Ancient cattle genomics, origins, and rapid turnover in the Fertile Crescent
2019
Cattle were domesticated ∼10,000 years ago, but analysis of modern breeds has not elucidated their origins. Verdugo et al. performed genome-wide analysis of 67 ancient Near Eastern Bos taurus DNA samples. Several populations of ancient aurochs were progenitors of domestic cows. These genetic lineages mixed ∼4000 years ago in a region around the Indus Valley. Interestingly, mitochondrial analysis indicated that genetic material likely derived from arid-adapted Bos indicus (zebu) bulls was introduced by introgression.Science, this issue p. 173Genome-wide analysis of 67 ancient Near Eastern cattle, Bos taurus, remains reveals regional variation that has since been obscured by admixture in mode…
Molecular Mechanism of Inhibition of DNA Methylation by Zebularine
2017
In this work, we have analyzed the molecular mechanism of inhibition of a C5-DNA methyltransferase by zebularine using classical and QM/MM simulations. We found that the reaction proceeds with the addition of an unprotonated cysteine to the C6 position of the ring followed by methyl transfer to the C5 position. However, while the first step is reversible and presents a moderate free-energy barrier, the second step presents a large free-energy barrier, preventing the formation of the methylated complex. This mechanistic proposal agrees with recent experimental observations that point to the formation of a reversible covalent complex between DNA containing zebularine and methyltransferases. T…

Ks. Konstantego Damrota opowieść o polskim Pomorzu (na podstawie Szkiców z ziemi i historyi Prus Królewskich z 1886 r.)
2022
Ecological, morphological and genetic characterization of sympatric Haemonchus spp. parasites of domestic ruminants in Mauritania
1995
SUMMARYThe 4 species of ruminants (dromedary, zebu cattle, sheep and goat) in arid areas of Mauritania harboured Haemonchus spp. as the most frequent internal parasite. This was a rare situation where the 3 putative species, H. longistipes (dromedary), H. placet (zebu cattle) and H. contortus (sheep and goat) occurred sympatrically. The study was undertaken on hosts slaughtered at the Nouakchott abattoir, on the basis of monthly collection of worms. The environment was very unfavourable to H. placei and unfavourable to H. contortus, as intensity of infection remained low throughout the year, whereas infection in the dromedary was 10 to 20-fold higher. The survival strategies during the long…
