Determination of spin, magnetic moment and isotopic shift of neutron rich205Hg by optical pumping
1975
Neutron rich205Hg (T 1/2=5.2 min) was produced and on-line mass separated at the ISOLDE facility at CERN. The polarization achieved by optical pumping via the atomic line (6s 21 S 0↔6s6p 3 P 1,λ=2 537A) was monitored by theβ decay asymmetry. Hyperfine structure and isotopic shift of the205Hg absorption line was determined by Zeeman scanning. In addition a magnetic resonance was performed on the polarized205Hg nuclei in the atomic ground state. The results are: $$I(^{205} Hg) = \tfrac{1}{2}$$ (confirmed);μ I (205Hg)=0.5915 (1)μ N (uncorrected for diamagnetism); isotopic shiftδv204/205=v(205Hg)-v(204Hg)=−1.8 (1) GHz.μ I and IS are discussed briefly in the frame of current literature.
Determination of the isotope shift of115m Cd by a Zeeman scanning method
1975
We have used an optical pumping-Zeeman scanning technique in order to determine the isotope shift in the 3,261 A resonance line of 43-day, spin-11/2115mCd. A sample of ≈5×1012 atoms was aligned in the1S0 diamagnetic ground state by optically pumping the sample with one selected Zeeman-scanned component of the3P1−3,261 A resonance line from a114Cd lamp. The alignment was detected through the modulation of the pumping beam at the nuclear resonance frequency. Thus by Zeeman scanning theF = 9/2 component of the3P1 level and using previously determinedA- andB-values, we findδ5v(114–115m (9/2))= −4,234(48) MHz and114Cd-115mCd isotope shift = 87(48) MHz. We calculate a staggering parameterγ(115mCd…
Strongly correlated states of trapped ultracold fermions in deformed Landau levels
2015
We analyze the strongly correlated regime of a two-component trapped ultracold fermionic gas in a synthetic non-Abelian U(2) gauge potential, that consists of both a magnetic field and a homogeneous spin-orbit coupling. This gauge potential deforms the Landau levels (LLs) with respect to the Abelian case and exchanges their ordering as a function of the spin-orbit coupling. In view of experimental realizations, we show that a harmonic potential combined with a Zeeman term, gives rise to an angular momentum term, which can be used to test the stability of the correlated states obtained through interactions. We derive the Haldane pseudopotentials (HPs) describing the interspecies contact inte…
Coherent collisional spin dynamics in optical lattices
2005
We report on the observation of coherent, purely collisionally driven spin dynamics of neutral atoms in an optical lattice. For high lattice depths, atom pairs confined to the same lattice site show weakly damped Rabi-type oscillations between two-particle Zeeman states of equal magnetization, induced by spin changing collisions. This paves the way towards the efficient creation of robust entangled atom pairs in an optical lattice. Moreover, measurement of the oscillation frequency allows for precise determination of the spin-changing collisional coupling strengths, which are directly related to fundamental scattering lengths describing interatomic collisions at ultracold temperatures.
Nonlinear magneto-optical resonances for systems withJ∼100observed in K2molecules
2012
We present the results of an experimental as well as a theoretical study of nonlinear magneto-optical resonances in diatomic potassium molecules in the electronic ground state with large values of the angular momentum quantum number $J\ensuremath{\sim}100$. At zero magnetic field, the absorption transitions are suppressed because of population trapping in the ground state due to Zeeman coherences between magnetic sublevels of this state along with depopulation pumping. The destruction of such coherences in an external magnetic field was used to study the resonances in this work. K${}_{2}$ molecules were formed in a glass cell filled with potassium metal at a temperature above 150 ${}^{\ensu…
Spectroscopy of excited state positronium
1994
Electric dipole transitions in the microwave range have been induced between the fine-structure levels of positronium in the excited staten=2. As an indication of the transitions, we used the increase in Lyman-α radiation when the metastable 23S1-level is depopulated. The results for the transitions 23S1→23P0,1,2 areΝ 0=18499.65±1.20±4.00 MHz,Ν 1=13012.42 ±0.65±1.54 MHz andΝ 2=8624.38±0.54±1.40 MHz. The first error is statistical and the second systematic. The precision of the present measurement has improved by a factor of 3, compared to previous data. Recent bound state QED-calculations have been extended to the orderR t8 α 4lnα −1. The not yet completely calculated orderR t8 α 4 is estim…
Nuclear Radiation Detected Optical Pumping of neutron-deficient Hg isotopes
1976
The extension of the Nuclear Radiation Detected Optical Pumping method to mass-separated samples of isotopes far off stability is presented for a series of light Hg isotopes produced at the ISOLDE facility at CERN. The isotope under investigation is transferred by an automatic transfer system into the optical pumping apparatus. Zeeman scanning of an isotopically pure Hg spectral lamp is used to reach energetic coincidence with the hyperfine structure components of the 6s 2 1 S 06s6p 3P1,λ=2,537 A resonance line of the investigated isotope and the Hg lamp. The orientation built up by optical pumping is monitored via the asymmetry or anisotropy of the nuclear radiation. Nuclear spins, magneti…
Hydrogen maser frequency shifts due to coherently excited Δm F =±1 transitions betweenF=1 levels of the atomic hydrogen ground state
1968
Hydrogen maser frequency shifts, caused by the multiple quantum transition nonlinearities of a resonant multiple frequency excitation of the atomic hydrogen four level ground state system have been investigated. The oscillation characteristics of hydrogen maser operation with simultaneously excited, low frequencyΔm F =±1 transitions between theF=1 states of the atomic hydrogen ground state have been analysed theoretically and explicit formulas for hydrogen maser frequency shifts and amplitude response have been derived for arbitrary maser oscillation amplitude and a small signal approximation for theΔm F =±1 “Zeeman” transitions. The comparison with experimentally observed hydrogen maser fr…
Spin and magnetic moment of25Na by ?-radiation detected optical pumping
1975
25Na (T1/2 = 60 sec) has been produced in a22Ne target by the (α,p) reaction and polarized by means of spin-exchange scattering with optically pumped87Rb. The asymmetry in the β decay of polarized nuclei served to detect rf transitions between hfs Zeeman levels of the atomic ground state, yielding spinI = 5/2 and hyperfine splitting ΔW= 2648.5(3.0) MHz, from which the magnetic moment μI = 3.683(4)nm (corrected for diamagnetism) was deduced.
Magnetic excitations and phase transition of CsFeBr3 in an external magnetic field
1990
In CSFeBr3 the Fe2+ ion with effective spin one has locally a singlet ground state (m=0). The antiferromagnetic interactions between neighbouring Fe-ions are too weak as compared with the anisotropy constant to introduce long range order in the absence of an external field. By inelastic neutron scattering we studied the magnetic excitations in an external magnetic field up to 5 Tesla applied along thec-axis. A linear Zeeman splitting was observed with a Lande factorg=2.4. The field renormalizes the dispersion curves in such a way that the exchange interaction has decreasing influence with increasing field. Theoretical calculations according to the excitonic model of Lindgard describe the ex…
