Diagnosis of boron, fluorine, lead, nickel and zinc toxicity in citrus plantations in Villarreal, Spain

1997

In the late 1980s, citrus plantations in the area of Villarreal (Spain) showed injuries similar to those previously reported for boron and fluorine toxicity. The area was affected by the disposal of industrial wastewater, mainly from ceramic industries. Conjunctive uses of surface water, groundwater and wastewater for irrigation had taken place. A survey was conducted at 25 orchards to assess leaves and soil for their boron, fluorine, lead, nickel and zinc contents. Wastewater and groundwater were also analyzed to corroborate the presence of these pollutants. The results showed that both boron and fluorine contents were greater than those reported as excess at the most part of the orchards …

Inorganic nanomaterials in the aquatic environment: behavior, toxicity, and interaction with environmental elements

2016

AbstractThe aim of this paper is to present characteristics, toxicity and environmental behavior of nanoparticles (NPs) (silver, copper, gold, zinc oxide, titanium dioxide, iron oxide) that most frequently occur in consumer products. In addition, NPs are addressed as the new aquatic environmental pollutant of the 21stcentury. NPs are adsorbed onto particles in the aquatic systems (clay minerals, fulvic and humic acids), or they can adsorb environmental pollutants (heavy metal ions, organic compounds). Nanosilver (nAg) is released from consumer products into the aquatic environment. It can threaten aquatic organisms with high toxicity. Interestingly, copper nanoparticles (Cu-NPs) demonstrate…

Understanding the Stability and Recrystallization Behavior of Amorphous Zinc Phosphate

2021

Zinc phosphate, an important pigment in phosphate conversion coatings, forms protective films on rubbing surfaces. We have simulated the underlying reactions under shear by ball-milling zinc phosphate and monitored the reaction of hopeite (Zn3(PO4)2·4H2O) and the retarded recrystallization of the amorphous reaction product by powder X-ray diffraction (PXRD) and quantitative infrared (IR) spectroscopy. Abrasion of stainless steel was simulated by addition of pure 57Fe. The results provide insight into the chemistry of phosphate conversion coatings or during battery cycling of metal phosphates and give theoretical guidance for the preparation of amorphous phosphates. Thermal analysis revealed…

Atomic Layer Deposition of Intermetallic Fe4Zn9 Thin Films from Diethyl Zinc

2022

| openaire: EC/H2020/765378/EU//HYCOAT We present a new type of atomic layer deposition (ALD) process for intermetallic thin films, where diethyl zinc (DEZ) serves as a coreactant. In our proof-of-concept study, FeCl3 is used as the second precursor. The FeCl3 + DEZ process yields in situ crystalline Fe4Zn9 thin films, where the elemental purity and Fe/Zn ratio are confirmed by time-of-flight elastic recoil detection analysis (TOF-ERDA), Rutherford backscattering spectrometry (RBS), atomic absorption spectroscopy (AAS), and energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDX) analyses. The film thickness is precisely controlled by the number of precursor supply cycles, as expected for an ALD process.…

High-Order Harmonics Generation in Atomic and Molecular Zinc Plasmas

2021

We demonstrate the variations of single harmonic resonance enhancement during high-order harmonics generation in zinc-containing atomic and molecular species at the conditions of single-color and two-color pumps of laser-induced plasmas by applying different laser sources. We show how selenides of this metal notably modify the enhancement of single (9th, 15th or 16th) harmonic compared with purely atomic zinc plasmas. The variations of single harmonic enhancement are demonstrated using fixed (806 nm) and tunable (1280–1440 nm) radiation.

Are zinc-bound metallothionein isoforms (I+II and III) involved in impaired thymulin production and thymic involution during ageing?

2004

Abstract Background With advancing age, thymic efficiency shows progressive decline due to thymic involution allowing impaired cell-mediated immunity and the appearance of age-related diseases. The intrinsic cause of thymic involution is still undefined. Chronic inflammation and high glucocorticoids (GCs) may be involved. However, transgenic mice, with increased GC sensitivity and over expression of GC receptors, display delayed age-associated thymic involution. This fact suggests that other substances may affect thymic involution. Among them, both isoforms of metallothioneins (MTs) I+II and III are the major candidates because their increments leads to organ atrophy in constant stress and …

Probing the Extremes of Covalency in M-Al bonds: Lithium and Zinc Aluminyl Compounds.

2022

Synthetic routes to lithium, magnesium, and zinc aluminyl complexes are reported, allowing for the first structural characterization of an unsupported lithium-aluminium bond. Crystallographic and quantum-chemical studies are consistent with the presence of a highly polar Li-Al interaction, characterized by a low bond order and relatively little charge transfer from Al to Li. Comparison with magnesium and zinc aluminyl systems reveals changes to both the M-Al bond and the (NON)Al fragment (where NON=4,5-bis(2,6-diisopropylanilido)-2,7-di-tert-butyl-9,9-dimethylxanthene), consistent with a more covalent character, with the latter complex being shown to react with CO2 vi…

Asymptotic modeling of electrochemical signaling: Testing Zn in urine for non-invasive bladder cancer diagnosis

2021

Abstract A theoretical model on chemical signaling for diagnosis based on the combination of signals for marker and inert and/or interfering metabolites is described. The model yields asymptotic relationships between the intensities of the signals representative of marker and accompanying metabolites compensating concentration fluctuations. The model fits well with voltammetric features associated to the oxidation of different urine metabolites and Zn(II) reduction in the same urine samples after alkaline digestion. As a result, a non-invasive electrochemical detection of urothelial carcinoma (bladder cancer, BC) is reported. Different diagnostic criteria are described all displaying high s…

Zinc acexamate inhibits gastric acid and pepsinogen secretion in the rat.

1990

Abstract Pretreatment with zinc acexamate (25–100 mg kg−1 i.p.) inhibited acid and pepsinogen secretion in the pylorus-ligated rat. Zinc acexamate (5–50 mg kg−1 p.o.) also inhibited the increases in acid secretion induced by carbachol (10 μg kg−1) and 2-deoxy-D-glucose (200 mg kg−1) in the perfused stomach of the anaesthetized rat. A delayed antisecretory effect was observed with this drug on histamine induced responses. High concentrations of zinc acexamate (10−5-10−2 M) did not modify the in-vitro activity of pepsin. Administration of zinc acexamate resulted in an increase in the presence of pepsinogen at the mucosal level. A morphological examination of the gastric mucosa confirmed an ac…

Chelation of synaptic zinc induces overexcitation in the hilar mossy cells of the rat hippocampus.

2004

Complete removal of synaptic zinc by the chelator dietyldithiocarbamate (DEDTC; 500 mg/kg i.p.) in rat was followed by convulsive behaviour including wet dog shakes alternating immobility. Histological analysis 1 day after DEDTC administration detected expression of heat shock protein in the hippocampus restricted to hilar cells. These cells colocalize the marker for neurons and the glutamate receptor GluR2/3 showing that they are excitatory neurons. Additionally, they projected to the contralateral dentate gyrus. Therefore, they correspond to hilar mossy cells. These data show that the synaptic zinc has a role in normal hippocampus avoiding overexcitation, that would impair functionality e…
