An Aqueous Extract of Ilex paraguariensis Reduces Carrageenan-Induced Edema and Inhibits the Expression of Cyclooxygenase-2 and Inducible Nitric Oxid…

2014

Mate (Ilex paraguariensis) is a highly popular herbal beverage in South America due to its high content of caffeine. Its hypolipidemic and antioxidant properties are of increasing interest in the treatment of cardiovascular disorders and for weight control. In the present study, we show for the first time both the local and systemic anti-inflammatory effects of an aqueous extract of mate in three classic in vivo models, namely acute and chronic 12-O-tetradecanoylphorbol 13-acetate-induced mouse ear edema and acute carrageenan-induced mouse paw edema. Caffeine, rutin, chlorogenic acid, 3,5-dicafeoyl quinic acid, and 4,5-dicafeoyl quinic acid, accompanied by a complex mixture of other simple …

A catalytic highly enantioselective direct synthesis of 2-bromo-2-nitroalkan-1-ols through a Henry reaction.

2008

Highly enantiomerically enriched 2-bromo-2-nitroalkan-1-ols are prepared by direct condensation of aliphatic and aromatic aldehydes with bromonitromethane in the presence of a catalytic amount of copper(II) acetate and a C1-symmetric camphorderived amino pyridine ligand. Stability of parenteral nutrition admixtures containing organic phosphates

1995

The use of organic phosphates to avoid calcium phosphate precipitation in parenteral nutrition mixtures has been proposed. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the stability of total parenteral nutrition admixtures containing glucose-1-phosphate or glycerol phosphate as the phosphate source over 3 days. Three parenteral nutrition admixtures, each containing glucose-1-phosphate (30.0 mmol), glycerol phosphate (31.4 mmol) or inorganic phosphate (30.0 mmol), and their corresponding aqueous phases were prepared in 3-L ethylene vinyl acetate plastic bags and infusion bottles, and stored at 5 +/- 1 degrees C or 22 +/- 3 degrees C without light protection. Physical stability analysis and samp…

Retention of aroma compounds: an interlaboratory study on the effect of the composition of food matrices on thermodynamic parameters in comparison wi…

2010

BACKGROUND: Partition coefficients give an indication of the retention of aroma compounds by the food matrix. Data in the literature are obtained by various methods, under various conditions and expressed in various units, and it is thus difficult to compare the results. The aim of the present study was first to obtain gas/water and gas/matrix partition coefficients of selected aroma compounds, at different temperatures, in order to calculate thermodynamic parameters and second to compare the retention of these aroma compounds in different food matrices. RESULTS: Yogurts containing lipids and proteins induced a higher retention of aroma compounds than model gel matrices. The observed effect…

Determination of ochratoxin A in beer marketed in Spain by liquid chromatography with fluorescence detection using lead hydroxyacetate as a clean-up …

2005

Abstract A new sample treatment for liquid chromatographic analysis of ochratoxin A (OTA) in beer is proposed. Degassed beer is mixed with lead hydroxyacetate, which precipitates some bulk components but does not remove OTA. The precipitate is separated and the acidified liquid is extracted with chloroform. The solvent is evaporated and the residue is dissolved in mobile phase (acetonitrile–water, 40:60, v/v; acidified at pH 3.0 with phosphoric acid) and separated by liquid chromatography using fluorescence detection. The limit of detection was 0.005 ng/ml. The average recovery rate and the average RSD of recovery in the spiking level range 0.01–0.5 ng/ml were 95.5% and about 5%, respective…

New method for determination of ochratoxin A in beer using zinc acetate and solid-phase extraction silica cartridges

2006

Abstract A new method for the determination of ochratoxin A (OTA) in beer has been developed. The new method has been compared with a reference method currently accepted as AOAC official first action. The limits of detection and quantification of the proposed method were 0.0008 and 0.0025 ng/ml, respectively, while they were 0.0025 and 0.0075 ng/ml, respectively, in the AOAC method used as reference. The recovery levels in the 0.025–0.40 ng OTA/ml spiking range for the proposed and the reference methods were 80.6–87.6% and 78.2–83.8%, respectively. The relative standard deviations of recoveries were 2.6–7.5% for the proposed method and 0.7–6.1% for the reference method. Passing and Bablok r…

Interactions of odorants with olfactory receptors and receptor neurons match the perceptual dynamics observed for woody and fruity odorant mixtures

2012

The present study aimed to create a direct bridge between observations on peripheral and central responses to odorant mixtures and their components. Three experiments were performed using mixtures of fruity (isoamyl acetate; ISO) and woody (whiskey lactone; WL) odorants known to contribute to some of the major notes in Burgundy red wine. These experiments consisted of (i) calcium imaging of human embryonic kidney cells (HEK293T) transfected with olfactory receptors (ORs); (ii) single-unit electrophysiological recordings from olfactory receptor neurons (ORNs) and analyses of electro-olfactogram (EOG) responses in the rat nose in vivo; and (iii) psychophysical measurements of the perceived in…

PML as a potential predictive factor of oxaliplatin/fluoropyrimidine-based first line chemotherapy efficacy in colorectal cancer patients

2012

PML regulates a wide range of pathways involved in tumorigenesis, such as apoptosis, which is also one of the main mechanisms through which oxaliplatin and fluoropyrimidine exert their antineoplastic activity. The present study aims to investigate PML expression as a predictive factor of oxaliplatin/fluoropyrimidine therapy efficacy. Seventy-four metastatic colorectal cancer patients who received oxaliplatin/floropyrimidine-based first line therapy have been included in this retrospective study. PML expression was assessed by immunohistochemistry. PML down-regulation was detected in 39 (52.7%) patients (14 complete and 25 partial PML loss). RR was significantly lower (25.6%) in patients wit…

Update on capecitabine alone and in combination regimens in colorectal cancer patients

2010

Capecitabine is an orally administered fluoropyrimidine carbamate which has been developed as a prodrug of 5-FU with the goal to improve its tolerability and intratumoral drug concentration. The review aims to provide an evidence-based update of clinical trials investigating the clinical efficacy, adverse-event profile, dosage and administration of this drug, alone or in combination with conventional chemotherapeutics and/or new target-oriented drugs, in the management of colorectal cancer patients. © 2010 Elsevier Ltd.

Preliminary Results of Two Eortc Randomized Trials in Previously Untreated Patients with Advanced T3 — T4 Prostatic Cancer

1983

At the end of 1976 and the beginning of 1977 respectively, the EORTC Genito-Urinary Tract Cancer Cooperative Group started two randomized phase III protocols in previously untreated patients with advanced T3–4 prostatic cancer (1–3). The first trial, 30762, compared Stilboestrol and Estracyt, while the second, 30761, was a randomized comparison of Stilboestrol, Cyproterone Acetate and Medroxyprogesterone Acetate. Both trials have now been closed to patient entry and the principal endpoints of the studies analyzed. This paper will present the interim results which have emerged from these two studies.
