Six-day-old rice plants (Oryza sativa L., cv Bahia) were grown for 5 days more in nutrient solution culture containing 10−5 M abscisic acid (ABA) or gibberellic acid (GA3) (treated plants). Plasma membrane (PM) vesicles were isolated from the shoots of treated or control plants, and ATPase hydrolytic and proton-pumping activity, fluidity, and free sterol and phospholipid composition were determined. Both treatments resulted in modified plant growth and increases in PM fluidity. The ATPase hydrolytic activity was decreased by 25% of control values with ABA treatment and by 35% with GA3. Somatic embryogenesis was induced in hypocotyls of Digitalis obscura using indoleacetic acid or 2,4-dichlorophenoxyacetic acid with different culture and subculture conditions. Indoleacetic acid-induced embryogenic cultures were used to investigate the effects of amino acids, polyamines and growth regulators on embryo differentiation and maturation. Supplementation of the media with amino acids, polyamines or abscisic acid did not influence or had an adverse effect on embryogenic response. Gibberellic acid at 1.4 μM in either culture (30 days) or subculture medium was effective in promoting both differentiation and normal embryo development. Summary The diurnal courses of the contents of 1-aminocyclopropane carboxylic acid (ACC), its malonyl conjugate (MACC) and abscisic acid (ABA) in the two-year-old needles of damaged and undamaged spruce trees (Picea abies L.) were investigated. The contents of ACC and MACC were significantly higher in the needles of the damaged trees as compared with the undamaged ones. In the needles of the damaged spruce trees, the ACC and MACC contents, and ABA contents as well, fluctuated to a greater extent than those in the undamaged spruce trees during the day. The relationships between ACC-ABA and MACC-ACC contents as well are also discussed.

The HVA1 protein belongs to the LEA3 group, which is expressed during the late stage of seed maturation. It is also induced by exogenous abscisic acid (ABA) and a variety of environmental stresses in germinating barley (Hordeum vulgare L.). In the present work, the potential role of HVA1 was investigated by studying its tissue distribution and subcellular localization in mature and stressed seeds by immuno-microscopic methods. A fluorescent analogue of abscisic acid has been prepared by combining (S)‐abscisic acid (ABA) with nitrobenzoxadiazole (NBD) fluorophore using ethanol amine as a linker. Isomerization of the double bond at the side chain of abscisic acid happened during the synthesis. The resulting fluorophore analogues derived from both isomeric compounds entered cells suggesting a wide applicability of the ABA‐NBD conjugates as fluorescent probes to study ABA mechanism of action.
