Analysis of linear alkylbenzene samples with a camera-based equipment
2017
Nestemäisiä tuikeaineita hyödyntävät ilmaisimet ovat saaneet jalansijaa neutriinofysiikassa viime vuosikymmeninä. Perinteisiin Cherenkovin ilmaisimiin niiden etu on suurempi hiukkasten vuorovaikutuksesta aiheutuvan valon tuotto. Lisäksi edullisten, suhteellisen ympäristöystävällisten ja optisesti kirkkaiden tuikeaineyhdisteiden (bentseenin alkyylijohdannaiset) saatavuus mahdollistaa yhä suurempien ilmaisimien rakennuksen. Nestemäisten tuikeaineiden ongelmana on kuitenkin niiden taipumus kerätä epäpuhtauksia itseensä ja niiden muutosalttius UV-säteilyn ja korkeiden lämpötilojen vaikutuksesta. Muutokset heikentävät tuikeaineiden valon tuottoa, ja siksi nestemäisten tuikeaineiden puhdistusta j…
2-Triazenoazaindoles: Α novel class of triazenes inducing transcriptional down-regulation of EGFR and HER-2 in human pancreatic cancer cells
2012
Pancreatic cancer is a complex malignancy arising from the accumulation of genetic and epigenetic defects in the affected cells. Standard chemotherapy for patients with advanced disease shows only modest effects and is associated with considerable toxicity. Overexpression or aberrant activation of members of the epidermal growth factor receptor tyrosine kinase family, which includes EGFR and HER-2, occurs frequently and is associated with multiple drug resistance and decreased patient survival. In this study, we have investigated the therapeutic potential of AS104, a novel compound of the triazene class, with potential inhibitory effects on EGFR. We found that treatment of cells with AS104 …
Current Role of Intraoperative Frozen Section Examination of Sentinel Lymph Node in Early Breast Cancer.
2020
Background/Aim: The aim of this study was to evaluate the current role of frozen section in identifying patients who could benefit from an immediate axillary lymph node dissection (ALND), following the criteria of the ASOCOG Z0011 and IBCSG 23-10 trials. Patients and Methods: A retrospective review was performed involving 2,079 patients with early breast cancer who underwent conservative surgery or total mastectomy with sentinel lymph node biopsy. Results: Sensitivity and diagnostic accuracy were 63.8% and 90.3%, respectively. Sensitivity was significantly higher (p<0.001) in finding macrometastases (81.8%) compared to micrometastases (11.9%). Frozen section was useful only in 7.7% of th…
Tracking seasonal drought effects on ecosystem light use efficiency in a mediterranean forest using climatic and remote sensing data
2012
Daily values of light use efficiency (LUE) of a Mediterranean forest throughout five years have been analyzed in terms of different spectral indices obtained from MODIS products and which are informative on the water stress conditions. Although correlations between LUE and the different indices are rather high, the inter-annual variation of LUE due to the summer water stress is not well identified in most of them. In particular, the PRI (photochemical reflectance index) inter-annual variation has been found to be mostly attributable to concurrent variations in sun and view zenith angles. For the study area and at MODIS spatial resolution, the different indices are informative on changes in …
Assessment of MODIS imagery to track light-use efficiency in a water-limited Mediterranean pine forest
2012
Abstract Daily values of gross primary production ( GPP ) derived from an eddy-covariance flux tower have been used to analyze the information content of the MODIS Photochemical Reflectance Index ( PRI ) on the light-use efficiency ( e ). The study has been conducted in a Mediterranean Pinus pinaster forest showing summer water stress. Advanced processing techniques have been used to analyze the effect of various external factors on e and PRI temporal variations. The intra-annual correlation between these two variables has been found to be mostly attributable to concurrent variations in sun and view zenith angles. The PRI has been normalized from these angular effects ( NPRI ), and its abil…
Solar angle and sky light effects on ground reflectance measurements in a citrus canopy
1993
Abstract Ground radiometry was used to gather spectral data from different targets of a citrus canopy, in order to analyze the effect of solar zenith angle and proportion of diffuse radiation on spectral reflectance. Results have shown that the variation in solar angle causes significant changes in nadirsensed reflectance from vegetation, which exhibits a marked diurnal pattern with a minimum slightly shifted from the solar noon. This fact is more noticeable in the near-infrared and middle-infrared regions of the spectrum. Furthermore, the visible part of the spectrum has resulted in being highly influenced by the diffuse radiation incident on the canopy, which has been quantified by two di…
Gas—liquid chromatographic analyses
1984
Abstract The gas chromatography (GC) of n -alkyl acetates (CH 3 COOR), chloroacetates (CH 2 ClCOOR), dichloroacetates (CHCl 2 COOR) and trichloroacetates (CCl 3 COOR), where the alcohol chain length (R) varied between 1 and 8, and certain of their monochlorinated derivatives, 176 compounds altogether, has been studied on SE-30 and OV-351 glass capillary columns under the same operating conditions. The isomeric monochlorinated esters are eluted in direct order from the 1- chloro to the ω-chloro isomer, the separation of the isomers being complete on OV- 351. On SE-30, however, the peaks of the 6- and 7-chlorooctyl esters are partly overlapped. The separation of the mixtures of odd- and e…
Substituent effect of nitro group on aromaticity of carbazole rings
2014
The molecular geometries of carbazole and its 17 nitro derivatives were optimized at the B3LYP/6-311++G(2d,2p) level of theory. The harmonic oscillator model of aromaticity and nucleus-independent chemical shift descriptors of π-electron delocalization were calculated to estimate the aromaticity of the carbazole five- and six-membered rings. The biggest changes in the value of both descriptors were observed for the pyrrole ring. The nitro group attached to 3 and/or 6 positions of the carbazole ring system exerts only a slight influence on the benzene ring aromaticity.
Geographical mapping of metabolites in biological tissue with quantitative bioluminescence and single photon imaging
1993
This article features a novel technique for measuring the spatial distribution of metabolites, such as ATP, glucose, and lactate, in rapidly frozen tissue. Concentration values are obtained in absolute terms and with a spatial resolution of single-cell dimension. The method is based on enzymatic reactions that link the metabolite of interest to luciferase with subsequent light emission. Using a specific array, cryosections are brought into contact with the enzymes in a well-defined, reproducible way inducing a distribution of light across the section with an intensity that is proportional to the metabolite concentration. The emitted light can be visualized through a microscope and an imagin…
Antitumoural properties of benzannelated seven-membered 5-fluorouracil derivatives and related open analogues. Molecular markers for apoptosis and ce…
2005
Attention is increasingly being focussed on the cell cycle and apoptosis as potential targets for therapeutic intervention in cancer. We prepared a series of bioisosteric benzannelated seven-membered 5-FU O,N-acetals to test them against the MCF-7 human breast cancer cell line. Benzo-fused seven-membered O,O-acetals or their acyclic analogues led to the expected 5-FU O,N-acetals (or aminals), in addition to six- and 14-membered aminal structures and acyclic compounds. All the cyclic aminals provoked a G0/G1-phase cell cycle arrest, whereas Ftorafur, a known prodrug of 5-FU, and 1-[2-(2-hydroxymethyl-4-nitrophenoxy)-1-methoxyethyl]-5-fluorouracil (11) induced an S-phase cell cycle arrest. Al…
