Prognostische Bedeutung des e-Cadherin beim papillären Schilddrüsencarcinom

1998

The prognostic significance of e-cadherin in papillary thyroid carcinoma was evaluated in a retrospective study. From September 1985 to December 1996, 113 patients underwent surgery for papillary thyroid carcinoma. Seventy-eight formalin-fixed, paraffin-embedded tissue samples were available for immunohistochemical analysis of e-cadherin expression. In 74 of these 78 patients the postoperative course is known for 2 months to 35.2 years (median 3.6 years, mean: 4.9 +/- 4.8 years). Reduced or negative e-cadherin expression ( 20%. Statistical analysis revealed e-cadherin expression ( 20%), synchronous distant metastasis (M0/pM1, cM1) and radicality of resection (R0/R1, 2) as significant risk f…

Management of Small Bowel Perforation by a Bizarre Foreign Body in a 55-Year-Old Woman

2018

Introduction. Ingestion of foreign bodies including dentures, fishbone, screw, and/or surgical devices can be a cause of morbidity, and it rarely could be fatal. Presentation of Case. We present the first hitherto reported case of mussel shell ingestion, which caused acute abdominal pain in a 55-year-old woman. The shell pierced ileal loops, and it was found in the abdominal cavity. Discussion. The accidental or voluntary ingestion of a foreign body is an uncommon event compared to the other causes of bowel perforation. It is fundamental to immediately remove the intestinal fluid, repair the tear, and prevent sepsis, because each delay in diagnosis can lead to a worst outcome. Conclusion. I…

Pasteurized C1 inhibitor concentrate in hereditary angioedema: pharmacology, safety, efficacy and future directions

2010

Hereditary angioedema (HAE) is a relatively rare genetic disorder that is most commonly caused by a deficiency of C1 inhibitor. It is estimated that HAE affects at least one in 10,000 to one in 50,000 of the worldwide population, with relapsing swelling of the skin and abdominal pain attacks being the most common clinical symptoms. Most seriously, laryngeal edema associated with HAE may lead to death. Replacement therapy with intravenous pasteurized C1 inhibitor concentrate is the recommended treatment for acute attacks of HAE, resulting in a rapid resolution of symptoms. Pasteurized C1 inhibitor concentrates can also be used for prophylaxis of HAE, and are currently also being assessed for…

Thrombophilic Genetic Factors PAI-1, MTHFRC677T, V Leiden 506Q, and Prothrombin 20210A in Noncirrhotic Portal Vein Thrombosis and Budd-Chiari Syndrom…

2013

Thrombophilic genetic factors PAI-1, MTHFRC677T, V Leiden 506Q, and Prothrombin 20210A were studied as risk factors in 235 Caucasian subjects: 85 patients with abdominal thrombosis (54 with portal vein thrombosis (PVT) and 31 with Budd-Chiari syndrome (BCS) without liver cirrhosis or hepatocellular carcinoma) and 150 blood bank donors. Seventy-five patients with PVT/BCS showed associated disease or particular clinical status (46 PVT/29 BCS): 37 myeloproliferative neoplasm (20 PVT/17 BCS), 12 abdominal surgery (10 PVT/2 BCS), 10 contraception or pregnancy (6 PVT/4 BCS), 7 abdominal acute disease (6 PVT/1 BCS), and 9 chronic disease (4 PVT/5 BCS); ten patients did not present any association …

Polymorphisms of the UCP2 gene are associated with body fat distribution and risk of abdominal obesity in Spanish population

2011

Eur J Clin Invest 2011 Abstract Background  Increased accumulation of fat results from an imbalance between energy expenditure and intake, being modulated by different environmental and genetic factors. Uncoupling proteins (UCPs) are mitochondrial carrier proteins able to spend energy generating heat. Therefore, variations in these genes are good candidates as potential modulators of body fat accumulation. Our aim was to investigate the possible association of genetic variations of the gene codifying the UCP2 protein with obesity and fat distribution. Design  We performed a cross-sectional study in 2367 individuals from two population-based studies from different regions of Spain. The Horte…

Subclinical atherosclerosis: independent predictor of cardiovascular events in a 20-years follow up of patients with or without metabolic syndrome

2013

Purpose: To evaluate the influence of carotid atherosclerosis and metabolic syndrome (MetS) on the prediction of cardiovascular events during a 20-years follow-up. Methods: We studied a population of 529 asymptomatic patients, divided into 2 groups according to the results of the carotid ultrasound evaluation: one without atherosclerotic lesions (198 patients) and a second one with an increased carotid IMT or asymptomatic carotid plaque (331 patients). In each of these groups, we identified two subgroups of subjects with and without MetS. Cardiovascular endpoints were investigated in a 20-years follow-up: acute myocardial infarction, angina, transient ischemic attack, ischemic stroke, abdom…

Myogenic effects enhance norepinephrine constriction: Inhibition by nitric oxide and felodipine

1998

Myogenic effects enhance norepinephrine constriction: Inhibition by nitric oxide and felodipine. Myogenic, pressure-induced vasoconstriction may amplify the effects of circulating vasoconstrictors. Through intravital microscopy in cremaster arterioles (31 to 115 μm diameter), the relative contribution of myogenic responses (MR) to norepinephrine (NE)-induced constriction and the inhibitor potency of nitric oxide (NO) or a Ca2+ entry blocker (CEB), felodipine (F), were examined. In 24 anesthetized hamsters, a vessel occluder was placed around the aorta to control cremaster vessel inflow pressure (IP). NE infusion increased blood pressure (by 50 ± 2mm Hg) and induced significant constriction …

Preoperative Botulinum Toxin and Progressive Pneumoperitoneum in Loss of Domain Hernias-Our First 100 Cases

2020

Objectives: Preoperative botulinum toxin type A (BT) and progressive pneumoperitoneum (PPP) are useful tools in the preparation of patients with loss of domain hernias (LODH). The purpose of our retrospective study is to report our experience in the treatment of 100 consecutive patients with LODH, with the combined use of these techniques. Methods: Of the 753 patients operated on for ventral incisional hernia between June 2010 and December 2018 in our hospital, 100 patients with LODH were analyzed retrospectively. Diameters of abdominal cavity and hernia sac, and volumes of incisional hernia (VIH) and abdominal cavity (VAC) were calculated from CT scan, based on the index of Tanaka. Results…
