond to changes of the surrounding en…
Preparation and Characterization of Composites Materials with Rubber Matrix and with Polyvinyl Chloride Addition (PVC)
2020
An important problem that arises at present refers to the increase in performances in the exploitation of the conveyor belts. Additionally, it is pursued to use some materials, which can be obtained by recycling rubber and PVC waste, in their structure. Thus, the research aimed at creating conveyor belts using materials obtained from the recycling of rubber and PVC waste. Under these conditions, conveyor belts were made that had in their structure two types of rubber and PVC, which was obtained by adding in certain proportions of reclaimed rubber and powder obtained from grinding rubber waste. In order to study the effect of adding PVC on properties, four types of conveyor belts were made, …
Influence of Polyvinyl Alcohol (PVA) on PVA-Poly-N-hydroxyethyl-aspartamide (PVA-PHEA) Microcrystalline Solid Dispersion Films
2020
AbstractThis study was conducted to formulate buccal films consisting of polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) and poly-N-hydroxyethyl-aspartamide (PHEA), to improve the dissolution of the drug through the oral mucosa. Ibuprofen sodium salt was used as a model drug, and the buccal film was expected to enhance its dissolution rate. Two different concentrations of PVA (5% w/v and 7.5% w/v) were used. Solvent casting was used to prepare films, where a solution consisting of drug and polymer was cast and allowed to dry. Attenuated total reflection Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (ATR-FTIR), differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) were used to investigate the pr…
An asymmetric electrospun membrane for the controlled release of ciprofloxacin and FGF-2: Evaluation of antimicrobial and chemoattractant properties.
2021
Here, an asymmetric double-layer membrane has been designed and fabricated by electrospinning as a tool for a potential wound healing application. A hydrophobic layer has been produced by using a polyurethane-polycaprolactone (PU-PCL) copolymer and loaded with the antibacterial ciprofloxacin whereas an ion responsive hydrophilic layer has been produced by using an octyl derivative of gellan gum (GG-C8) and polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) and loaded with the growth factor FGF-2. This study investigated how the properties of this asymmetric membrane loaded with actives, were influenced by the ionotropic crosslinking of the hydrophilic layer. In particular, the treatment in DPBS and the crosslinking i…
Morphological Control of Hydrothermal Ni(OH)2 in the Presence of Polymers and Surfactants: Nanocrystals, Mesocrystals, and Superstructures
2008
International audience; Polymers with different hydrophilic groups [polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP), ammonium polyacrylate (APA), and hydroxypropylmethyl cellulose (HPMC)] and surfactants [cetyltrimethylammonium bromide (CTAB) and sodium dodecylbenzensulfonate (SDBS)] were used as additives to modify the crystallization of β-Ni(OH)2 in hydrothermal conditions. Marked morphological changes in the β-Ni(OH)2 particles were observed depending on the additive concentration and on the duration of the hydrothermal treatment. The final morphology is the result of a complex, time-dependent self-assembly and growth process. Well-defined particles with sizes from submicrometer range to a few micrometers co…
Stable n-type thermoelectric multilayer thin films with high power factor from carbonaceous nanofillers
2016
Abstract High power factor n-type organic thermoelectric nanocomposites are assembled by alternately depositing double walled-nanotubes (DWNT), stabilized by polyethyleneimine (PEI), and graphene stabilized by polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP), from water using the layer-by-layer (LbL) assembly technique. This unique combination of carbon nanomaterials exhibits an electrical conductivity of 300 S cm−1 and a relatively stable power factor of 190 μW m−1 K−2 at room temperature.
