Structural organization of silanol and silicon hydride groups in the amorphous silicon dioxide network

We present a study on the effects of an isothermal annealing treatment on a-SiO 2 having a significant content of silanol hydride groups (Si-H). We examined the properties of the IR absorption bands of silanol (Si-OH) and silicon hydride groups as a function of the duration of the thermal treatment. We showed that the Si-OH and Si-H groups contents decrease in a linearly correlated way. The annealing dynamics suggest that the two species are close to each other in the amorphous network. Poor optical stability of molecular dyes when used as absorbers in water-based tissue-simulating phantoms

Biomedical optical systems and models can be easily validated by the use of tissue-simulating phantoms. They can consist of water-based turbid media which often include inks (India ink and molecular dyes) as absorbers. Optical stability of commonly exploited inks under the influence of light, pH changes and the addition of TiO2 and surfactant, was studied. We found that the exposure to ultraviolet and visible light can crucially affect the absorption properties of molecular dyes. On average, absorption peaks decreased by 47.3% in 150 exposure hours. Analysis of human skin hyper-spectral images by non-negative matrix factorization

International audience; This article presents the use of Non-negative Matrix Factorization, a blind source separation algorithm, for the decomposition of human skin absorption spectra in its main pigments: melanin and hemoglobin. The evaluated spectra come from a Hyper-Spectral Image, which is the result of the processing of a Multi-Spectral Image by a neural network-based algorithm. The implemented source separation algorithm is based on a multiplicative coeffi cient upload. The goal is to represent a given spectrum as the weighted sum of two spectral components. Holographic properties of azobenzene oligomers with differently bonded chromophore groups

Holographic properties of two types (I and II, specified in the text) of azobenzene oligomers (ABO) have been experimentally studied in the spectral region of low absorption at 633 nm. In the case of type I ABO the chromophore groups were covalently bonded to either tolyl-polyurethane or hexamethylene-polyurethane matrix. In the case of type II ABO azobenzene chromophores were dispersed in polystyrene matrix, and their concentration was varied from 0.005 to 0.200 mol/l. Samples were in the form of 10 µm thick films. Large atomic disorder in nanostructured LaNi5 alloys: A la L3-edge extended X-ray absorption fine structure study

Abstract Local structure of the nanostructured LaNi 5 alloys, prepared by ball-milling, has been studied using La L 3 -edge extended X-ray absorption fine structure spectroscopy. The near-neighbor distances tend to decrease with the ball-milling, and the mean square relative displacements (MSRD) show substantial increase suggesting an increased atomic disorder. High temperature annealing helps in partial recovery of atomic order in the ball-milled samples for milling times upto 20 h, however, the long-time ball-milled samples seems to gain only a local random order. Fast determination of fish mineral profile. Application to Vietnamese panga fish

A methodology, based on inductively coupled plasma optical emission spectrometry after microwave-assisted digestion with HNO3/H2O2, was developed to determine the mineral profile of panga fish samples imported from Vietnam. A total of 42 essential and toxic elements were studied in seven samples taken from the local market. Preliminary studies were focused on selecting the best wavelength and the required dilution of samples in order to provide the highest sensitivity to maximize the number of analytes to be determined without spectral or matrix interferences. Bioindication of volcanic mercury (Hg) deposition around Mt. Etna (Sicily)

Mt. Etna is a major natural source of Hg to the Mediterranean region. Total mercury concentrations, [Hg] tot, in Castanea sativa (sweet chestnut) leaves sampled 7-13km from Etna's vents (during six campaigns in 2005-2011) were determined using atomic absorption spectroscopy. [Hg] tot in C. sativa was greatest on Etna's SE flank reflecting Hg deposition from the typically overhead volcanic plume. [Hg] tot also showed Hg accumulation over the growing season, increasing with leaf age and recent eruptive activity. Gas-Phase Photolysis of Hg(I) Radical Species: A New Atmospheric Mercury Reduction Process

The efficient gas-phase photoreduction of Hg(II) has recently been shown to change mercury cycling significantly in the atmosphere and its deposition to the Earth's surface. However, the photolysis of key Hg(I) species within that cycle is currently not considered. Here we present ultraviolet-visible absorption spectra and cross-sections of HgCl, HgBr, HgI, and HgOH radicals, computed by high-level quantum-chemical methods, and show for the first time that gas-phase Hg(I) photoreduction can occur at time scales that eventually would influence the mercury chemistry in the atmosphere. Gold dipyrrin-bisphenolates: A combined experimental and DFT study of metal-ligand interactions

Given that noninnocent and metalloradical-type electronic structures are ubiquitous among dipyrrin-bisphenolate (DPP) complexes, we synthesized the gold(III) derivatives as potentially innocent paradigms against which the properties of other metallo-DPP derivatives can be evaluated. Electronic absorption spectra, electrochemical studies, a single-crystal X-ray structure, and DFT calculations all suggest that the ground states of the new complexes indeed correspond to an innocent AuIII–DPP3−, paralleling a similar description noted for Au corroles.
