Femtometer accuracy EXAFS measurements: Isotopic effect in the first, second and third coordination shells of germanium
2009
The analysis of the EXAFS signals from 70Ge and 76Ge has evidenced the low-temperature effect of isotopic mass difference on the amplitude of relative atomic vibrations. This effect is reflected in the difference of the Debye-Waller factors of the first three coordination shells, and on the difference of nearest-neighbour average interatomic distances, evaluated with femtometer accuracy. The experimental results are in agreement with theoretical expectations.
The lineshape of the electronic spectrum of the green fluorescent protein chromophore, part I: gas phase.
2014
The vibronic spectra of the green fluorescent protein chromophore analogues p-hydroxybenzylidene-2,3-dimethylimidazolinone (HBDI) and 3,5-tert-butyl-HBDI (35Bu) are similar in the vacuum, but very different in water or ethanol. To understand this difference, we have computed the vibrationally resolved solution spectra of these chromophores, using the polarizable continuum model (PCM) to account for solvent effects on the (harmonic) potential energy surfaces (PES). In agreement with experiment, we found that the vibrational progression increases with the polarity of the solvent, but we could neither reproduce the broadening, nor the large difference between the absorption spectra of HBDI and…
Crosslinked chitosan/poly(vinyl alcohol)-based polyelectrolytes for proton exchange membranes
2019
[EN] The preparation polyelectrolytes based on crosslinked poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA) and chitosan (CS) was considered as a feasible alternative to develop highly functionalised, cost-effective and eco-friendly membranes for proton exchange fuel cell technologies. CS/PVA-based membranes were combined with sulfosuccinic acid (SSA) as crosslinking and sulfonating agent, and glycerol (GL) to promote flexibility and favour their manageability. The chemical structure, the thermo-oxidative behaviour, the ethanol uptake, the electric, the proton conductivity, and the performance in direct ethanol fuel cell (DEFC) were assessed. In general, all the CS/PVA-based polyelectrolytes showed a synergetic i…
E-beam crosslinked, biocompatible functional hydrogels incorporating polyaniline nanoparticles
2012
Abstract PANI aqueous nanocolloids in their acid-doped, inherently conductive form were synthesised by means of suitable water soluble polymers used as stabilisers. In particular, poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA) or chitosan (CT) was used to stabilise PANI nanoparticles, thus preventing PANI precipitation during synthesis and upon storage. Subsequently, e-beam irradiation of the PANI dispersions has been performed with a 12 MeV Linac accelerator. PVA-PANI nanocolloid has been transformed into a PVA-PANI hydrogel nanocomposite by radiation induced crosslinking of PVA. CT-PANI nanoparticles dispersion, in turn, was added to PVA to obtain wall-to-wall gels, as chitosan mainly undergoes chain scission…
In Silico Prediction of Caco-2 Cell Permeability by a Classification QSAR Approach
2011
In the present study, 21 validated QSAR models that discriminate compounds with high Caco-2 permeability (Papp ≥8×10(-6) cm/s) from those with moderate-poor permeability (Papp <8×10(-6) cm/s) were developed on a novel large dataset of 674 compounds. 20 DRAGON descriptor families were used. The global accuracies of obtained models were ranking between 78-82 %. A general model combining all types of molecular descriptors was developed and it classified correctly 81.56 % and 83.94 % for training and test sets, respectively. An external set of 10 compounds was predicted and 80 % was correctly assessed by in vitro Caco-2 assays. The potential use of the final model was evaluated by a virtual s…

EDGE: explorer of diffuse emission and gamma-ray burst explosions
2009
How structures on various scales formed and evolved from the early Universe up to present time is a fundamental question of astrophysical cosmology. EDGE will trace the cosmic history of the baryons from the early generations of massive star by Gamma-Ray Burst (GRB) explosions, through the period of cluster formation, down to very low redshifts, when between a third and one half of the baryons are expected to reside in cosmic filaments undergoing gravitational collapse by dark matter (Warm Hot Intragalactic Medium: WHIM). In addition EDGE, with its unprecedented observational capabilities, will provide key results on several other topics. The science is feasible with a medium class mission …
Density Functional Theory Modelled Absorption and Raman Spectra Applicable to Ergocalciferol (Vitamin D2) and Cholecalciferol (D3)
2021
The study establishes optically relevant lines by modelling ergocalciferol (D2) and cholecalciferol (D3) and compare these to measured and earlier reported absorption and Raman spectra lines. This is a step to reach a further goal of finding if minute Vitamin D (D2 and D3) concentration changes could be determined so that a non-invasive sensor could be developed with a reference to non-invasive measurements reported in [1] describing a Raman spectroscopy method of blood glucose concentration of threshold of 5 mmol/l. However, our concentrations are lower by two orders, i.e., 50 nmol/l. At such concentrations random-type metabolites may have an important role, like those related with person’…
Inhibition of Folic Acid Uptake by Catechins and Tea Extracts in Caco-2 Cells
2006
In this present study it was aimed to determine whether the catechins contained in green tea and the whole extracts of Camellia sinensis (Theaceae) inhibit the uptake of folic acid by Caco-2 cell monolayers. Our results indicate that (-)-epigallocatechin 3-gallate (EGCG) and (-)-epicatechin 3-gallate (ECG) inhibit cellular folic acid uptake with IC50 values of 34.8 micromol/L and 30.8 micromol/L, respectively. Furthermore, green and black tea extracts were also found to inhibit folic acid uptake with IC50 values of approximately 7.5 and 3.6 mg/mL, respectively. According to these results, simultaneous intake of tea and folic acid may inhibit intestinal folic acid absorption. The consequence…
Structural-relaxation phenomena in As–S glasses as probed by combined PAL/DBAR technique
2015
Abstract Experimental techniques exploring phenomena of positron–electron interaction, namely the positron annihilation lifetime spectroscopy and Doppler broadening of annihilation radiation, are shown to be very informative tools to study radiation- and thermally-induced phenomena in chalcogenide glasses of binary As–S system. Time-dependent processes of free-volume voids agglomeration (expansion), fragmentation (refining) and disappearing (contraction) are identified as main stages of physical aging in S-rich glasses, while a competitive channel of coordination topological defects formation associated with void charging becomes significant in a vicinity of near-stoichiometric glass compos…
