Questions: Species–area relationships (SARs) are fundamental for understanding biodiversity patterns and are generally well described by a power law with a constant exponent z. QUESTIONS: Which environmental factors influence fine-grain beta diversity of vegetation and do they vary among taxonomic groups? LOCATION: Palaearctic biogeographic realm. METHODS: We extracted 4,654 nested-plot series with at least four different grain sizes between 0.0001 m² and 1,024 m² from the GrassPlot database, covering a wide range of different grassland and other open habitat types. Kinetics of Ascorbic Acid Degradation in Green Asparagus during Heat Processing

The effect of heating on ascorbic acid in green asparagus during a simulated retort operation was investigated. The asparagus was heated in trays of ethylene-vinyl alcohol copolymer for selected time intervals at four temperatures ranging from 110 to 125 degrees C. It was found that the rate of degradation followed first-order kinetics. Kinetic parameters were obtained by using two least squares methods. The activation energy and z value were 35 kcal/mol and 20 degrees C, respectively.
Degradation of carotenoids in orange juice during microwave heating

Degradation of carotenoids in orange juice was monitored during microwave (MW) heating at different time/temperature conditions. Various carotenoids were identified and quantified by HPLC. Degradation rate of carotenoids was influenced by MW heating temperatures: at 60 degrees C and 70 degrees C for 10 min violaxanthin and antheraxanthin were the compounds most unstable, while lutein and provitamin A carotenoids were more stable. At 85 degrees C a decrease of about 50% was observed for almost all carotenoids after 1 min of MW heating. Effect of heat activation and inactivation conditions on germination and thermal resistance parameters of Bacillus cereus spores.

The effect of isothermal and non-isothermal heat activation on germination and thermoresistance of two strains of Bacillus cereus spores was studied. Results indicated that the germination after isothermal activation was lower than after non-isothermal heating. The activation rate affected the z value, which increased with faster heating rates. For each temperature and inactivation rate, the non-isothermal activation at rate of 2 degrees C/min resulted in larger D values (D90 = 4.70 min) than isothermal activation (D90 = 4.04 min). Thermal inactivation kinetics of Bacillus stearothermophilus spores using a linear temperature program.

A systematic study of the inactivation kinetics of Bacillus stearothermophilus spores was carried out in nonisothermic heating conditions using a linear temperature increase program and analyzing the experimental data by means of a one-step nonlinear regression. The D and z values estimated are close to those obtained in isothermic conditions and estimated by using a two-step model, first D values are calculated, and then in the second step a z value is deduced (D(121 degrees C) = 3.08 and 4.38 min, respectively, and z = 7 and 7.9 degrees C, respectively).
