LDL size and subclasses in patients with abdominal aortic aneurysm

2009

Abstract Since the type of dyslipidemia in patients with abdominal aortic aneurysm (AAA) is still insufficiently defined, we measured plasma lipids and analyzed LDL size and subclasses by gradient gel electrophoresis in 30 male patients (69±6 years, BMI: 27±3) with newly diagnosed AAA and in 26 age- and BMI-matched male healthy controls. Patients with AAA had lower HDL-cholesterol ( p p =.0002) and smaller LDL size ( p p =.0210) in relation to controls. Multivariate analysis also showed that small LDL size was independently associated with the presence of AAA ( p =.0350). Increased levels of small, dense LDL may therefore represent a common feature in patients with AAA.

Arachnoidalzyste der Keilbeinhöhle

1998

BACKGROUND Arachnoid cysts of the paranasal sinus are rare. They have not been described yet in the sphenoid sinus. PATIENT AND METHOD Microscopic-endoscopic endonasal surgery of the sphenoid sinus was performed on a 34-year-old female with a history of chronic headaches and a suspected mucocele of the sphenoid sinus in computed tomography (CT) and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) studies. An extended arachnoid cyst was found in the enlarged sphenoid sinus, which was obliterated with collagen, fibrin glue, and abdominal fat. RESULTS There were no complications after the operation, and 12 months later the patient is still free of symptoms. CONCLUSION Arachnoidal cysts present in CT and MRI a…

Consenso Delphi sobre el manejo de la dislipidemia en pacientes con alteración del metabolismo de la glucosa: estudio Diana

2016

Objectives The aim of the present study was to develop a multidisciplinary consensus based on the Delphi system to establish clinical recommendations for the management of dyslipidaemia when hyperglycaemia is present, and the relevant factors that should be taken into consideration when prescribing and monitoring treatment with statins. Methods The questionnaire developed by the scientific committee included four blocks of questions about dyslipidaemia in patients with impaired glucose metabolism. The results of the first two blocks are presented here: a) management of dyslipidaemia; b) relevant factors that should be taken into consideration when prescribing and monitoring treatment with s…

The Vascular Anatomy of the Inner Anterior Abdominal Wall with Special Reference to the Transversus and Rectus Abdominis Musculoperitoneal (TRAMP) Co…

1997

This study was designed to clarify the vascularization of the inner anterior abdominal wall with respect to the novel transversus and rectus abdominis musculoperitoneal (TRAMP) flap, which was introduced recently for vaginal reconstruction. A series of human cadavers was injected with a lead oxide-gelatine mixture by means of the deep inferior epigastric artery and subsequently dissected and examined by radiography. In all cases we found that the blood supply of the entire rectus abdominis muscle from the symphysis to the costal arch and that of the medial 10 to 15 cm of the transversus abdominis muscle, as well as the underlying peritoneum, was provided by several branches of the deep infe…

Differences in Inter-Rectus Distance and Abdominopelvic Function between Nulliparous, Primiparous and Multiparous Women

2021

Widening of the inter-rectus distance (IRD) is highly prevalent among postpartum women and can lead to dysfunction of abdominopelvic muscles. The aim of this study was to evaluate the differences in IRD and abdominopelvic function between nulliparous, primiparous and multiparous women. A cross-sectional study was conducted on 75 women (25 nulliparous, 25 primiparous and 25 multiparous at 6 months postpartum). The participants underwent ultrasound assessment under three conditions (at rest, abdominal draw-in maneuver (ADIM) and curl-up) at two locations (2 cm above and 2 cm below the umbilicus). Furthermore, abdominopelvic muscle function was determined by prone, supine and side bridge tests…

OneShot-M: A New Device for Close Laparoscopy Pneumoperitoneum

2018

Introduction. The induction of pneumoperitoneum is the first and most critical phase of laparoscopy, due to the significant risk of serious vascular and visceral complications. The closed technique for the creation of pneumoperitoneum could lead to several surgical complications. The present study aimed to overcome the complications associated with the insertion of Veress needle, improving its use, and facilitating the rapid creation of pneumoperitoneum. Methods. Thirty large white female pigs were enrolled in our study. A common plunger was modified in order to allow the passage of a 15-cm long Veress needle. This method was applied to 26 laparoscopic procedures (26 pigs) of several speci…

Ultrasound-guided spinal fracture repositioning

1998

The management of narrowing spinal fragments in the operative treatment of spinal fractures remains an open question, in particular when the procedure is performed by a posterior approach. This article describes the use of intraoperative ultrasonography during spinal surgery. From 1990 to 1997, 116 spinal fractures were treated operatively at our clinic. Stabilization of the spine was achieved with the AO fixateur interne and the AO USS, respectively (Synthes, D-79224, Umkirch, Germany). For 60 cases who had a fractured posterior vertebral surface dislocated into the spinal canal, we used intraoperative ultrasonography to monitor the repositioning of the narrowing fragments. The patients un…

Value of routine abdominal and lymph node sonography in the follow-up of breast cancer patients.

1994

Abstract Objective: The aim of this study was to review usefulness and intervals for abdominal sonography during the follow-up of breast cancer patients. Additionally, we assessed the value of regional lymph node sonography in patients with possible locoregional recurrence. Subjects: Retrospectively, 2657 abdominal ultrasound examinations of 414 patients and 299 sonographic examinations of the regional lymph nodes in 227 patients after surgical treatment for breast cancer were evaluated. Results: Follow-up abdominal sonography revealed metastases in 6.8% of patients, and in 1% of examinations. There was no dependence on the initial T- or N-stage. At sonography of the regional lymph nodes in…

Acute aortic dissection

2011

An acute aortic syndrome with simultaneous presence of a penetrating aortic ulcer, an intramural haematoma, a thoracic aortic dissection and an abdominal aortic aneurysm rupture has not previously been reported. Herein, we describe our experience with a patient treated by endovascular means with an 8-year follow-up.

Systemic pulsatile pressure in type II endoleaks after stent grafting of experimental abdominal aortic aneurysms.

2003

Purpose: To investigate pressure and maximum rate of rise of systolic pressure (peak dP/dt) in completely excluded aneurysms and endoleaks to determine the hemodynamic impact of endoleaks. Methods: In mongrel dogs (n = 36) experimental aneurysms were created by insertion of a patch (portion of rectus abdominis muscle sheath) into the infrarenal aorta. In group I (n = 18), all aortic branches of the aneurysm were ligated and all aneurysms were completely excluded by stent grafts. Group II (n = 18) consisted of aneurysms with patent aortic side branches that represented sources of endoleaks. One week (n = 12), six weeks (n = 12), and six months (n = 12) after stent grafting, hemodynamic measu…
