In the second half of the sixteenth century, the transfer of knowledge is a con- flict situation: on the one hand, there is a generalised thirst for knowledge but, on the other, a fear of the circulation of new ideas on the part of both the secular and religious authorities. This was especially the case with regard to informa- tion related to the areas of medicine, astronomy, and alchemy-magic which was banned or censored. The history of Italian publishing industry in the last years of Fascism reveals different strategies, that outline a non-heterogeneous panorama of the positions taken by publishers towards the regime's cultural policy. Alongside the publishers, like Corticelli, Salani and Guanda, who were somehow ready to collaborate with the regime, there were others who found constant compromises to keep afloat even not unconditionally submit to the new rules. The article illustrates the main trends of this phenomenon, by focusing on the Mondadori case and illustrating some contradictions that characterized its editorial policy.
