X-ray-absorption study of rheniumL3andL1edges inReO3: Multiple-scattering approach

1993

We present ab initio calculations of x-ray-absorption fine structure for the Re L 3 and L 1 edges in crystalline ReO 3 based on an exact curved-wave multiple-scattering approach. Good agreement between theoretical and experimental data has been found for both edges. We show that, as expected, the contribution of multiple-scattering signals from linear chains, like Re-O-Re and O-Re-O, is very large both in the L 3 - and L 1 -edge spectra due to the strong focusing effect caused by the middle atom

Environment Humidity Effect on the Weight of Carbonized Na-Al-Si Glass Fabrics Recovery after Heating

2015

Na-Al-Si glass fabrics fibres contain Na+ ions that diffuse to its surface and along with CO2 and H2O from atmosphere create here the shell of carbonate hydrates. The heating of fabric leads to weight loss by evolving these substances. In this work the results of weight recovery study at room relative humidity (20% – 50%) and elevated humidity (near 70%) of fabrics after its heating at different temperatures (70°C – 150°C) are compared. The experiments shoved the different weight recovery kinetics. The initial exponential stages up to 0.3 h – 0.5 h of the both recoveries are associated with water absorption and differ by its levels. In a case of lower environment humidity the later weight i…

Infrared spectroscopy on lead silicate glass

1993

The reflectance spectra of some lead silicate glasses of general formula (PbO)x(SiO2)y have been measured in the infrared frequency range from 50 to 4000 cm−1. The dispersion and absorption spectra in the range 50–2000 cm−1 have been calculated from the reflectance data using the Kramers-Kronig relations. The band at ∼ 135 cm−1 is assigned to the stretching vibration of lead-oxygen bonds. The shoulder band of the silicon-oxygen stretching mode at ∼900 cm−1 shows a weak coupling of those bonds to the Pb2+ modifier. The vibration strength of those bands shows that the number of the Pb2+ modifier increases first up approximately to 50 Mol% with the increase of PbO content and then decreases ra…

Bicyclo[2.2.2]octane-1,4-dicarboxylic acid: towards transparent metal–organic frameworks

2017

The preparation of transparent porous materials can offer a different access towards the study of molecules under solid confined space. Metal-organic frameworks represent a unique opportunity due to their tunable pore size, however aromatic linkers present strong absorption and reduce the transparency. Herein, we report the first example of a MOF with bicyclic organic dicarboxylic linkers and its use as a solid solvent.

Influence of hydrocolloid nature on the structure and functional properties of emulsified edible films

2009

Abstract To investigate the influence of polymer behaviors on the structure and the functional properties of emulsified films, agar (AG) and cassava starch (CAS) were used as hydrocolloid continuous phases in which hydrogenated vegetable oil (VGB81) was dispersed. Different ratios of hydrophilic/hydrophobic materials (HB/HL) were also used in film formulations to study the evolution of film-emulsion structure. Microscopically observed, VGB–CAS emulsified films exhibit a similar bilayer structure. However, there was just a migration and an aggregation of lipid particles. There was no coalescence which could form a continuous “lipid layer” necessary for an effective barrier. Moreover, they co…

Critical adsorption of a single macromolecule in polymer brushes.

2014

The adsorption of long flexible macromolecules by polymer brush-coated surfaces is studied by molecular dynamics simulations and by calculations using density functional and self-consistent field theories. The case of repulsive interactions between the substrate surface and the monomers of both the brush polymers and the extra chains that can get absorbed into the brush is considered. Under good solvent conditions, critical absorption can occur, if the interaction between the monomers of the brush polymers and the extra chain is (weakly) attractive. It is shown that it is possible to map out the details of the critical absorption transition, if the chain length and/or the grafting density o…

Infrared spectroscopic study of a phenyl benzoate side group—methacrylate main chain polymeric liquid crystal

1994

Abstract The temperature dependence of the infrared dichroism of a side chain polymeric liquid crystal was investigated for two homogeneously oriented samples, one aligned with a PVA coating and the other aligned by a magnetic field. From the apparent order parameters, it was found that the rotation of the mesogenic side group was restricted. Not only the rigid part of the side group, but also the alkyl chains were found to be partly ordered. Realignment of the side groups was observed in the case of the magnetically aligned sample at the smectic-nematic transition temperature. Unlike the other absorption bands, the C˭O bond vibration band shifted to higher wavenumbers with increasing tempe…

Polymerization of mono- and multilayer forming diacetylenes

1977

Heptadeca-2,4-diine-1-ol and Heptadeca-2,4-diine-1-acid were synthesized and their polymerization behaviour in the solid state was investigated. Both compounds polymerize thermally below the melting point and photochemically under the action of uv-light to form polymers via 1,4-addition to the conjugated triple bonds with a backbone of conjugated double-and triple-bonds. The photoresponse spectra resemble the absorption spectra exhibiting maxima of photoreactivity in the absorption band of the conjugated triple bonds of the monomers.

Photoreactive Langmuir–Blodgett–Kuhn multilayer assemblies from functionalized liquid-crystalline side chain polymers, I. Homopolymers containing azo…

1991

Stable monomolecular layers of a liquid-crystalline homopolymer bearing azobenzene chromophores in the mesogenic side groups could be prepared at the water–air interface by slow compression at room temperature. From the area per monomer unit of A0≈0.25 nm2 a structural model with tightly packed azobenzene groups oriented nearly parallel to the surface normal was deduced. After transfer to a solid support in a Y-type mode the obtained Langmuir–Blodgett–Kuhn (LBK) multilayer assemblies of varying thicknesses (from a double layer to a thick film of d = 238 nm, capable of guiding optical modes) were prepared and analyzed by X-ray reflection and optical evanescent wave techniques. A monolayer th…

Novel benzofulvenes-based polymers: Characterization and employment in flexible electrochromic devices

2014

Benzofulvenes-based monomers have been synthesized for the first time and have been polymerized by means of electrochemical methods onto different electrodic materials. Morphological investigation has been performed by using SEM; electrical and optical properties have been studied by means of both cyclic voltammetry, optical absorption and spectroelectrochemical techniques. Finally, solid state electrochromic devices have been fabricated. They have displayed high optical contrast.
