The infestation due to the olive fruit fly, Bactrocera oleae (Rossi), the key pest in most of world olive groves, has been monitored in six years, from 2004 to 2008 and in 2014, in eight coastal Sicilian olive groves consisting of ‘Cerasuola’ and ‘Nocellara del Belice’ cultivars. Infestation was recorded following the classical sampling method based on olive collection and dissection, in order to count live olive fruit fly instars (eggs, larvae and pupae) and exit holes. International audience; Understanding the microscopic origin of the acid base behavior of mineral surfaces in contact with water is still a challenging task, for both the experimental and the theoretical communities. Even for a relatively simple material, such as silica, the origin of the bimodal acidity behavior is still a debated topic. The pH of the Human Nail Plate

In this chapter, measurements of the nail plate pH are reported. Measurements were conducted in vivo in 37 volunteers with healthy finger- and toenails, using a skin pH meter. The pH of unwashed and washed fin- gernails and the big toenails was measured, and the influence of washing, anatomical site (fin- gers/toes), side (left/right), finger digit (digits 1–5), and gender were determined. The pH of the nail plate surface was around 5. There was no significant difference between the sides, i.e., the right or left hand/foot, among the ten fin- gernails and between the two great toenails. Abstract The present work reports the preparation of samples based on Millennium PC-500 TiO 2 loaded with different amounts of tungstophosphoric acid (up to 30% in weight) and their characterisation by means of different physicochemical techniques: powder X-ray diffraction, N 2 adsorption–desorption at −196 °C, transmission electron microscopy, UV–vis and FT-IR spectroscopies and thermogravimetric analyses. Major ions and trace elements composition of rainwater around the two industrial areas of Milazzo and Priolo Gargallo (Sicily - Italy)

This database shows the concentration of major ions and trace elements in rainwater from two polluted industrial areas of Sicily, Milazzo and Priolo Gargallo, collected from June 2018 to July 2019, through a network of 11 bulk collectors to sample bulk atmospheric deposition, for a total of 131 samples collected. Different sources, both natural and anthropogenic, for both major ions and trace elements have been recognised. This study also highlighted some critical issues with common methods of sampling and analysing atmospheric deposition. Abstract The preparation of Cc-monosubstituted closo and nido carborane derivatives, mono-, di and tetraiodinated is reported. Some of these mono-to poly-iodinated nido carboranes are studied in terms of the acidity of the open face bridging proton, their chemical shift position in the 1H NMR, and the lesser tendency to η5-coordination in parallel to a larger number of iodo groups.

SCD5-induced oleic acid production reduces melanoma malignancy by intracellular retention of SPARC and cathepsin B

A proper balance between saturated and unsaturated fatty acids (FAs) is required for maintaining cell homeostasis. The increased demand of FAs to assemble the plasma membranes of continuously dividing cancer cells might unbalance this ratio and critically affect tumour outgrowth. We unveiled the role of the stearoyl-CoA desaturase SCD5 in converting saturated FAs into mono-unsaturated FAs during melanoma progression. p-Nitrophenolate: A Probe for Determining Acid Strength in Ionic Liquids

In order to obtain an acidity scale in room-temperature ionic liquid solutions, the protonation equilibrium of sodium p-nitrophenolate in [bm(2)im][NTf(2)] and in [bmpyrr][NTf(2)], at 298 K, has been studied by means of spectrophotometric titration. Carboxylic acids differing in both structure and in water solution strength have been used. Data collected indicate that in the analyzed ionic liquid solutions carboxylic acids are less dissociated than in water solution. Furthermore, by virtue of a mutual interaction, the studied equilibrium seems to be affected by both the nature of the ionic liquids and the carboxylic acids.

The influence of backslopping on lactic acid bacteria diversity in tarhana fermentation

Tarhana is produced at batch systems in which the microbiota has changed accordingly to the microbial load from ingredients. In order to stabilize the microbiota, the effects of backslopping carried out under different temperature regimes (25 and 30 °C), pH (3.70 and 4.00) and inoculation rates (5, 10 and 15%) on lactic acid bacteria (LAB) diversity were determined in tarhana dough. LAB and Total Aerobic Mesophilic Bacteria (TAMB) numbers increased in all tarhana dough samples subjected to backslopping.
