Initial experience with the Sophono Alpha 1 osseointegrated implant.

2013

In the last several years, bone anchored hearing aids have proven to be useful in treating conductive and mixed unilateral or bilateral hearing loss, as well as for sensorineural unilateral hearing loss. The Sophono Alpha 1 model has the advantage of not requiring an abutment, with it being coupled by magnetism instead. We report the cases of 3 infants with congenital malformations of external and middle ear. Audiometry showed conductive hearing loss. All 3 patients were implanted with Alpha 1 model (Sophono). Patients evolved satisfactorily. After 30 days we applied the processor and the control audiometry showed a marked improvement of hearing thresholds, although without a complete closu…

2019

Background The aim of the present prospective clinical study is to compare the stability of the implant-bone interface by the ISQ quotient and marginal bone loss (MBL) rate during one year of follow-up in four system implants with the same surface and different design. Material and Methods Prospective randomized clinical trial of 21 patients in which four implant systems with the same surface and different design were placed. Patients were treated by the same operator following a similar surgical protocol with submerged technique. The second surgery to perform the prosthesis was performed at 3 months. Zirconia Removable Telescopic Dentures Retained on Teeth or Implants for Maxilla Rehabilitation. Three-Year Observation of Three Cases

2010

Abstract This report addresses maxillary restoration with removable telescopic crown-retained palatal free dentures. One patient with 7 natural teeth (PERIO), a second patient with 6 dental implants (IMPL), and a third patient with 2 natural teeth and 4 dental implants (IMPL-PERIO) were treated. Zirconia copings for natural teeth and individual zirconia implant abutments were fabricated in CAD/CAM and used as primary crowns. Electroformed gold copings were used as secondary telescopes. All maxilla supraconstructions were fabricated with zirconia and CAD/CAM. Patients were monitored during a 3-year period; all teeth and implants survived, and no biological or mechanical complications occurre…

A comparison of three different attachment systems for mandibular two-implant overdentures: one-year report.

2009

Background: There is a lack of clinical studies on the self-aligning attachment system (Locator®; Zest Anchors, Inc. homepage, Escondido, CA, USA) for two-implant-retained overdentures in the edentulous mandible. Therefore, a comparison of the Locator with two traditional designs (a rotational gold matrix and a rubber O-ring type) in clinical 1-year use was conducted. MaterialsandMethods: From 2003 to 2007, 60 patients received two Osseotite® TG Standard implants (BIOMET 3i Implant Innovations, Palm Beach Gardens, FL, USA) in the intraforaminal area of the edentulous mandible. The implants were left unloaded for 3.5 months, randomized to three different attachment systems, and loaded throug…

Mechanical behavior of provisional implant prosthetic abutments

2014

Introduction: Implant-supported prostheses have to overcome a major difficulty presented by the morphology and esthetics of peri-implant tissues in the anterior sector. Diverse therapeutic techniques are used for managing the mucosa adjacent to the implant and the most noteworthy is immediate/deferred fixed provisionalization. Objectives: In vitro testing of strength and deformation of implant prosthetic abutments made from different materials (Titanium/PEEK/methacrylate). Material and Methods: Forty Sweden&Martina® implant prosthetic abutments (n=40) were divided into five groups: Group MP: methacrylate provisional abutments with machined titanium base; Group PP: Poly ether ether ketone (P…

Electromechanical Impedance Method to Assess the Stability of Dental Implants

2017

In this paper we illustrate the application of the electromechanical impedance (EMI) technique, popular in structural health monitoring, to assess the stability of dental implants. The technique consists of bonding a piezoelectric transducer to the element to be monitored. When subjected to an electric field, the transducer induces low to high frequency structural excitations which, in turn, affect the transducer's electrical admittance. As the structural vibrations depend on the mechanical impedance of the host structure (in this case the implant secured to the jaw), the measurement of the PZT's admittance can infer the progress of the osseointegration process. In the study presented in th…

Mechanical behavior of single-layer ceramized zirconia abutments for dental implant prosthetic rehabilitation

2013

Objectives: This study was undertaken to characterize the mechanical response of bare (as-received) and single-layer ceramized zirconia abutments with both internal and external connections that have been developed to enhanced aesthetic restorations. Material and Methods: Sixteen zirconia implant abutments (ZiReal Post®, Biomet 3i, USA) with internal and external connections have been analyzed. Half of the specimens were coated with a 0.5mm-thick layer of a low-fusing fluroapatite ceramic. Mechanical tests were carried out under static (constant cross-head speed of 1mm/min until fracture) and dynamic (between 100 and 400N at a frequency of 1Hz) loading conditions. The failure location was i…

Development and viability of biofilms grown on experimental abutments mimicking dental implants: an in vivo model

2019

Background To determine whether an experimental abutment mimicking the macro- and microstructure of a dental implant is a suitable method for recovering biofilm, and to describe the features of biofilms formed around such abutments on healthy implants. Material and Methods Experimental abutments were used in 15 patients without peri-implant diseases. After 14 days’ absence of dental hygiene in this area, the abutments were retrieved and analyzed through confocal laser scanning microscopy and scanning electron microscopy. The biofilm formation on the surface of the first 5 abutments was determined by a fluorescence-staining method using SYTO9 nucleic acid stain. In order to study the biofilm…

Vertical misfit of laser-sintered and vacuum-cast implant-supported crown copings luted with definitive and temporary luting agents

2012

Objectives. This study aimed to evaluate the vertical discrepancy of implant-supported crown structures constructed with vacuum-casting and Direct Metal Laser Sintering (DMLS) technologies, and luted with different cement types. Study Design. Crown copings were fabricated using: (1) direct metal laser sintered Co-Cr (LS); (2) vacuum-cast Co-Cr (CC); and (3) vacuum-cast Ti (CT). Frameworks were luted onto machined implant abutments under constant seating pressure. Each alloy group was randomly divided into 5 subgroups (n = 10 each) according to the cement system utilized: Subgroup 1 (KC) used resin-modified glass-ionomer Ketac Cem Plus; Subgroup 2 (PF) used Panavia F 2.0 dual-cure resin ceme…

On the use of EMI for the assessment of dental implant stability

2014

The achievement and the maintenance of dental implant stability are prerequisites for the long-term success of the osseointegration process. Since implant stability occurs at different stages, it is clinically required to monitor an implant over time, i.e. between the surgery and the placement of the artificial tooth. In this framework, non-invasive tests able to assess the degree of osseointegration are necessary. In this paper, the electromechanical impedance (EMI) method is proposed to monitor the stability of dental implants. A 3D finite element model of a piezoceramic transducer (PZT) bonded to a dental implant placed into the bone was created, considering the presence of a bone- impla…
