Evaluation of the Bioaccessibility of Antioxidant Bioactive Compounds and Minerals of Four Genotypes of Brassicaceae Microgreens
2019
Microgreens constitute an emerging class of fresh, healthy foods due to their nutritional composition. In this study the content of minerals and antioxidant bioactive compounds, and for the first time bioaccessibility, were evaluated in broccoli (Brassica oleracea L. var. italica Plenck), green curly kale (Brassica oleracea var. sabellica L.), red mustard (Brassica juncea (L.) Czern.) and radish (Raphanus sativus L.) hydroponic microgreens. Macro- (K, Ca, Mg) and oligo-elements (Fe, Zn), ascorbic acid, total soluble polyphenols, total carotenoids, total anthocyanins, total isothiocyanates and total antioxidant capacity (Trolox Equivalent Antioxidant Capacity and Oxygen Radical Absorbance Ca…
Effect of Adding Resistant Maltodextrin to Pasteurized Orange Juice on Bioactive Compounds and Their Bioaccessibility
2021
Resistant maltodextrin (RMD) is a water-soluble and fermentable functional fiber. RMD is a satiating prebiotic, reducer of glucose and triglycerides in the blood, and promoter of good gut health, and its addition to food is increasingly frequent. Therefore, it is necessary to study its potential effects on intrinsic bioactive compounds of food and their bioaccessibility. The aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of adding RMD on the bioactive compounds of pasteurized orange juice with and without pulp, and the bioaccessibility of such compounds. RMD was added at different concentrations: 0 (control sample), 2.5%, 5%, and 7.5%. Ascorbic acid (AA) and vitamin C were analyzed using HPLC…
Measuring change in health care equity using small area administrative data – evidence from the English NHS 2001-8
2011
This study developed a method for measuring change in socio-economic equity in health care utilisation using small area level administrative data. Our method provides more detailed information on utilisation than survey data but only examines socio-economic differences between neighbourhoods rather than individuals. The context was the English NHS from 2001 to 2008, a period of accelerated expenditure growth and pro-competition reform. Hospital records for all adults receiving non-emergency hospital care in the English NHS from 2001 to 2008 were aggregated to 32,482 English small areas with mean population about 1,500 and combined with other small area administrative data. Regression models…
Migrants' and refugees' health status and healthcare in Europe: A scoping literature review
2020
Abstract Background There is increasing attention paid to the arrival of migrants from outwith the EU region to the European countries. Healthcare that is universally and equably accessible needs to be provided for these migrants throughout the range of national contexts and in response to complex and evolving individual needs. It is important to look at the evidence available on provision and access to healthcare for migrants to identify barriers to accessing healthcare and better plan necessary changes. Methods This review scoped 77 papers from nine European countries (Austria, Cyprus, France, Germany, Greece, Italy, Malta, Spain, and Sweden) in English and in country-specific languages i…
The Content Web-Accessibility of Information and Technology Support in a Complex System of Educational and Social Inclusion
2018
Support for the socialization of people with special needs is an urgent task in the European space. The study of the system of educational and social inclusion requires an interdisciplinary approach, and a large number of components, their hierarchy, and other features states that the system of inclusion is complex, and therefore requires appropriate means of its modeling - complex networks, graphs, appropriate modeling languages, etc. An important stage in the study of complex systems is the evaluation of their information and technology component in terms of the web accessibility. The use of the recommendations outlined in the WCAG 2.0 while developing information technologies as a compon…
Mapping the Distortions in Time and Space: The French Railway Network 1830–1930
2013
International audience; Accessibility is frequently used in transportation planning to measure the efficiency of new infrastructure in terms of travel time and population served. In this article, the authors apply accessibility concepts based on the geo-historical angle. The aim of this study is to investigate the relationships between population dynamics and the railway expansion from 1830 to 1930. Their approach considers a local scale composed of some 36,000 French communes for the demographic data and more than 28,000 kilometers for the railway network. The methodological framework of this database is based on historical geographic information systems completed by anamorphosis analysis.…
iHERITAGE Project : AR/VR for the enhancement and accessibility of the norman architecture of the Unesco site of Palermo
2023
In the context of conservation and dissemination of cultural heritage, noninvasive technologies for the generation of digital models have produced exponential growth in the quality of the data acquired. The digital contents processed allow the use of architectural contexts that no longer exist or sites that are di cult to access, thanks to the visualisation of high-resolution and immersive products. However, the process from acquisition to visualisation requires optimisation strategies and specific operational choices, depending on the design goals. The study describes some results of a broader research within the iHERITAGE Project funded by the ENI CBC MED Program 2014-2020, critically des…
Bioaccessibility of tocopherols, carotenoids, and ascorbic acid from milk- and soy-based fruit beverages: Influence of food matrix and processing
2012
A study was made of the effect of high-pressure processing (HPP) and thermal treatment (TT) on plant bioactive compounds (tocopherols, carotenoids, and ascorbic acid) in 12 fruit juice-milk beverages and of how the food matrix [whole milk (JW), skimmed milk (JS), and soy milk (JSy)] modulates their bioaccessibility (%). HPP (400 MPa/40 °C/5 min) produced a significant decrease in carotenoid and ascorbic acid bioaccessibility in all three beverages and maintained the bioaccessibility of tocopherols in JW and JS while decreasing it in JSy. TT (90 °C/30 s) produced a significant decrease in tocopherol and carotenoid bioaccessibility in all three beverages and increased the bioaccessibility of …
Web accessibility for individuals with cognitive deficits
2007
Tim Berners-Lee claimed in 2001 that “the power of the Web is in its universality. Access by everyone regardless of disability is an essential aspect”. A considerable amount of work has been done to make the web accessible to those with sensory or motor disability, with an increasing number of government and enterprise intranet webs being “accessible”, and also with some consortiums and groups seriously approaching this commitment. Some authors, such as Harrysson, have already highlighted the need for a cognitively accessible web. However, in spite of good intentions, there has been little work to date that has tackled this task. At least until now, the existing WAI and NI4 recommendations …
Modulation of folic acid bioaccessibility by encapsulation in pH-responsive gated mesoporous silica particles
2015
[EN] A study on the controlled release of folic acid (FA) from pH-responsive gated mesoporous silica particles (MSP) is reported. The MCM-41 support was synthesized using tetraethyl orthosilicate (TEOS) as hydrolytic inorganic precursor and the surfactant hexadecyltrimethylammonium bromide (CTAB) as porogen species. Calcination of the mesostructured phase resulted in the starting solid. This solid was loaded with FA to obtain the initial support S0. Moreover, this FA-loaded material was further functionalized with 3-[2-(2-aminoethylamino)ethylamino]propyltrimethoxysilane (N3) in order to obtain the gated polyamine-functionalised material S1. Solids S0 and S1 were characterized using standar…
