Conditions of cultural citizenship: intersections of gender, race and age in public debates on family migration

2015

This article analyses problem framings in public debates on family migration in Finland. The study focuses on the less-examined category of age and how it intersects with gender, race and religion. We examine the discursive context within which parliamentarians and the media negotiate questions of migration policies, belonging and citizenship. Our analysis identifies problem framings by combining frame analysis with the ‘What is the problem represented to be?’ approach, which understands policies as problematizations. We found that the debates held up the rather common notion of vulnerable women and children as groups that tighter family migration policies protect. The debates excluded cert…

Disaster Risk Reduction for All? Understanding Intersectionality in Disaster Situations

2021

When designing digital services for citizens in a disaster situation, the diversity of its audience and their particular needs are not always sufficiently taken into account. Variables like digital equipment available, environment, disabilities, socio-economic status, etc., play a significant role in people’s ability to access and exchange important information through digital means. In this paper, we will examine some factors that lead to this inequality, and we see that they tend to boil down to a lack of awareness or focus on the diversity of the population, and this affects not only people with disabilities, but also other disadvantaged groups. More broadly, we will examine this in term…

First occurrence of the needle-spined urchin Diadema setosum (Leske, 1778) (Echinodermata, Diadematidae) in the southern Mediterranean Sea

2022

The first occurrence of Diadema setosum in the southern Mediterranean waters is recorded from the shores of Libya and Egypt, through the input by citizens’ science. The expansion of this invasive sea urchin in the Mediterranean basin is briefly discussed.

Effect of sodium dodecyl sulphate and Brij-35 on the analysis of sulphonamides in physiological samples using direct injection and acetonitrile gradi…

2016

Micellar liquid chromatography (MLC) is a reversed-phase (RP) mode, which often does not require gradient elution, since the peaks of mixtures of compounds within a large range of polarities appear more evenly distributed in the chromatograms of isocratic elution, giving rise to a “gradient effect”. However, the use of a gradient of organic solvent may still be convenient to shorten the total analysis time. This work compares the separation of 15 sulphonamides using conventional hydro-organic RPLC and MLC with the surfactants sodium dodecyl sulphate (SDS) and Brij-35, and both isocratic and gradient elution with acetonitrile. The observed behaviour is rationalized attending to the interacti…

Preparation, separation and identification of some para-substituted ONN and NNO trans-azoxybenzenes

2001

A series of para-substituted azoxybenzenes was obtained as model compounds for the investigation on the mechanism of Wallach rearrangement. Oxidation of azobenzenes with hydrogen peroxide in acetic acid solution, provided mixtures of α and β isomers. Some couples of the products were separated, using chromatography and crystallization techniques, and identified on the basis of their carbon NMR and mass spectra. The SCSD algorithm can be applied to the interpretation of the 13C-NMR spectra. Recognition of the ipso and para carbons suffice to the identification of an isomer, hence there are no strong interactions between the azoxy group and another substituent across the aromatic ring. Fragme…

Thermodynamics of transfer of polar additives from the aqueous to the dodecylsurfactant micellar phases

1990

The enthalpies of transfer from water to aqueous surfactant solutions, ΔH(W→W+S), of polar additives have been determined as a function of the surfactant concentration at fixed additive concentration. The surfactants used are sodium dodecylsulfate (NaDS), dodecyltrimethylammonium bromide and dodecyldimethylamine oxide (DDAO). The additives used are iso-butanol t-butanol, butoxyethanol, phenol, benzene, tributylphosphine oxide (TBPO), octyldimethylphosphine oxide (ODPO), octydimethylamine oxide (ODAO), DDAO and NaDS. A maximum was observed in the plots of ΔH(W→W+S) vs. fsms curves for ODPO and ODAO in NaDS while a small minimum was observed for TBPO. The experimental data are rationalized on…

Hydrophobic effects in the stabilisation of copper(I) by the macrocyclic ligands 16,17,19,20-tetramethyl-2,6,9,13-tetraaza[14]paracyclophane and 14,1…

1996

Abstract The interaction of Cu 2+ with the para -azacychlophanes 16,17,19,20-tetramethyl-2,6,9,13-tetraazal[14]paracyclophane (L1) and 14,15,17,18-tetramethyl-2,5,8,11-tetraaza[12]paracyclophane (L2) has been studied by potentiometry, and direct microcalorimetry at 298.1±0.1 K in 0.15 mol dm −3 NaClO 4 . The stability constants (log K CuLi = 13.35(3), log K CuL2 = 9.32(4)) and the thermodynamic parameters ( ΔH ° CuL1 = −47.3(8) kJ mol −1 , ΔH ° CuL2 = 20.9(8) kJ mol −1 ) evidence that not all four nitrogen atoms in the ligands are involved in the coordination to the metal centre. These results, particulary in the case of L1, are similar to those reported for the analogous cyclophanes contai…
