Fractionation of cellulose acetate for the investigation of molecular weight influences on the morphology of membranes
2003
Abstract Cellulose acetate (CA) with an apparent weight average molar mass, M w ∗ , of 150 kg/mol was fractionated with respect to M by means of the mixed solvent methyl acetate (MeAc)/2-propanol (2-POH) applying a new method that uses spinning nozzles to promote the rapid attainment of phase equilibria. Two of the fractions obtained in this manner were employed to prepare membranes from solutions in methyl acetate with 2-propanol as coagulating agent. Electron micrographs demonstrate that the molar mass of CA influences the morphology of the membranes markedly under otherwise identical conditions. For M w ∗ =128 kg/mol, one obtains considerably denser structures than for M w ∗ =263 kg/mo…
Silver-Catalyzed C-C Bond Formation between Methane and Ethyl Diazoacetate in Supercritical CO2
2011
Even in the context of hydrocarbons’ general resistance to selective functionalization, methane’s volatility and strong bonds pose a particular challenge. We report here that silver complexes bearing perfluorinated indazolylborate ligands catalyze the reaction of methane (CH4) with ethyl diazoacetate (N2CHCO2Et) to yield ethyl propionate (CH3CH2CO2Et). The use of supercritical carbon dioxide (scCO2) as the solvent is key to the reaction’s success. Although the catalyst is only sparingly soluble in CH4/CO2 mixtures, optimized conditions presently result in a 19% yield of ethyl propionate (based on starting quantity of the diazoester) at 40°C over 14 hours.
Signal transduction pathways of membrane expression of proteinase 3 (PR‐3) in human endothelial cells
1997
At present, the exact mechanism of the pathogenic effect of anti-PR-3 antibodies remains unknown. Interaction of anti-neutrophil cytoplasmic antibodies (ANCAs) with human umbilical vein endothelial cells (HUVECs) may play a key role. Recently we were able to show that ANCAs recognize their target antigen, PR-3, translocated into the membrane of HUVECs. The objective of this study was to investigate regulation, i.e. signal transduction pathways, of PR-3 expression in endothelial cells. HUVECs were isolated according to the method of Jaffe et al. and cultured under standard conditions. A cyto-enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) with unfixed cells was performed. Membrane-expressed PR-3 w…
A Two-Year Bio-Agronomic and Chemotaxonomic Evaluation of Wild Sicilian Myrtle (Myrtus communis L.) Berries and Leaves.
2019
A collection of nine Myrtus communis samples from different localities of Sicily was evaluated. Morphological traits and production characteristics have been chosen as parameters to arrange the samples into homogeneous groups and to identify the best biotypes for possible future agro-industrial exploitation. The plant material has been subjected to taxonomic characterization from biometric and phytochemical perspectives. Myrtle berries and leaves have been analyzed for their content in metabolites, applying a cascade extraction protocol for M. communis leaves and a single hydroalcoholic extraction for berries, whereas hydrodistillation procedures have been applied to obtain the essential oi…

Mechanism of nanocapsules formation by the emulsion-diffusion process.
2007
International audience; A detailed investigation into the mechanisms of nanocapsule formation by means of the two stages “emulsion–diffusion” process is reported. Such widely used process is still poorly understood. An emulsion of oil, polymer and ethyl acetate is fabricated as a first step; dilution with pure water allows ethyl acetate to diffuse out from the droplets, leaving a suspension of nanocapsules at the end. It has been shown that the size of nanocapsules was related to the chemical composition of the organic phase and the size of primary emulsion through a simple geometrical relationship. As a consequence, most of the properties of the nanocapsules were decided at the emulsificat…
EVA-montmorillonite nanocomposites: effect of processing condition
2004
The aim of this study is to examine the effect of the compounding apparatus and of processing conditions on the properties of an organoclay-poly[ethylene-co-(vinyl acetate)] (EVA) nanocomposite. The filled materials were prepared using either a discontinuous batch mixer, a single screw extruder, a counter rotating intermeshing twin-screw compounder or a corotating intermeshing twin-screw extruder. The characterization of the obtained nanocomposites was performed by XRD, thermogravimetry, mechanical and rheological measurements. The study has shown the possibility of producing nanocomposites based on EVA and a commercial organoclay (Cloisite 15A) by several mixing equipments. In fact all the…
Design of Bimodal Ligands of Neurotensin Receptor 1 for Positron Emission Tomography Imaging and Fluorescence-Guided Surgery of Pancreatic Cancer
2020
International audience; Neurotensin receptor 1 (NTSR1) is overexpressed in most human pancreatic ductal adenocarcinomas. It makes it an attractive target for the development of pancreatic cancer imaging agents. In this study, we sought to develop a bimodal PET-fluorescent imaging agent capable of specifically targeting these receptors. Starting from the structure of a known NTSR1 agonist, a series of tracers was synthesized, radiometalated with gallium-68 and evaluated in vitro and in vivo, in mice bearing an AsPC-1 xenograft. PET imaging allowed us to identify the compound [ 68 Ga]Ga-NODAGA-Lys(Cy5**)-AEEAc-[Me-Arg 8 , Tle 12 ]-NT(7-13) as the one with the most promising biodistribution pr…
