Is it wrong to deliberately conceive or give birth to a child with mental retardation?

2002

This paper discusses the issues of deciding to have a child with mental retardation, and of terminating a pregnancy when the future child is known to have the same disability. I discuss these problems by criticizing a utilitarian argument, namely, that one should act in a way that results in less suffering and less limited opportunity in the world. My argument is that future parents ought to assume a strong responsibility towards the well-being of their prospective children when they decide to reproduce. The moral point in cases in which our acts affect the well-being of future children should be expressed strictly in terms of parents' culpability. Future children thus do not have current m…

Prenatal diagnosis of infantile neuronal ceroid-lipofuscinosis: a combined electron microscopic and molecular genetic approach.

1995

Based on two unrelated index patients afflicted with INCL, fetal chorion tissues were studied from subsequent pregnancies of the two respective mothers resulting in the prenatal diagnosis of INCL in two of the three pregnancies. Documentation of INCL was based on electron microscopy and DNA studies of the biopsied chorion tissue, later confirmed in the two affected fetuses after termination of their pregnancies by demonstrating INCL-specific lipopigments in post-mortem tissues, in the liver of both aborted fetuses and, additionally, in spleen and skeletal muscle of one of the affected fetuses. The autolysis of the aborted tissues, however, precluded a systematic documentation of all affecte…

Adolescent sexual behavior during periods of increase and decrease in the abortion rate.

2009

OBJECTIVE: To study changes in adolescent sexual behavior in periods of increase (1994-2000) and decrease (2001-2007) in the abortion rate. METHODS: School surveys with self-administered questionnaires were carried out annually among eighth graders (mean age 14.8 years) and ninth graders (mean age 15.8 years) (N=286665) in 1996/1997 and 2006/2007. Schools participated biennially. The proportions of respondents reporting noncoital (kissing light petting heavy petting) and coital (ever had sexual intercourse intercourse at least 10 times at least three partners) sexual experience and nonuse of contraception were studied. RESULTS: Among adolescents both coital and noncoital sexual experiences …

Perceived Partner’s Self-Control and Social Support Effects on Relationship Satisfaction in Couples Experiencing Infertility or Miscarriage: Dyadic A…

2022

The process that infertile couples and those after a miscarriage go through is unpredictable and difficult to control; therefore, it is associated with a lowered sense of control for both partners. Uncontrolled stress creates a higher level of anxiety, which is associated not only with a lower quality of life but also with worse results from infertility treatment and higher risks of miscarriage. The aim of this study was to analyze the relationship between the partner’s perceived self-control and marital satisfaction in the context of the partners’ coping strategies. The actor-partner interdependence model was applied to 90 heterosexual married couples. Our results show that men…

2014

The essay take into account the increase in the number of abortion among migrant women in Italy in the wider context of the living conditions of these women which are often subjected to a multiple discrimination related to gender, migrant status, and kind of job. The feminization of migrations towards Italy is put in connection with the feminization of the labour market and with the arrival of specific nationalities of migrants. After having compared the data related to the abortion with respect to Italian and migrant women, this contribution enter into the details of the socio-economic characteristics of these second ones’ life, by analyzing the bond existing with the recourse to abortion.…

Missed abortion etioloģija, gestācijas laiks un terapijas izvēle

2021

Monoclonal antibodies SMI 311 and SMI 312 as tools to investigate the maturation of nerve cells and axonal patterns in human fetal brain

1998

Neurofilaments, which are exclusively found in nerve cells, are one of the earliest recognizable features of the maturing nervous system. The differential distribution of neurofilament proteins in varying degrees of phosphorylation within a neuron provides the possibility of selectively demonstrating either somata and dendrites or axons. Non-phosphorylated neurofilaments typical of somata and dendrites can be visualized with the aid of monoclonal antibody SMI 311, whereas antibody SMI 312 is directed against highly phosphorylated axonal epitopes of neurofilaments. The maturation of neuronal types, the development of area-specific axonal networks, and the gradients of maturation can thus be …
