In this work, we will expose the behaviour of a composite structure reinforced with marble powder. The attention was focused on the effects produced on the physical and mechanical properties due to different kinds of matrix (epoxy and polyester resins) and filler amounts (60%, 70%, 80%). Rheological, static flexural and Izod impact tests have been carried out. Abstract The effects of water uptake on the fracture toughness of epoxy systems with high glass-transition temperatures (Tg above 170 °C) are investigated. Aging conditioning has been conducted in hot water, followed by a desorption conditioning in a room temperature dry-airborne. Water aging determines plasticisation effects and crosslink-density modifications, revealed by reductions of the Tg. It is less known how such modifications influence the material fracture toughness. The influence of moisture absorption on the interlaminar fracture behaviour of 8/8 harness satin weave glass/epoxy composite was investigated. Two series of specimens with 0°/0° and 90°/90° predominant interfaces immersed in water for different duration were tested under double cantilever beam (DCB mode I), single leg bending (SLB mode I + II) and end notched flexural (ENF mode II) loadings. In general, the apparent flexural modulus: E, and the fracture toughness: G C, decrease with increasing moisture content. This effect is more remarkable if mode II participation is bigger. Abstract In this paper, the potentialities of pumice-based geopolymers have been explored with the aim to evaluate their use as restoration materials. In particular, the behaviour of Aeolian pumice during alkali activation process, either alone or in binary mixtures with metakaolin, has been assessed using sodium hydroxide and sodium silicate activators. Hardened products were characterized by: X-ray diffraction; infrared spectroscopy; thermo gravimetry and electron microscopy. In this work, carbon fiber composites through gamma radiation polymerization of epoxy matrices have been produced for aerospace and advanced automotive applications. Abstract Water absorption-desorption-resorption and swelling were studied for a DGEBA-based amine-cured epoxy resin filled with four types of carbon nanoparticles: multiwall carbon nanotubes (MWCNT), graphite nano-platelets (GnP), expanded graphite platelets, and carbon black. Nanocomposites are characterised by lower diffusivity (down to 20% for epoxy/GnP) and increased water sorption capacity compared to the neat epoxy. Determination of in vivo skin moisture level by near-infrared reflectance spectroscopy

Near-infrared spectroscopy has a potential for noninvasive determination of skin moisture level due to high water absorption. In this study, diffuse reflectance spectra of in vivo skin were acquired in the spectral range of 900 nm to 1700 nm by using near-infrared spectrometer, optical fiber and halogen bulb light source. Absorption changes after applying skin moisturizers were analyzed over time at different body sites. Results show difference in absorption when comparing dry and normal skin. Three dimanganese(iii) complexes have been synthesised and fully characterised by standard spectroscopic methods and spectroelectrochemistry. Each MnIII ion is chelated by a salen type ligand (H2L), but there is variation in the bridging group: LMn(OOCCH[double bond, length as m-dash]CHCOO)MnL, LMn(OOCC6H4COO)MnL, and LMn(OOCC6H4C6H4COO)MnL. Influence of the focusing effect on XAFS in ReO3, WO3−x and FeF3

Abstract The role of the focusing effect in the formation of X-ray absorption fine structure (XAFS) is considered for ReO3, non-stoichiometric tungsten oxides WO3−x and FeF3 having the perovskite-type structure. Two cases are mainly discussed: (1) an admixture of rhenium and tungsten L2-edge XAFS in ReO3 and WO3−x crystals to the one above rhenium and tungsten L1-edge and (2) high-order superfocusing effect in Fe0F1Fe2F3Fe4 atomic chain in iron K-edge XAFS of FeF3 which is analysed using an ab initio multiple-scattering approach.
Positronics of radiation-induced effects in chalcogenide glassy semiconductors

Using As2S3 and AsS2 glasses as an example, the principal possibility of using positron annihilation spectroscopy methods for studying the evolution of the free volume of hollow nanoobjects in chalcogenide glassy semiconductors exposed to radiation is shown. The results obtained by measurements of the positron annihilation lifetime and Doppler broadening of the annihilation line in reverse chronological order are in full agreement with the optical spectroscopy data in the region of the fundamental absorption edge, being adequately described within coordination defect-formation and physical-aging models.
