Polymer Synthesis in Supercritical Carbon Dioxide

2003

It is current opinion of most of the people involved in supercritical fluids (SCFs) technology that as the end of the twentieth century has been devoted to enlarge exploitation of compressed gases in separation processes the beginning of the twenty-first will be mainly aimed to improve their utilisation as solvents for reactions.

effects of early combined pheromone and food exposure on the behavioral development of adult drosophila melanogaster

2023

In Drosophila melanogaster, pheromonal communication is mainly mediated through sex-specific cuticular hydrocarbons (and derived compounds) and the male lipidic pheromone 11 - cis - Vaccényl Acétate (cVA). When deposited together on the feeding substrate they attract conspecifics males and females, promoting mating and collective behaviors. Initially described as stereotyped, recent findings showed that adult response to pheromones could be plastic and depend on the juvenile experience of an individual (i.e. imprinting). In this context, we studied cVA imprinting through its aggregative effect in individuals whose imprinting has been manipulated. The first goal, behavioral, was to study long…

Nachweis von fetalem Hmoglobin in Blutspuren mit Hilfe der Celluloseacetatfolien- (CAF) -Elektrophorese

1977

Simultaneous determination of different classes of antibiotics in fish and livestock by CE-MS

2007

A specific CE-MS method was developed for the simultaneous determination of 12 antibacterial residues (four sulfonamides: sulfamethazine, sulfathiazole, sulfadiazine, and sulfachlorpyridazine; four beta-lactams: amoxicillin, ampicillin, oxacillin, and penicillin V, and four quinolones: danofloxacin, enrofloxacin, ofloxacin, and flumequine) in fish and livestock. Separation conditions, sheath liquid composition and electrospray parameters were optimized to obtain adequate CE separation and a high sensitivity. CE employed a 75 cm long fused-silica capillary (50 cm thermostated plus 25 cm at room temperature) 75 microm id and a 60 mM ammonium acetate separation buffer at pH 8 with 10% of metha…

Studies on heat shock proteins in sea urchin development

1999

Work on stress proteins in sea urchin embryos carried out over the last 20 years is reviewed and the following major results are described. Entire sea urchin embryos, if subjected to a rise in temperature at any postblastular stage undergo a wave of heat shock protein (hsp) synthesis and survive. If subjected to the same rise between fertilization and blastula formation, they are not yet able to synthesize hsp and die. Four clones coding for the major hsp, hsp70, have been isolated and sequenced; evidence for the existence of a heat shock factor has been provided, and a mechanism for the developmental regulation of hsp synthesis discussed. Intra- embryonic and intracellular hsp location has…

Licofelone, a novel 5-LOX/COX-inhibitor, attenuates leukocyte rolling and adhesion on endothelium under flow

2005

The main mechanism of action of non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) is the inhibition of cycloxygenases COX-1 and COX-2. During recent years, combined 5-LOX/COX-inhibition, interfering with the biosynthesis of both prostaglandins and leukotrienes (LTs), has emerged as a possibility to avoid side effects related to COX-inhibition. The aim of the present study was to investigate if there is a contribution of mechanisms other than the reduction of inflammatory prostaglandins and leukotrienes to the anti-inflammatory effect of the LOX/COX inhibitor licofelone. In a flow chamber assay, licofelone (10-30 microM) dose-dependently decreased both the rolling and adhesion of leukocytes on …

PURIFICATION OF HARDWOOD-DERIVED AUTOHYDROLYSATES

2012

Carbohydrate-containing hydrolysates (1.1 to 14.9% of wood dry matter) obtained from autohydrolysis (at 130 to 150°C for 30 to 120 minutes) of birch (Betula pendula) chips prior to pulping were purified with respect to non-carbohydrate materials, without carbohydrate losses, either by ethyl acetate extraction or XAD-4 resin treatment. In the former case, about 50% of lignin and practically all the furanoic compounds (2-furaldehyde and 5-(hydroxymethyl)furfural) could be removed, whereas in the latter case, the corresponding amounts were about 30% and 50 to 90%, respectively. A partial recovery of various unsaturated impurities is of importance, because they may act as inhibitors when bioche…

Development and optimization of gas chromatography coupled to high resolution mass spectrometry based method for the sensitive determination of Dechl…

2017

An analytical method has been developed for the trace determination of 10 dechlorane-related compounds (DRCs) in food products by gas chromatography - high resolution mass spectrometry (GC-HRMS). The highest sensitivity of this instrumental analysis method was achieved by selection of the GC column type, optimization of the heated zones within the instrument, and adjusting the electron impact energy. The efficiency of solid phase extraction as clean-up procedure was also optimized. Two different types of cartridges - neutral silica gel and Florisil®, as well as seven organic solvents or their mixtures - n-hexane, cyclohexane, acetone, toluene, n-hexane/ethyl acetate, n-hexane/acetone, and n…

Performance evaluation of a biotrickling filter treating a mixture of oxygenated VOCs during intermittent loading

2008

Laboratory scale-studies on the biodegradation of a 1:1:1 weight mixture of three oxygenated volatile organic compounds (VOCs), ethanol, ethyl acetate, and methyl-ethyl ketone (MEK) in a biotrickling filter (BTF) were carried out using two identically sized columns, filled with different polypropylene rings. The performance of the BTFs was examined for a period of 10 months applying several operational strategies. Similar performance was obtained for both supports. Intermittent flow rate of trickling liquid was shown beneficial to improve the removal efficiency (RE). Continuous feeding of VOC resulted in an excessive accumulation of biomass so high pressure drop was developed in less than 2…
