The representatives of the liturgical movement knew that the renewal of the religious life of the faithful required a proper definition of the essence of the liturgy and of what the Church is. Then, they not only distanced themselves from the rubricist view of the liturgy, but also developed its new understanding and the importance of the faithful's active participation in celebrations. Opactwo klasztoru kanonikow regularnych reguły świętego Augustyna w Żaganiu powstało w 1284 r. w wyniku translacji z opactwa, a przedtem prepozytury ufundowanej przez Henryka Brodatego z Nowogrodu Bobrzańskiego. Początkowo zakonnicy związani z klasztorem NMP na Piasku we Wrocławiu drugiej połowie XII w. uzyskali niezależność od macierzystej jednostki. Niektóre z aspektow działalności kanonikow z Żagania zostało już w historiografii zbadane. Najlepiej poznaną osobą z tego konwentu jest autor kroniki klasztornej Ludolf.
