Organic solvent desorption from two tegafur polymorphs.

Desorption behavior of 8 different solvents from α and β tegafur (5-fluoro-1-(tetrahydro-2-furyl)uracil) has been studied in this work. Solvent desorption from samples stored at 95% and 50% relative solvent vapor pressure was studied in isothermal conditions at 30 °C. The results of this study demonstrated that: solvent desorption rate did not differ significantly for both phases; solvent desorption in all cases occurred faster from samples with the largest particle size; and solvent desorption in most cases occurred in two steps. A new dual inhibitor of arachidonate metabolism isolated from Helichrysum italicum.

Six acetophenones (1-6) and one gamma-pyrone (7), previously isolated from Helichrysum italicum, were tested for their ability to inhibit enzymatic and non-enzymatic lipid peroxidation, the stable 1,1-diphenyl-2-pycryl-hydrazyl free radical, superoxide scavenging and arachidonic acid metabolism. In addition, they were studied in different experimental models such as the chronic inflammation induced by 12-O-tetradecanoylphorbol 13-acetate (TPA), the phospholipase A(2)-induced mouse paw oedema test, the carrageenan-induced mouse paw oedema test, and the writhing induced by acetic acid in the mouse. Oxygenated Cembrene Diterpenes from Sarcophyton convolutum: Cytotoxic Sarcoconvolutum A–E

The soft coral genus Sarcophyton contains the enzymatic machinery to synthesize a multitude of cembrene-type diterpenes. Herein, highly oxygenated cembrenoids, sarcoconvolutum A–E (1–5) were purified and characterized from an ethyl acetate extract of the red sea soft coral, Sarcophyton convolutum. Compounds were assemblies according to spectroscopic methods including FTIR, 1D- and 2D-NMR as well as HRMS. Metabolite cytotoxicity was tested against lung adenocarcinoma, cervical cancer, and oral-cavity carcinoma (A549, HeLa and HSC-2, respectively). The most cytotoxic compound, (4) was observed to be active against cell lines A549 and HSC-2 with IC50 values of 49.70 and 53.17 μM, respectively.

Abstract The knowledge of the behaviour of flavour compounds in complex multiphase systems with regard to their structure is of great importance in flavour perception of foods. Physicochemical Interactions Between Aroma Compounds and Milk Proteins: Effect of Water and Protein Modification

The physicochemical interactions between aroma compounds and sodium caseinate were studied by complementary techniques involving the protein in aqueous solution at 25 or 75 g/L (exponential dilution and equilibrium dialysis) or in a solid state (sorption and infrared spectroscopy). No retention of acetone, ethyl acetate, and 2-propanol in aqueous solutions was found by exponential dilution and equilibrium dialysis. Diacetyl and benzaldehyde interacted with sodium caseinate through strong and weak bonds, as found by equilibrium dialysis. Micellar structures of amphiphilic poly(1,2-butadiene)-block-poly(ethylene oxide) diblock copolymers have been crosslinked in aqueous solution by γ-irradiation. By transmission electron microscopy (TEM) of neganively stained specimen it is shown that the precominant structures present are sopolymer sesicles (which appear to be double latered. Effects of the nature and concentration of substrates in aqueous solutions on the solubility of aroma compounds

The solubility of nine aroma compounds (acetone, 2-butanone, 2-hexanone, 2-octanone, ethyl acetate, ethyl butanoate, ethyl hexanoate, n-hexanal, and n-hexanol) in both water and various aqueous solutions was measured at 25 °C using the mutual solubility method. The aqueous solutions consisted of sucrose, glucose, sorbitol, glycerol, polyethylene glycol 200, or maltodextrins at different concentrations. Aroma solubility in water decreased with increased hydrophobicity. Antibacterial and antifungal activities of Otanthus maritimus (L.) Hoffmanns.Link essential oil from Sicily.

The chemical composition of the essential oil obtained from the flowers of Otanthus maritimus L., a perennial plant growing wild in maritime sands in the Mediterranean region, was investigated by GC and GC-MS analyses. Totally 66 were identified. The oil was dominated by the high content of monoterpene compounds, especially oxygenated monoterpenes which accounted for 73.1%. The most abundant components were yomogi alcohol (20.8%), camphor (15.8%), artemisyl acetate (15.3%) and artemisia alcohol (13.7%).
