0965-1748 (Print) Journal Article; The defensive secretion of the cockroach Eurycotis floridana contains three main components, (E)-2-hexenal, (E)-2-hexenol and (E)-2-hexenoic acid, which represented about 98% of the organic phase. The quantity of the aldehyde, alcohol, and acid present in the defensive secretion increased rapidly for 60 days from the imaginal moult. Following artificial discharge, the males were able to regenerate their initial volume of secretion over a 30 day period. In this study, linear poly(ethylene glycol) (PEG) and novel linear-hyperbranched, amphiphilic polyglycerol (hbPG) polymers with cholesterol (Ch) as a lipid anchor moiety were radiolabeled with fluorine-18 via copper-catalyzed click chemistry. In vivo investigations via positron emission tomography (PET) and ex vivo biodistribution in mice were conducted. Abstract γ-Amino-butyric acid (GABA) is cleaved from the synaptic cleft by uptake via specific transporters. Inhibition of such transporters increases the effectiveness of physiologically released GABA. Increased GABAergic neurotransmission has an impact on learning and memory. Therefore, effects of tiagabine, a GABA-transporter inhibitor, were investigated on spatial orientation in the Morris water-maze. Rats were given four training trials per day for 4 days and a probe trial without platform on the 5th day. Regulation of glutathione metabolism in Ehrlich ascites tumour cells.

Glutathione metabolism was studied in cancer cells during the growth of an Ehrlich ascites tumour. GSH, but not GSSG, content decreases when cell proliferation and the rate of protein synthesis in the tumour decrease. This change correlates with a decrease in the rate of GSH synthesis and an increase in glutathione peroxidase and glutathione S-transferase activities. Glutathione efflux from tumour cells seems to co-ordinate with the rate of GSH synthesis. Cysteine, and not methionine, promotes GSH synthesis in tumour cells. A preparation containing a standardized ginseng extract which has been shown to exert anti-hepatotoxic activity in vitro, combined with trace elements and multi-vitamins was compared to placebo in 24 elderly out-patients with toxin-induced (alcohol and drugs) chronic liver disease in order to evaluate its effect on liver function. Each patient was blindly treated either with the preparation containing ginseng extract or placebo for 12 weeks. The preparation containing ginseng extract significantly modified bromsulphthalein retention and blood zinc levels when compared to pre-treatment levels and to placebo.
