Choice between alternative investments in agriculture: The role of organic farming to avoid the abandonment of rural areas

Abstract Sicily has a long tradition in citrus fruit cultivation that, with vineyard and olive tree, represents the main Mediterranean tree crops. Since many Sicilian farmers in recent years have decided to abandon conventional lemon orchards, in this paper we have evaluated the financial sustainability of organic lemon production by comparing it with the conventional one. Financial analysis has been carried out in a case study on the northwestern coast of Sicily, considering a 50-year economic life of an orchard. Indigenous yeast communities in the environment of ‘‘Rovello bianco’’ grape variety and their use in commercial white wine fermentation

The indigenous yeast communities associated with several vineyard habitats were analysed. Wild yeasts were isolated, differentiated at strain level and identified. A phylogenetic tree based on partial 26S rRNA genes was constructed. The strains were characterized and the indigenous Saccharomyces cerevisiae GR1 was then used to carry out a vinification process and compared with a commercial yeast. Wines obtained were subjected to chemical and sensory analysis. The comparison between the two products highlighted differences due to the fer- menting strains employed. Genetic location and biochemical characterization of eye-colour mutants from natural populations of Drosophila melanogaster

From six captures of Drosophila melanogaster carried out in three different habitats (cellar, vineyard, and pinewood) in two different seasons of the year (spring and autumn), 60 eye-colour mutations were isolated, which were reduced to 29 loci by means of allelism tests within and between populations. Forty-five of these mutations were analyzed genetically and biochemically; of these 33 turned out to be previously described mutants and mapped to a total of 17 loci. Twelve new mutants were discovered and they mapped to 12 new loci, distributed on chromosomes X, II, and III. The eye-colour mutants show large effects on the red and brown pigments. This study aimed to explore the main characteristics of schoolyards in six Nordic–Baltic countries, to document how those facilities provide affordances for PA in 7–18 year–old schoolchildren, and how the schoolyard meets children’s preferences. One schoolyard was studied in each included country: Iceland, Norway, Finland, Lithuania, Latvia, and Estonia. Due to anthropic pressure, many areas of the world are affected by a process of soil “entisolization” that leads to the formation of “anthropogenic soils”. In order to investigate Man's role in soil evolution, a survey was carried out in Southeastern Sicily (Italy), where, for years, there have been wide farming areas with anthropogenic soils. A chronosequence of anthropogenic soils in a vineyard area, cultivated for 22 years, was investigated.
